xp rebooting on shutdown command

i have an xp system that reboots when i issue the shutdown command.

this problem was not occurring prior to uninstalling symantec antivirus.

at this point i just need the quickest solution to prevent windows from rebooting. i.e., is there a registry setting that will completely disable windows ability to reboot?

any alternative suggestions (even if they are not quick) will be happily accepted too.
 
Maybe explorer is just fubar somehow.

Try typing this at command prompt "shutdown -s -f -t 0"

If it works as desired, make a desktop shortcut for the command.

check to see if the antivirus has any outstanding tasks to complete that it want a reboot for.

this is an interesting suggestion. i'll try it and let you know if it works.
 
Chances are high that your system is having a BSOD on shutdown, and your system is still set to auto reboot on BSODs. Right click my computer, properties, advanced, startup and recovery, settings, and uncheck automatically restart.

Then you can see the blue screen error and try to trace the problem from there. Or you could just perform a system restore to a point before the problem occured.

Most people end up using Norton Antivirus which is notorious for not actually uninstalling itself which creates a lot of problems. At least this has been true for older versions in the last few years or so. To truly uninstall it you have to get a utility off of Norton's site to actually uninstall the software and they like to bury it so it can be difficult to find at times.

You indicated you were running Symantec Antivirus which is a little different. However, it's been a while since I've uninstalled that so it might actually uninstall correctly without needing an extra utility. I'm sure someone else here knows the answer to that, though.

The BSOD problem with automatic reboots is also very probable and one of the easier and quickest things to check. I would probably start with that first and see if that is the problem.
