Xbox Announcement Live Stream

If this is true, it would be a huge deal breaker for me. I buy a lot of used games, rent games, and I would base a decision on that alone.

Who knows. But even the PS4 isn't quite in the clear on this front either. From what I remember reading Sony said they will not have anything to do with controlling used games and rentals what so ever but instead are leaving that decision up to the developers and publishers. So even though the PS4 won't have any native built-in limitations, I'm sure the greedy publishers will do their own thing on the PS4.

Lol "some of the biggest names in console gaming". And Bieber and Taylor Swift are some of the biggest names in "music". And Transformers and Twilight are some of the biggest names in music.

Have another mountain dew buddy

They are the biggest names with a huge audience. That's the thing with pop culture. I'm not into that kind of stuff, either, but that's the fact. Numbers prove it. We are NOT the majority when it comes to media consumption.

If it was stronger spec wise than the PS4, MS would have been all over that angle. So, best case is it is the same or slower?

From what is known currently the PS4 has an 8-core 2GHz CPU, 8GB unified DDR5 pool, and a ~7850-7870 GPU.

Xbox is said to have a 8-core 1.6GHz CPU, 8GB unified DDR3 pool with 32MB on-die RAM (similar to the 360), and a 7790 GPU.

PS4 specs are pretty much confirmed by devs, the Xbox One however hasn't been confirmed spec wise as far as I know.

I already have all of this functionality i one box except voice commands.. Which I don't actually want.

Underwhelming stuff. Not that I expected more or would buy another M$ product.

I haven't heard that. They just say it will play used games.

So MS said the Xbox One WON'T require an always online but WILL require online activation for games. Used games are going to require activation per account (that will cost $) and a single game can only be tied to a single account. So if you sell a game or let someone use it you better be ready to either never play that game again or be ready to buy a new copy.

Also, and this is not yet confirmed, but it seems like there might be an activation limit as well.

Good buy rentals! Hope the PS4, WiiU, and current consoles can keep places like BlockBuster and Gamefly a float!

I do have a feeling that if all these things are true that MS will change it soon. I just think it's too dumb an idea to last really...or at least lets hope so.

No big deal. This has been going on for PC for years...I guarantee PS4 will soon follow suit. Only someone naive would believe they exist for the good of the gamer and not for $$$.

So Basically GAMESTOP will be open for another 7 years or so with the PS4 and Xbox One being able to play used games. A little Birdie told me that dont be surprised if there is a $5 to $10 activation fee on getting the used games to Play on a different console.

FAQs, from xbox.com
FAQs said:
Q: Does Xbox One require an “always on” Internet connection?
A: No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet. We’re designing Xbox One to be your all-in-one entertainment system that is connected to the cloud and always ready. We are also designing it so you can play games and watch Blu-ray movies and live TV if you lose your connection.

Q: How do consumers benefit by being connected to the cloud?
A: The cloud makes every experience better and more accessible. Because Xbox One is powered by the cloud:
Your games have more power available to create new gameplay, persistent worlds, and deeper experiences.
Your system and games can update automatically, so you shouldn’t have to wait for downloads or updates.
Your games and entertainment are stored and saved in the cloud, so you can access them anytime, from any Xbox One.*
Start a game, movie, or TV show on one console and finish exactly where you left off on another.
You can play multiplayer games with your friends, stream movies or TV shows right away, and enjoy the community and social features of Xbox Live.
Xbox One can recognize you, log you in and tailor your home screen just for you.
You can discover what your friends are playing, watching and listening to if they choose to share.
These are just a few examples of how customers benefit from our platform being connected to the Internet. It brings the future of TV and games to our consumers—and it’s designed for today and the decade ahead.

* Subject to content geographical restrictions.

Q: When will Xbox One launch and in what markets?
A: Xbox One will launch in markets around the world later this year. We’ll have more to share later.

Q: Can I use my current gamertag on Xbox One and will my Gamerscore and Achievements transfer?
A: Yes. Your current Xbox Live Gamertag will stay with you on Xbox One if you choose to keep it, and your hard-earned Gamerscore and Achievements will indeed carry over from Xbox 360.

Q: Will Xbox One be backward compatible with my existing games?
A: Xbox One hardware is not compatible with Xbox 360 games. We designed Xbox One to play an entirely new generation of games—games that are architected to take full advantage of state-of-the-art processors and the infinite power of the cloud. We care very much about the investment you have made in Xbox 360 and will continue to support it with a pipeline of new games and new apps well into the future.

