XFX 5850 hitting 91c

That's messed up, assuming you have regular case airflow. Return it.

I wouldn't think that furmark getting almost any card un into the 90's was that big of a a deal.

So I'm considering whether or not to return it. It does come with a lifetime warranty, but still.

Forget Furmark, what are you regular temps?

We can get an idea of what the culprit is if you let us know what it idles at. Also, download some proper tools so you can see what voltage it is applying for max speed.

Mine 5870 idles @ 0.950v
At load it runs @ 1.175v

These are all bios settings. See if your load voltage is different than other 5850 users.

That's extremely high. I think your heat sink might be defective, it might not be connected properly. Or your dust filter might be gone and you have a lot of built up dust inside. There are a ton of options. I'd RMA it and get another.

Well I went into ATi overdrive and found that, even at 90c, the fan is running at only 40%.

I turned it up to 100% and the temps went down to 75c, pretty quickly.

Is it possible my fan sensor is faulty, or something like that? It's very loud at 100%, and very quiet at 40$. Could XFX have designed it to never go above 40%?

Also, idle temps are around 40c, room tep is 80f, and crysis got me up to 82c.

it looks like its the non-reference problem.

its XFX cheap design, don't expect much from it.

Use MSI Afterburner to set up a dynamic fan profile. If you find the noise levels acceptable while keeping the card cooled at whatever its regular temperature is supposed to be, I guess you could hang onto it.

There isn't anything I'm meant to do to setup fan profiles or anything? it should just work out of the box right?

I'm probably going to RMA it. Not messing around with a $300 investment.

No, if you read what he posted, the issue is the fan doesn't ramp up over 40%. Most cases like this, XFX released fixed bios for people with fan speed issues.

No, contact XFX. There have been people who have been unhappy with the default fan profile and XFX have sent them new bioses that addressed their problems. You may have recieved a version of the card with a very conservative fan profile for some reason.

Im afraid they're going to tell me 91c are normal temps. That's what asus told me when my laptop gpu was hitting 100c. I'll mail them tonight though.

I found someone who was experiencing almost the same exact issues as i am, 6 months ago.

I don't think my card is underclocking, but it makes that high pitched squeal during 3d mark vantage loading, and gets to about 91/92c

While 90 degrees is hot, its not going to damage the card. They shouldnt let you rma it for something as stupid as that. Just find the sweetspot with the fan speed and don't forget that furmark is hell for your card. I would NEVER expect to see it at 90 outside of furmark.

run some games first before you base whether your going to rma it because of what furmark says.. furmark will push that card 100 times harder then any game would.. if its still hitting 90C+ in game then go ahead and see if you can rma it.. its quite possible the fans just not ramping up to 100%.. 91C is still not that bad if thats the case..

Had a 2 hour Crysis gaming session.

Max GPU temp was 84c. Stupid Fan never went higher than 30%

My CPU fan got loud as hell, so it wouldn't even bother me if the GPU fan kicked in. Kept my cpu cool at 48c max too.

Don't know if that is RMAable or not.

contact XFX and ask for the new bios that some one mentioned earlier but the temps perfectly fine even if you left it the way it is.. sure its running hot but its not GTX 400 series hot.. lol

I just ordered this same card off newegg, it should hopefully be arriving by sometime next week so we can compare temperatures in Furmark. I hope mine doesn't run as hot as yours

I don't consider that hot but i live in tropics where is 30c day in day out. i just go into ati cataylst control center and into graphic over drive section and manually set the fan for the fixed highest speed you can take with out it bothering you. for my case was about 45% and considering my 5870 doesn't ramp past 35% even in furmark this keeps my card nice cool for days of crunching on bonic which is more load than most games will ever give.

I just tested this out on my 5870 and it was staying consistent at 89C with the fan speed at 50% so I really dont think that anything is wrong with your card. GPU's are meant to handle large amounts of heat so I really dont think that 91C is going to damage the card. Like everyone else has said, if it really bothers you then you can set the fan speed manually to whatever you can handle noise wise and you should be fine.

fan speed is pretty much not meant to hit 100% unless it's throttling. My reference 5870 doesn't go above 30% fan speed when gaming... my non reference one hits about 40% fan speed. Both stay in the 70C's during gaming.

If it doesn't get hot while gaming, then don't bother with RMA.

