As the title suggests, my xbox crapped out on me and is way out of warranty. So, Ive taken it upon myself to try and repair it. Its completely disassembled, just waiting for some thermal compound cleaner and paste. Im trying the method of removing the X brackets under the motherboard and replacing the brackets with washers and bolts. Ill take pictures of the parts and the reassembly. Maybe itll work :)

Anybody on the forums had success with doing similar repairs to an Xbox?
 
i've fixed 5-7 rr'd xboxes - i've found that after the fix you have to keep the gpu cool or it will come back and snack on your ass [read: bite you]

with that being said i usually end up with frankenxboxes they work, but boy are they ugly...
 
when mine died, i bought a jasper arcade unit and sent the old one off for repair. The repaired one lasted about 11 months and died again. (gave it to the kids so they could play networked games). The jasper has been going strong ever since.......personally based upon my experience and othes that I have read in the forums, I would just get the new arcade unit, slap ur drive in (if you have one) and call it a day.
 
I'm on my second Jasper .. (5th one overall) .. it did the 3 rings , but different than the normal RRD .. it was out of warranty so I googled some videos on how to take it apart and cleaned up the tim on the chips , bent the xclamps so they applied more pressure to said chips .. reapplied some artic silver stuff .. and it's been working like a champ for over a year now and still going strong .. I keep it an open location and try to remember to blow out the dust bunnies from it from time to time as well.
