So I am trying to get extra performance out of some of my folding machines. This has me wondering if using xp64 would be faster then running win7 64?

I'm not sure that anyone has done any serious testing on this, certainly from my xp32 to win7 64 experience i have not seen any major difference. XP is easier to manage a multi GPU setup than 7, but for max performance the current king is linux

The performance jump to linux would have to be immense to leave windows and that would not work on all my machines. I like to keep my machines usable for windows so just trying to determine my best choice out of what I have.

If cost is a concern, used XP CDs with Keys on Ebay are hard to beat.

If you have a tech net or similar way of getting your fingers on Windows keys.... Win 7 all the way.

It is just stable, secure, and you wont have any issues with drivers for newer equipment.

xp64 isn't faster than Win7 64. Stick with Win 7.

I think any difference between winxp 64 and win7 is pretty minor - the major differences are with various services mucking around in the first half hour after boot, then things settle down. Not remotely worth the hassle of changing.

However, if you are thinking of more performance from SMP folding , the Linux 64 bit client is pretty dramatic. The two rigs I have tested with Muskys Ubuntu 10 / BFS have boosted PPD by 19% and 20%.

Quoted for Truth!

I will say this, if you are going to use wireless, then 7 is the only way to go as I gave up trying to get it working on XP 64. I also gave up because I couldn't get my wireless to work when I fiddled with Linux for a short while. The fact that Linux is totally foreign to me also likely helped with that.

I absolutely love Windows 7 as it works so well. How in the world do you have access to 50 copies?

xp64 was cool....3-4 years ago... the driver hell was a cost you beared...

I wouldn't count on new clients working with it though...

Linux is the smp/ bigadv king... gpu is a tad hard to get working though...

re: win7 vs. xp64. Go with Windows 7. XP64 doesn't have the same degree of NUMA support, which could be relevant at some point.

I have a microsoft 50pk plus I have half dozen normal ones.Xp64 have about a half dozen then I have a dozen or so regular xp's and about a dozen vistas.I use the 50 pack for building my machines and some family members. My boxes are mostly i7's with 2 to 3 video cards just trying to build a mini farm.

if you have access to win7 , thats the best option (as you said you have the access), newer, and personally my preference.....any difference you see will be negligible until you move to linux

Sounds like I'll just stick to win7. It would have been fun explaining to my wife why I want her new machine to be back to xp64 and not 7. Her current rig is vista and she just needs more ram then her current system lets her have, she's outgrown the 16gb so now she will have 24gb and switching her over to nvidia from ati wohoo more folding power.

What the heck is she doing on the box that 16gb isn't enough?!

I think that Kendraks' got a legitimate question there Newbs, and I'd certainly be interested in the answer as well. Graphic design? Ray Traced Animation? Don't leave us hanging here...

"it's that damn hansel he's so hot right now"...

Ok Zoolander. Go play with a school for ants or something.

Gains on AMD are an even greater sight to behold with Linux. Wowsers.

Hopefully sooner rather than later.

My wife is a professional photographer with heavy photoshop and large raw image editing. It's also strange with the i7's that they work so well we have been able to get away without using multi cpu machines. She has not had an amd machine since her dual dual core 3ghz opteron with 8gb and a iwill zmaxdp with 2gb as her backup machine.
