XFX support problem

I've noticed some older threads detailing problems with XFX's customer support. This is sharing my experience so far. I received a 7900gs from XFX and started experiencing crashing in my games shortly after installing it. Eventually my screen would just start artifacting then going black and crashing whenever I played a game for any length of time (usually within 10 minutes).

I started a ticket on their online support about the crashing, and then when the blackouts starting happening I called and asked for an RMA number. I actually got through to tech support extremely quickly because they accidentally left their phone message up about office hours and I dialed 0 for their operator and asked for the support desk (phone trickery ftw!). The guy I talked to was extremely friendly and helpful, and after waiting about 2 week for my new card I installed in 2 days ago.

It is crashing in games again, at first it just crashed once or so the first day I had it, now it's starting to do the same thing the first one did getting gradually worse). I updated my ticket but decided to write in the forum here asking for advice on how I should proceed. I bought from Newegg, so I don't expect xfx to refund me money, but paying for 2 shipping charges (around 25-35 dollars) plus having a nonfunctioning system for a full month seems an extremely poor way to do customer service.

My friends evga card (also a 7900gs) runs for hours in my system without crashing (In Supreme Commander even, which crashes if you breathe too hard on it).

Am I basically doomed to keep trying to get the same card from them until one works right?

it seems that u might have power issues, get a good PSU

I have a corsair hx620 watt powersupply, which I've read is a decent powersupply. The fact that my friends evga card works fine for hours of gaming in my system is very damaging to the case that something is amiss in my system..

This is unusual, especially since that card is such a reliable video card. Please PM me with the RMA number or the ticket number so I can get this resolved for you.

Doubtfull since his friends card works fine without crashing on his system but it's still the same model (7900GS).

OP

I suggest you try this;

Use Nvflash to back up your friends bios onto a floppy. Also back up your existing bios from the XFX card.

Try flashing the EVGA card's bios onto the XFX card. *** Now remember make sure they truly are identical cards as far as memory size and all. If they are then the bios should work fine. See if this prevents or stops the crashing altogether. I think what I've noticed from XFX is that their bios' are usually the reason they don't work well in certain systems or with certain monitors.

I have the very same power supply in my [H] video card evaluation rig, and it runs highly overclocked video cards, most of which demand more power than a 7900 GS. I've never had a power related issue with that computer.

This kind of thing, unfortunately, just happens. I had a similar experience with my Logitech G5 mouse. It broke and I RMAd it. The mouse they sent me didn't work at all. I just returned the defective mouse that they gave me, and they sent me a new one which worked fine. It sucks, but it happens.

From how it sounds, I don't think the OP wants to VOID the warranty. Besides, the XFX rep has already said he'd help. If he's lucky, maybe he'll work something out where they (XFX) will foot the shipping bills (at least this time around).

Have you uninstall the drivers, run drivercleaner and reinstall drivers? My experience with XFX Support has been outstanding and you tell just by talking to a tech support guy (as you did) also, on top of that we have XFXSupport on the forum which will help you even more. Don't worry he will take good care of you.