Q: Will Xbox One allow players to trade in, purchase and play pre-owned games?
A: We are designing Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games. We’ll have more details to share later.

Q: Will my current Xbox Live Gold membership work with Xbox One or will I have to buy a new one?
A: You do not need to buy a new Xbox Live Gold membership. Your current membership will work on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Q: Why require Kinect with every Xbox One?
A: The all new Kinect is now an essential and integrated part of the platform. By having it as a consistent part of every Xbox One, game and entertainment creators can build experiences that assume the availability of voice, gesture and natural sensing, leading to unrivaled ease of use, premium experiences and interactivity for you.

Q: Do I need to have a specific cable or satellite TV provider to watch live TV on Xbox?
A: Our goal is to enable live TV through Xbox One in every way that it is delivered throughout the world, whether that’s television service providers, over the air or over the Internet, or HDMI-in via a set top box (as is the case with many providers in the US). The delivery of TV is complex and we are working through the many technologies and policies around the world to make live TV available where Xbox One is available.

Q: Xbox One is a more powerful product compared to Xbox 360, but does it also use more power?
A: No. By providing multiple power states in Xbox One, we’ve balanced energy efficiency with functionality. We’ve taken a completely different approach to how Xbox One consumes power. It only uses the power it needs at that particular moment for the task at hand.

In my eyes though this doesn't seem very promising though. Sony said, "Used games? Sure no problem!".

MS says...used games? Ehhh...we'll have more details (i.e. pricing and limitations) on that later.

I mean, think about it, if they aren't creating limitations and aren't going to charge then what "details" are we waiting for? If they aren't doing any of that why couldn't they just say, "Used games? Sure no problem!"?

Anyone notice every corporate presentation these days is the same Steve Jobs format with execs getting on stage in front of a giant screen to wave their arms around and cite absurd stats about something while trying to sound really profound and like their widget is curing cancer and changing humanity.

I didn't like Steve for my own reasons - mostly to do with his locked down, walled off approach to computing (which Microsoft is full steam ahead on embracing now) but damn if he didn't inspire a generation of copycats.

Perfect example, this woman that's the head of 343: "Halo has always been more than a game... it's been a way to tell stories". Good god. A game popularized by its multiplayer consisting of bunny hopping and floating around a map pew-pewing until the round's over ...has such misunderstood and deeper meaning *faint*

The lack of backwards compatibility for games is the deal breaker for me & their excuse that the One can't run them is lame at best. Plus, what about Xbox 360 Slim hard drives? Or SSD's for that matter? Are the controllers at least backwards compatible?

Sorry, you don't have to love, or even like them, but to deny that COD and EA are two of the biggest names is console gaming shows your either suffering from a serious case of denial or your totally clueless.

BTW, the examples you provided have the same issue. Love them or hate them but they ARE some of the biggest names in their fields.

Hehehehe Nice! :D

Ok, this is bugging me..

Shiny Black plastic IS NOT industrial...It is modern. There is nothing "industrial" about the Xbox One.

I am glad they killed the always connected rumor. Though right now I am failing to see what it can do that the PS4 can't without me paying for Live. I will probably end up buying one at some point like I did the 360, but probably a year or two after launch. It is an excellent looking redesign though and having it as an optional blu-ray player is a definite plus. So long as I can not have it between my DVR and TV, and the kinect crap can be completely disabled, I am on board for one for some offline play.

Stop slurping on Sony for a minute and look at Sony's track record.

When the Wii was released Sony said "motion control is a gimmick and we wont lower ourselves to such a thing" and then they rushed right out and added motion control to their stuff.

Xbox 360 came out and Sony said basically "Wow, that's far to much to charge for a game console" and a year later they released their console for $100 more then the 360 had cost.

So all told why should we take anything they say at face value?

Sounds like they'll charge a fee for used games.

The activation fee will kill off Gamestop. Gamestop owns almost 80+ percent of its profits to used games , forcing an activation fee will kill that off. People will be less likely to spend $55 for a new used game that requires a $10 activation fee. At that point it would make more sense to simply BUY a new game.

It'll mean less trade in games , it'll mean less used titles. It's going to kill off the rental industry and the used gaming market is going to become a fraction of what it was.

We all kinda knew this was coming , developers and publishers are always whining about not getting a cut of the used gaming market.

Depends on the consumer. For an apple consumer "shiny and made by apple" is considered earth shattering :D

Well, the Apple loyalists think that way certainly but they picked up many more "normal" consumers with their latest products who they could lose to MS with their slick offering ;)

Actually, I am surprised we haven't seen Samsung launch something for the living room yet ... with Nintendo on their way down this could be a great time for a fresh new Asian player in the market ... maybe they could buy Ouya or make their own Android based gaming system

I personally won't be purchasing either the PS4 or the Xbox One. I don't see anything they offer other than exclusive titles (Uncharted, Gears of War etc.) that can't be played on the PC.

