XConnect PSU

Some of the older ones weren't real bad quality, back when they were getting the guts from Wintech, but they seem to have gone to using Young Year as an OEM now and they've slipped.

Myself, I've never liked them much at all.

Through the end of 2004, they weren't too bad for a $70 or less PS, but ALL of the 2005's are DANGEROUS JUNK! :(

Ok so why does this keep coming up? People should use the search feature....really. This is always an explosive PSU topic (and PSU.....sometimes).

X-Connect's are not high end PSU's. A few of the units have died in real tests. The Maximum PC unit did.....it wasn't a perfect test but better than "I hooked up x,y,z with my bling case fans dropped in and used some software to check my rails and they were consistantly high but high is good....right?.....well they were consistant in my software...and oh my god modular cables this thing rocks so hard.......buy this!" The unit died. Ultra says they got an engineering unit. Well so did trusted then: http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?head=64&page=2307

Do not buy an X-Connect expecting it to be a high end psu. It isn't. It is a low-mid premodded PSU. Expect nothing else. It will deliver power...but probably with poor regulation. It will do poorly on voltage sags, it will do poorly at higher temps, it will do poorly delivering clean power, it probably won't kill your stuff, but don't run it near it's rated level.

It depends on how much you want to spend and what features/upgradability you are looking for. So how much? And any more upgradability/features are you looking for?

i'm probably flexible up to $250 CDN
and i'm gonna upgrade the mobo, cpu and vid card probably in the next few months...

Canadian huh.....ok so I can't speak to availablity but.............look at ATX2.0 supplies. If you want modular in that scenario the Antec Neopower. If you want just good supplies look at the high end supplies in the before making a thread stickie and see what is available to you in canada......and with that budget you might be able to get the best...Power PC and Cooling.

Since you're a fellow Canadian, I'm going to suggest this one (provided it's in stock soon enough):

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=14069&vpn=AX500-A&manufacture=FSP GROUP USA

Don't know too many other places to get these in Canada yet. Though, with your budget, pretty much anything up to and including the OCZ 600w is an option ;)

Who would have guessed you would have recommended that one ;)

Well I don't think personally I would recommend the OCZ over the PP&C at the same price.

lol - my infamy preceeds me ;)

I haven't actually been too wild about the OCZ 600w either... up north here the OEM Topower TOP-706P6 600w unit has shown up at a few places. $154 was the lowest last time I looked. Compared to about $250 for the OCZ version, I start wondering how much the OCZ warranty is worth to me.

Wasn't sure the PC P&C could be had for less than $250 Cdn though can it? Just tossed out the OCZ due to my brain being slower than my fingers tonight.

To me not that much. :D

I am on the otherside of the border trying to figure out the conversion and trying to find canadian shops  Not my usual places to shop. But from my conversions and if they are priced similiarly as here then it should be available.

Thanks guys

Oklahoma Wolf - i wasn't able to find thos locally

Spectre - what do you think aboutt these

although the enermax may be out of my reach

The enermax will definately work. The antec while a good supply isn't nearly as good and you can probably find better...also I don't believe it is an atx2.0 supply.

$250 Cdn. and down would get me started thinking about a PC P&C of my own... that's getting more affordable for my wallet :)

renegadez, that Enermax will do perfectly. You shouldn't need to upgrade that for a while ;)

hmmm...i'll keep looking but i haven't located a PC P&C locally yet...
Enermax is tempting but may be pushing it on that one....

Unfortunately I can't do much to help you with finding since i am about 1,000 miles south of you.......maybe some fellow canadians can help you out?

My next suggestion is the Sparkle (Fortron) FSP550-60PLG and its single 36A 12v rail from www.razorcomputers.net - these guys are more local to you than NCIX, but not sure just how much more local. I can personally vouch for their awesome service - got my 530w from them.

The only issue with that one in my opinion is the single 12v......but that really depends on what he is looking to upgrade too.

Actually that store is probably about 20 - 30 mins away from me

Yeah... I should have thrown out the name of the Sparkle FSP460-60PFN-EPS also... very similar to the AX500-A except active PFC and 80mm fan. Razor has two versions of it, one marked "AMD." Wonder if that means it's ATX-GES...

Brain, feel free to kick in now. I think it went to bed without me...

I've been googling for PC P&C in Canada for a few minutes already and I think we're out of luck on a retailer up here. Gotta buy it direct from them it seems :(

Spectre said:
That was one of the first I recommended. :D Now the upside is it is an ATX2.0 supply. Good for longevity. Downside......the extra connectors add resistance...BUT this is still a damn fine unit.

I think we may have a winner on that one cause i like the specs on it too....plus the price is nice leaving me space to probably upgrade something else as well...

but is SLI something i should look into as well?

Either of those will suit you just fine. It's all a matter of whether you need modular cables and a quiet PSU, or........just get the NeoPower :p

Yeah i'm thinking the NeoPower as well....Looks cleaner in terms of wires...

I might have dropped your name here and there :p
(But I didnt say anything about your fondness for FSP)

lol - I'm going to have to start plugging Zippy and Etasis a bit more so I don't sound too much like a Fortron fanatic. Not that Fortron makes it real hard to be one ;)

you dont see Etasis mentioned much in here
but Zippy is already fairly well represented :p

Ive an MR3-6450P

there is a rather large FSP group your joining however ;)

hmmm.....i probably should figure this part out too..
does the neopower handle amd's?

If you mean will it handle an AMD 64 bit chip, then yes.
