I've been fighting with my 5870 now for a while. I had been having massive stuttering while gaming and sometimes would just outright stop displaying to a black/gray screen of death. Well XFX told me to RMA it and sent a replacement, yet its doing the exact same thing. I've tried everything I know to eliminate something else on my machine, but they are driving me nuts not wanting to replace their replacement. I've ran memtest with no errors and tried just 1 stick of ram and it still stutters and BSOD/GSOD's. I popped my 3870 back in and everything runs fine. Any idea what the heck is going on or is it just another bad card from XFX? Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What game. What resolution. What are your system specs. what are the temps on the card and cpu.

I would try running some more stress tests.

Mainly iRacing and left 4 dead 2 lately. System specs are as follows

920 i7
Gigabyte x58a-ud3r
1000w coolermaster
3x2gb gskill ddr3
windows 7 64 bit

Temps gaming on it are about 58-60c under load and 48c idle. CPU temps are about 36c idle and 44c loaded.

I've also been getting a lot of black flashing screens when updating anything in the cat control center like when its installing the drivers. Have the latest 10.7's installed too

what about your cpu and ram is that overclocked?
did you clean out the drivers?
test the card on another machine? or use a borrower card on your pc?
is the card seating properly?
clean install of windows?
try older drivers?
which version of windows you running?
do all games screw up?
do you have the latest xfx bios on your card?
is the ram a cpu voltage accurately set?
running latest bios for your motherboard?
updated to latest directx runtimes?

-cpu and ram are stock
-drivers cleaned out via driver sweeper
-needing to get a 4 pin to pci-e converter to test on brothers machine and his 3870 works like a champ without stuttering.
-card is seating properly
-had the problems on my old install of windows 7 ultimate 64, HD died then have the same problems on new install of windows 7 ultimate 64 with new HD
-have only tried l4d2 and iracing and both stutter and screw up in 3d
-xfx sent me new card with latest bios after old one died
-ram was set to recommended 1.65 and cpu is running stock volts
-older bios for mobo, not the newest
-have not updated latest directx runtime

I hope you also know the Gray screens are also sometimes just gray BSOD's. When windows freaks out sometimes the GPU does too, many people reported it a while ago and it happened because a lot of their systems were unstable.

I would start checking for system stability, check your RAM using memtest, also take your PSU to a local PC store or pick up a PSU checker to see if your PSU could possibly sending out erratic voltages everywhere.

Could really be anything.

Try memtest first though and let it run for a couple hours, have an odd feeling it could be related to a bad stick probably.

Ram has been running with no errors and 10.4 cats do the same. PSU seems alright, but I need to check 100% sure. I don't understand why my old 3870 would work perfectly and this 5870 is being such a piece of junk.

The only way I solved my xfx 5870 gray screens of death was to flash the bios with the MSI version and use afterburner to keep it at 850/1200 all the time.

I figured out what was causing my crashes. In bfbc2, when you go from the intro video to login screen, the clocks would go down to 157/400, and then boom, GSOD.

I'm using 10.4 cats, with CCC and MSI afterburner and as long as I load my ccc profile and afterburner profile on startup, it's all good.

thanks for the idea. I've got a PSU tester comin tomorrow so I can see if its undervolting at all, but if not, my hardware is not the cause of it and I'll give that a try. Just frustrating to no end is all...

have you tried to overclock or downclock the card? when you set custom clocks the card will run that 24/7. if the issue is with the mode changing that happens between idle and load modes then this could pin point it.

Make sure that you have your memory voltage set to the memory manufacturer's specifications. Almost all X58 motherboards will boot at a memory voltage of 1.5V which may be stable enough to boot in to Windows but may be unstable once you start doing anything. Most memory for an X58 platform above 1333 runs at 1.65V. Even some 1.5V memory runs better with some additional voltage like 1.55 or 1.6. i7s are officially rated for 1333 MHz memory, though almost all will run much higher. Try running your memory at 1333 MHz 1.6v. Memtest won't test for this small instability. It is best for testing when a section of memory is actually bad and cannot be written to or read from. Unstable memory settings has been one of the largest causes, possibly the largest cause, of grey screen lockups that we have seen.

