Can someone please tell me how the hell Microshaft expects you to defrag your HDD's now that they've released SP2?

I low leveled my system and installed SP2 defrag wouldn't work, I can open the defrag program but when I choose and HDD and click ANALYZE or DEFRAG nothing happens....

I then formated again fearing my system was screwed, got back into windows and ran defrag it worked, I then installed SP2 again and defrag no longer works....

Any clue?

OK I just tried to defrag from the command prompt here's the error message....

C:\Documents and settings\administrator\defrag c:
Copyright (c) 2001 Microsoft Corp. and Excutive Software International, INC.

WIndows can not connect to the Disk Deframentor Engine.

Works here

time for a service pack for SP2...way 2 go M$ :(

:EDIT: Just checked mine...guess what....it works!

right clicking the c drive, going to tools, and going to disk defragmenter seems to work fine for me

Defrag works fine here, clean install with slipstreamed SP2 into retail XP Pro :D

OldMX

Works here, I have installed it over regular SP1a, and SP2 RC2...

Where did you download SP2 from? MS? Or somewhere else? That might be your problem, same with your buddies.

I downloaded straight from Microsoft, I ran the uninstall from add/remove programs and defrag works again. I re-installed it and now it dosen't work anymore.

System Specs:

AMD Athlon64 3400+
K8VSE Deluxe ( Bios 1004 )
1024MB DDR PC3200
ATI Radeon 9800XT
SB Audigy 2 ZS
Seagate Barracuda 80GB 7200RPM SATA HDD
Seagate Barracuda 80GB 7200RPM SATA HDD

Works fine here. I do notice though you have a pair of drives, are they Raided (mirror or stipe?) If so, is it done with a hardware raid, or as a Dynamic Disk software Raid? Just trying to pin down the possibilities.

Pet Peeve: You very likely did not low level your drive, and if you did, then you have worse problems to worry about than defragging.

You formatted, yes?

People actually use the built in defragger?? Try for the hell of it to try some other software, like Diskeeper, etc. But on my test machine, the defrag worked before and after SP2.

diskeeper is teh best, but have you also noticed it uses the microsoft console program and some of the same defrag thing as the built-in windows defrager

Executive Software, the people who wrote Diskeeper, actually did most, if not all of the work for the built-in version of defrag for Windows XP. Microsoft just licensed it from them.

I just tested it on my mail machine, and it worked fine. And this machine has had almost every build of XP SP2 on it, and then upgraded to the next one. ;)

Yep...it's like Diskeeper Lite, built into XP.

heh...how did microsoft manage to make it perform so badly then? :D

It doesn't perform badly, it just doesn't do as thorough a job, nor does it have the scheduling features.

i guess i shouldnt talk cause thats the only defragmenting program ive ever used for windows :p

OK,

I've just low leveled by system again its been running for the last 4 hours. First install of Windows and it defrag is working just fine, I've installed the XPSP2 off of Microsoft and defrag no longer works.

1.) I am not running Raid.
2.) Defrag works with SP1a and with no SP installed.
3.) CHKDSK /F /R picks up no errors.
4.) I have run both Powermax and Seatools from Maxtor and Seagate no complications drives passed all tests.

One other thing I have noticed which is really really strange and you may want to check this out on yours. When I install SP2 my windows splash screen changes. Without an SP or with SP1 my windows splash screen reads Windows XP Professional. With SP2 it just says Windows XP and the professional is gone.

ive noticed this too, i like the cleaner look :D

are you using an intel or via board that needs chipset drivers?

We noticed that, i kinda like it, i wonder if this means MS is thinking about canceling home edition??

You're just formatting, right, not running a REAL low-level format of the drive?

defrag working fine on lan rig (test rig)......

low level formats are extremely unnecessary for normal windows installs...

Command-line and right-click both work ok here. SP2 over SP1. No problems that I have noticed yet.

Cheers.

No,No,No. Microsoft is adding more windows varieties not shrinking them.
Tablet PC
Media Center Pc
Windows XP Home
Windows XP Pro
etc... It's making it easier to just have one general branding screen for all of them, instead of having several different screens.

Ok where do I get disk keeper, and I ain't paying for anything so it better be freeware.
I'm somewhat amused.

Or what? What'll happen if it's not freeware?

And you are formatting the drive. Not low leveling.

I ain't paying for something that should work if the first place.

I am using powermaxes low level format utility, I've been using that for the past 8 to 9 years.

There is also another (better defragementer) then microsofts, its free so read all about it.
Here's a reaply taken from another forum.

--------------------------

Defrag defrag

Well you may underestimate it but defragging is important, mkay? It speeds up disk reads - the most major bottleneck in a modern PC it would appear. So defragging's good, mkay?

Okay now - seriously. Using the MS built-in defragger, especially on NTFS is the biggest mistake you can do. However comerisial defraggers are usually paid and the most you can get is a trial.

DIRMS - this is a small defrag utility, however VERY powerfull. It stands for Do It Right MicroSoft. It uses the same instructions for defragmenting, every other defragger uses, so don't be scared it can damage something. It can be downloaded completely free from DIRMS website.

Do not get scared - it is command line, but you shouldn't do much.
Usage is:
Code:

dirms <drive letter> [options]

Quick defrag of C:
Code:

dirms c -q

Quick defrag of C:, order files and move in the beggining of the drive.
Code:

dirms c -q move lcn

Ultimate defrag of C: that does AMAZING two-pass defrag job, but this WILL take a while
Code:

dirms c compact move lcn
