With my case closed my X800XL reaches nearly 170F under load. I've got a Zalman 700-cu installed on it , but when I did I just took the thermal grease from the stock cooler and reapplied it. Now I've got some AS3 that I'm going to apply and hopefully that will reduce temps a bit. Should I go ahead and remove the GPU shim while I'm at it ? Will this make any appreciable difference ? Tell me what you think. Thanks.

The shim is not the problem it used to be, it will make no difference except a voided warrenty if removed.

Yea, dont remove the shim, not worth the possible extra troubles.

Try some AS3, but that may only reduce a few degrees. Make sure contact is secure and tight between the chip and the HSF. Other then that it doesnt make sense, ans that HSF should keep things plenty cool. I Know most videocards should IDLE arround 55 c or 131 F. If thats your load, its not horrible, my 7900 GTX's as well as my old 6800 Ultra warning temp was 135 C so you are way below that, not quite sure why your running so hot, but if your not having problems in games I would do the AS3 and call it a day.

that is extremly HOTT, my X800XL runs at 32-35C idle and 47-50C load depending on the ambiant temp. im running the AC Silencer 5. maybe you should try to get some more airflow going in your case. re-using the thermal paste probably isnt helping much either, you should switch it ut ASAP!!

Reusing thermal paste is bad idea.

Make sure you clean off the old paste completely on the heatsink and GPU core before applying the new AS.

X800 XT PE with AS3 and used Arctic Cooler 5 runs <40 C idle, <50 C full load. The case has a blow hole for the card and room temp is 72-80 F. The cooler you have should do better than what you are getting. I would leave the shim on for sure.

170ºF is only about 76ºC, which is in the range of the video card design, maybe a little on the high side but should still work.

Better TIM may reduce the temps a few degrees, not much more. You should look into better case cooling instead.

In a quiet PC a video card idle at 40-55*C is just fine. We don't all like sitting next to a turbine all day.

Yep, my old Tyan G9700-ProM with hardware monitoring used to hit that high and ran and still runs just fine.