If temps bother you, Catalyst Control Centre can set fan profiles to hot keys so that I just hit a combination of keys and it changes the fan speed to whatever I want. Usually I will simply press ctrl-shift-alt-z with my left hand to crank my fan up to 70% before I start a game.

I'm pretty sure going and setting up a custom fan profile will keep me below 80c, even with the fan set to 40 or 50%. And I'm still waiting to hear back from XFX. my room is 85f too, I doubt that's helping

84c really doesn't seem that bad for Crysis (there's not a more demanding game?), but if other people are getting 75-77c with the same card, without messing with any fan settings...

Either way I'm hoping XFX has a bios fix for me, some guy had the same problem as I am over at rage3d. It looks like he ended up returning it, for a different brand no less, and his new ones fine. His was asus, but still, same problem with the fan.

I went into afterburner and adjusted my fan profile. Afterburner is an awesome program!

Crysis is not getting any hotter than 77c max (mostly 73-75c), and mass effect barely hit 70c. And that's with the fan profile only set to 50%! Furmark got me to low 80's, but that's furmark.

Only complaint I have now is the card makes a high pitch sqeal during the crysis and 3dmark loading screens. It goes away completely when I'm in game or on the desktop, though.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? Is coil whine the most likely culprit, and if so, is it worth the RMA?

RMA for coil whine during loading screens? You must be crazy! :(

I avoid RMA as much as I can. I'm without my card for 2 weeks to 1 month, I won't get a new card back, etc.

It would be with newegg, for a new one.
By your response I'm guessing coil whine isn't a big deal and doesn't mean my card is going to fail or blow up? lol

Update* I think it's my PSU that has the coil whine, not my GPU. I took a rolled up piece of paper to locate the noise, and bam it's coming from the PSU. And sure enough, only when FPS shoots above 2500 in certain loading screens.
Anyway, That's it for my GPU troubles. After adjusting fan settings, everything is cool and quiet. Shouldn't need to return it, and if something does go wrong down the line I've got it registered for my lifetime warranty =)

Thanks a lot for your help and replies!

i'm one of those people...i registered my card and in there xfx support pages they had a bios revision that updated the fan profile. mines was running at 100% and loud as hell...now it's quiet as a mouse even under load. he should register the card and do a bios update if they have one available. if the card still runs hot then he could try to RMA. i for one would let it burn itself out...by the time it days maybe they'll send you a newer better model card...which would equal a free upgrade.:)

You could always talk to an XFX tech. They more than anyone else here know more about common issues concerning their cards more than anyone else. I'm sure whether you need a new fan bio's, better cooling, or an RMA they will guide you through it.

In normal operation idle temperatures for our 5800 series cards can range from the 40's to the 60's, and under full load we usually see 70's to 80's, all Celsius.

When I say normal operation I do mean gaming, benchmarks and artificial stress tests however do have different results, and will cause the card to get hotter normal,

For the 5800 cards, it is indeed normal for Furmark to run the cards high 80's, low 90's; almost single every time. It’s what the program is designed to do.

The question is, without any fan control programs, letting the BIOS take care of the fan control, what kind of temperatures do you get when playing a normal game (no furmark or benchmarks)?

I have also just bought this card from newegg. I've been searching all over the internet for other owners with this overheating issue.

My card came with the free AvP game, and it would easily hit 90C when playing. At 90C the fan is still < 50% which is just silly. Once you get past 90C, it still start to down clock the GPU to 500mhz, i have never seen the gpu fan go past 50%.... When i manually turn the fan to 100%, it does stay closer to the 75C range.... the card is super quite because of the throttled fan, but it does idle around 60C.... also, it doesn't have any ram sinks....

I had to RMA my card due to other problems (striped colored glitch, and dual monitor flickering). Unfortunately, since my card came with the free game, it was only eligible for a exchange replacement. i'm gonna look into the bios update whenever i get my card back from the egg.

Crysis on gamer settings hits about 84c max, probably a few higher on enthusiast settings. Less intensive games stay in the 70's

I just tested my XFX on Furmark for an hour, temps were climbing to about 90c (28-30c ambient room temperature). I decided to take a risk and pop off the heatsink and replace the (terribly applied) thermal paste with some Tuniq TX-2. Temps dropped to about 82c under load.
