Question:
Right now I'm running the stock cooler on the system in my sig (used AS5 instead of the stock stuff). With a 100% folding load (what else would I be doing with my spare CPU cycles :) ) I get about 38-39C which is about 6C over my system temp. Idle temps are about 29C system/32C CPU. The highest my CPU gets up to with 1.55V is maybe 42-43C and that's only when my system temp increases dramatically because of extensive 3D gaming (e.g. an hour of FarCry) with an SLI setup. Is it worth going through the trouble to switch over to an XP-90 with these kinds of temps? 6C over the case temp isn't too shabby in my experience.

those temps are fine.

the only reasons to upgrade your cooler that i can think of are 1) noise, if it bothers you 2) higher overclocking, if you overclock at all or 3) you have more money than you know what to do with, in which case i think that you will find a bottle of something premium like grey goose or jonnie walker blue label to be more fulfilling.

The thing is that I kind of hit a wall with my winchester at around 2.45Ghz. It doesn't seem to be heat related since it only gets to 40C under load, so I don't know if the XP-90 is worth it. Oh and I already have the XP-90 sitting around. I just don't know if I want to go through the hassle of taking out my MB to put it on :).

My P4 3.0c was only stable to 3.45 Ghz on the stock cooler. CPU ran close to 60c at full load.

Upgrading the cooler to a XP-90 allowed me to overclock to 3.6 Ghz stable. Temps under 50c under load.

It's a CPU limit, it wouldn't go stable over 3.6 Ghz even with higher voltage (booted XP at 3.75Ghz), etc. CPU never got over 50c

Was the extra 150 Mhz worth the $ ? Probably not.

Was the quieter fan & cooler temp worth it ? Yes, even if my room gets too hot over the summer, I know the CPU temps will be fine.