Are they seriously expecting developers to use this crap. I don't need to remind anyone the shit games that came out for the first one and the fact that it did not work. I don't see developers wasting time making features for this unless Microsoft makes it mandatory for games to have some Kinect functionality. I could ramble and rant more but I'll leave it at that. Long Live the PC gaming community.

Activision publishing CEO: "Everyone was expecting us to play it safe and bring out Modern Warfare 4. Instead we're bringing out Call of Duty: Ghosts"

LMAO. He's congratulating himself for basically saying "Everyone was expect us to play it safe and bring out New and Improved Tide™. Instead, we're happy to announce Tide™: Now Even Better®"

And he said it with a straight face

The lack of backwards compatibility for games is the deal breaker for me & their excuse that the One can't run them is lame at best.

The switch to x86 architecture isn't an excuse though. Its the same with the PS4, you won't be able to play PS3 disc games on the PS4 because of the switch to x86 architecture. The only way bc could happen is that every game would have to run off an emulator (this is how some original Xbox games run on the 360) or they use cloud to stream older games like what Sony plans to do.

Boneheaded, why do they think kinect is so important when the gimmick has already worn off for most people. Its more of that New Microsoft Thinking. Metro. Kinect. They believe that forcing what should be opt in choices will compel developers to develop for it. When will they realize things just don't work that way, its got to happen organically or you just look desperate or draconian.

I'll probably end up buying both new consoles eventually just to play any exclusives but its looking like PS4 will be the first purchase since they're dead set on squandering the built up goodwill of past products.

Exactly people don't seem to realize that part of the expense of the PS3 and PS2 was that they actually included the processing and video units (well the PS was one chip) of the previous unit. The cell/NV chip and the PPC chip in the current gens are way to large and complicated and would require way to much work to communicate correctly with the rest of the hardware on the system to make it work this gen. I also wouldn't trust the ability for a generic software emulator to pull this off either.

This is a stupid way to look at it. The Kinect is required because its now a standard component the hardware and they want developers to be able to rely on it's existence to develop games for the system.

It's not about forcing developers to do anything. It's about letting developers design around it and not wonder whether people who bought the system have it or not. The PS4 now has gyro has movement features as a standard part of the controller. Wouldn't you expect that some games are going to work to well if you opened it up and disabled the gyro. Same thing with the Kinect. Now developers can go in a setup features that would only work with a kinect connected and not have to worry that you might not have one and therefore your gameplay is horribly affected.

Now whether or not you want to play games with those features and developers find out that for the most part people want a game that works 98% through a controller and only the controller can now be handled more organically.

I can't believe semi-intelligent people still get excited about consoles. I grew out of that when I was 13. Every generation of consoles is just another money grab. When they release something that is actually awesome and not anti-consumer, maybe I'll actually give it a look.

Microsoft and sony pretty much make all their money from the sale of games and usually take a loss on the sale of the console. They have every incentive to eliminate backwards compatibility and the used game market...

For the first time ever the more I hear about these new consoles the less I care since it is the same old Crap with a bunch of social media and TV crap I don't want anyway and they are just weak ass Pcs shoved into a box and called a console.

Oh and I can't play all the fucking xbox live arcade crap or games on it and have to much crap hooked up to the TV already that I have not finshed playing.

I hate kinect and the camera and don't have enough room with the couch in the way of the TV anyway to use that crap.

So Don't care it's a console with the same crap dumbed down shooters and PC ports as the old one and the PC has been doing that since the 90s and doing it better so I still don't care.

Oh and the wii U still has no games and nothing uses that fucking tablet controler to do anything new it is a except be a big ass DS and nintendo has failed to shock anybody like the did with the NES SNES or even the damn gamecube with anything cool on this thing so far so don't care about it either.

these things are not worth the effort to craw behind my TV and sound system and hook things up and find a space for it.

Actually I disagree, Gamestop will have to work harder to rape it's customers (here buy this game for $60 and then we'll pay you $25 a week later if you trade it back to us, and then we'll sell if to the next person for $55.)

I'm sure GS will try and force the entire activation fee onto users, by paying $10 less for used games (if that's what it fee is) but I think doing that would result in far fewer trade ins, and the last number I saw said that something like 85% of GS's profits came from used game sales.
