Which card is better? The X850 is clocked higher but only has 12 pipes compared to the X800XL. X850 is a little more expensive also.

I have the x850 pro running 2 2005 fpw's with no problems, runs all games like a charm. I have the video card overclocked to 620 mem/ 550 GPU on stock cooling. It can go higher, but i live in SoCal in a house with no a/c, so its starts getting hot up in my room.

hope this helps, you will find happiness with both cards!

The X800XL is faster than the X850Pro.
I think [H]ardOCP had a review a while back, or atleast a link.

I guess more pipes almost always equals a better card even at "slower" speeds.

I'm not sure why ATI even released the x850 pro. Its more expensive than a x800 xl and performs a little worse being only 12 pipes (it may have more OC potential i dont know). ATI has made some bonehead marketing moves with this generation of cards.

because .13 micron with low-k produces a lot of messed up boards that can only run 12 pipes...

If the X850 Pro is clocked decently higher than the X800 Pro it'll be faster. But not fast enought to warrant the price differene, so I'd say the X800 XL.

BTW: The X850 are made with the .11 process empty.

If it was made on .11, it wouldn't be able to clock above 450Mhz or so...

the x800xl is .11, everything higher is .13 with low-k...

empty's right, I wonder if there's any success rate of pipe enabling, though probably not.
I haven't seen many people with the x850 pro, I wonder what type of money ATi is making on it

It doesn't really matter. Both card's performance will be almost identical. Go for the cheaper of the 2, which is probably the XL, but don't quote me on that.