I also wondered about his memory voltage but since i'm not on DDR3 i didn't speak on it. But it is true that some memory needs a tad bit more voltage to trully be 100% stable.

Also, in the past I had to swap my Memory from one set of slots to the next one to get the system stable.

Listen to the XFX support guy...he should be able to help you some more.

@xfxrep 1200 for a 5970 is crazy, xfxgirl should some with it and give the customer a hand job for that much.

any chance the xfx 5870 can get an updated and better tuned bios.

Some have had BIOS updates. For those that have, it is available in Support Files for that products. If your product is registered then log in to support and click Download Support Files next to the card on your list and then select BIOS as the filter. If one is available then it will list it. They are all done by DOS bootable flash drive. Instructions and all files needed are there.

Ticket # is 313680

Just got my PSU tester in and will try that tonight. Ram has been running 1.65v since day one. Also got a 4 pin molex to 6 pin pci-e so I can try this sucker in my brothers machine and see if issue persists.

Alright, I received a replacement card and it worked fine for a bit and then went haywire after getting a yellow flashing screen while gaming in f1 2010. Now it currently won't post windows and if it randomly does from time to time it flashes so bad I can hardly see the desktop and what I'm doing.

exibit A (flickering): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfsPdNGiGoA

exibit B (not posting): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nekMJo4IkvE

I've switched power supplies, tested the ram, updated chipset drivers. Besides replacing the motherboard, I've pretty much tested every piece of hardware and its all running fine. This is now the 3rd card I've had and the lifespan keeps getting shorter. Any suggestions on what to do would be appreciated. Very close to ordering a new mobo and testing to see if that helps at all.... current mobo is Gigabyte x58a-ud3r v1.0 running windows 7 x64

You've done everything but changed the MB. so it's down to the MB.

You could sell your card for cheap for someone else to deal with XFX.

Did you make sure that each time you got back a different card by looking at the serial?

are the temps on the card ok? how high does the temp get? is your PSU up to the task?

does the problem show itself under heavy load or light loads or both?

different card every time. I've tried it on my brothers e6600 rig and does the same thing, just wondered if it was my board that caused it or what. temp gets to 65 under full load and i've tried 3 different psu's with the same result. Problem right now is even in 2d with flickering and shuts down completely in 3d.

since you even tried a different rig i will assume you tried a different monitor and monitor cable.

well, how is that xfx warranty working? i mean it's lifetime. at some point they ought to send you a 5970 for all your stress and troubles IMHO.

while on the subject of xfx lifetime warranty...this is crap that this poor guy has to do deal with this mess. I own an xfx5870 and no issues but i hope i never have to deal with this lame service he's getting.

Stu Stu stu stuttering issue? It could also be your harddrive about to crap out soon. I had this stutter issue with a HDD, my BFBC2 would stutter at the logo screen. And after that I RMA"d the HDD and all was well after receiving my replacement and re-installing my stuff.
Sorry if you posted something about the hdd I just seen your thread and thought you could use my 2cents.

Hope you get to the bottom of things.
Goo Luck

he tried 2 different machines...that cancels out the HD as a reason.

i suggests he record some videos and posted on youtube so people can see how XFX takes care of him. they should sent him a 5970 black edition for all his troubles. I really feel for the guy.

This is what happened when i tried to boot up after that yellow screen of death flickering until it just went yellow. Powered down and wouldn't power back up.

This is what the stuttering/flickering looks like and is happening on 2 different machines with the only thing being consistent is the card.

I've torn down 2 machines trying to rule things out, but everything I do seems to rule them out. I pop in my old 3870 (which is in the 2nd machine and pop it into mine, it runs like a champ. Just frustrating and I'd like to figure out what exactly is causing it to fail.

HUUUUGE props to the xfx team. After the 4th card, it runs like a champ. Changed out the motherboard which HAD to be the problem as everything else had changed. XFX support is by far the best of any hardware manufacture I've worked with. Thanks again, you have created a life long xfx customer.

glad things worked out. :D
