XBOX or PS3 through computer AV?

Anyone have any stories to share or wisdom to impart regarding console-to-computer hookups, either Xbox360 or PlayStation3?

My intention here is to avoid having to get an AV receiver or an external audio decoder. I'd like to plug it into my computer monitor and speakers (without having to plug/unplug anything every time I want to use either console or computer).

It looks possible to do HDMI > DVI cable from console to LCD monitor directly for digital 1080 resolution display (monitor has dual DVI inputs so that I can keep the computer hooked up at same time). For audio I was considering optical toslink from console into my htomega sound card (which has optical toslink in and out ports), which is currently running analog out to the speakers.

if your monitor has both DVI and VGA use DVI for PC and VGA for console

for audio I would just get a pair of speakers that have an aux port and a RCA->3.5 stereo cable

Logitech sells a 2.1 system with an aux port for $40 or less

I'm running a 360 on my second monitor now. Xbox VGA adapter for $5 on eBay, audio adapters for $10 at radio shack. My 19" widescreen LCD has DVI and VGA, so DVI for PC and VGA for 360. Audio goes into Line-in on sound card.

Works perfect.

You can only do HDMI > DVI with the PS3 if your monitor supports HDCP. Not sure if the same is true for the 360. I haven't heard of any really good ways to use VGA on the PS3.

For PS3 to use VGA, you should be able to

connect one of these cables (hdmi to component / audio)

to one of these cables (component to vga)

All you would have to have is 3 female/female rca connectors for the component connectors, and then whatever adapter, if any, you needed for the R/L rca audio connectors.

I use a HDFury and HDMI to DVI cable to connect my PS3 to my non-HDCP enabled monitor. Works fine, but only at 720p. Not that big a deal given almost all games don't run at 1080p anyway. ~$60 for the HDFury and cable via Monoprice.com

cyclone3d, I don't think that'd work (fairly sure not all monitors support component to VGA adapters). Could be wrong of course.
