XBOX 360 controller fail in Win 7 64, code 43, help!

I was just starting to play DiRT 2 and my wired XBOX 360 controller stopped working all of a sudden. Now when I plug it in, I get the message:
USB device not recognized
and it's reported as code 43

I've tried installing the official Microsoft driver, though that seems horribly unnecessary. I've tried uninstalling everything under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" in the device manager, but that didn't do anything. I turned the computer off and turned off the power supply for a couple minutes. Nothing has helped.

I just tested the controller with my laptop, and it's not working on that anymore either. Is it possible that the controller itself needs to be "reset" somehow? Or is it just broken? I just tested my Street Fighter IV gamepad on both computers, and it still works fine, so I'm leaning towards thinking there's a major problem with the standard xbox 360 controller itself. Any last ditch reset ideas? Or should I really just get a new controller? It just feels like it would be such a shame to have to get a new one since it's still in pristine mechanical condition.

I'd really appreciate any insights. Thanks!

From what you tried, it looks like you have been googling and trying all the "fixes" people have out there. I know because I have been dealing with this issue as well with a mouse.

I think MS screwed something up with their USB drivers in Win7 64.

Other things to try you didn't list:
Update your motherboard's chipset drivers.
Unplugged all USB devices from your PC (webcam, printer, external drives, usb headsets, etc...) then uninstall all the USB controllers in the device manager. (I have a laptop USB cooler that is causing my mouse to freeze, though it is not the root cause, but makes it happen more frequently.)

Out of curiosity, what is USB controller is listed? Is it ICH9?

In the device manager it has 17 listings: NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller
NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Root Hub
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller (3x)
Standard Open HCD Host Controller (4x)
USB Composite Device
USB Root Hub (7x)

Maybe that's not what you meant though? I have this mobo if it helps:
MSI 870A-G54

Try shutting off the computer, pulling the battery on the mobo for a few minutes, put it back in and boot. I've seen a few people saying they had code 43 with usb problems and this fixed it for them.

This should work. If not Id say that the controller is bad. This happens with usb cables every now and then. I have to say with all the keyboards mice EHDD and controllers I use none have shorted on me. Luck of the draw really.

Thanks for the advice. I tried this, but it didn't work. I guess the controller is just bad. Lame.

Yeah, code 43 pretty much points to the cable or device being plugged in a as bad. Can you call MS for a warranty exchange?

I got it about a year ago from amazon. I don't have any of the original packaging or anything either. Do you think I would be covered by any kind of warranty at this point (it would be great if so!)?

usually about 30-90 days for accessories. Depending on the company you might beable to get a replace if you have a sob story.
