ok I just got my new graphics card, X800XL for AGP and it's my first ever ATI card. Before when playing CS:S I was using my 5950 flashed to 5950 Ultra and in CS:S my normal FPS was around 40. I'm getting just about the same FPS with this graphics card!! Benchmarks have improved a lot, but gameplay still seems poor. Are there any kind of settings I need to be enabling or anything? I'm using ATI Tray Tools to OC and look at temps. Right now my clock is at 450/590. Idle temps are 38, load temps are ~50. Someone please help me!! This is so driving me nuts. I know it must be something dumb to.

Also when I enter games why does the screen go blank as if the resolution is different than the desktop because it's not. I run at 1280 X 1024, no AA or anything, just regular settings.
Could it be because the X800XL has two of the displays? Second one isn't hooked up but it still always mentions the 2nd monitor.

Anyways please help me!

Thanks

CS:S is still a very CPU bound game because of the physics and AI. However, that X800XL will allow you to up the AA/AF settings without losing FPS.

I figured it was my CPU, but it still seems at times I get less FPS with this new card. So that's why I was wondering if I had something dumb enabled or what. Also my specs are below, sorry forgot to post them the first time :(

Athlon XP 2500 OC'd to 3200
1024 DDR 400 ram Corsair Value Ram
Asus A78NX-E Motherboard
Aspire Full Tower Case w/ 8 fans total
X800XL OC'd to 450/950

You might not see any performance difference without turning up the options, but with a card like an X800XL you should really crank up the AA and AF. Your cpu does hold you back a bit, but turning up AA and AF is really where you'll see the performance difference between your older card and your X800XL.

I upgraded from a P4 3.0E and a 6600GT. Still playing at 1680x1050, but now I get to turn up the AAx4 and AFx8. I could probably go higher, but I've barely began experimenting with this card. :D

alright I turned up my settings and yeah big difference there. For FarCry I can turn up everything and it still plays pretty damn well. But about the resolution changing I just used Reforce like how I had to for my Geforce FX 5900 and it fixed that right up. Question though. I knew the FX line had problems with resolutions, but I never heard anything about the X800 series having problems like that. Am I just unlucky or something?

Also, the reason why you don't see a huge difference between the FX and the XL is because the FX's run Source in DX8.1 mode, since they can't handle DX9 shaders very well. I saw the same thing...I had a modded 5950U and I went to a leadtek 6800GT, and the performance really wasn't THAT much higher--but it's because one was in DX8.1 mode and the other is in DX9 mode.

Your memory overclock on your card is really high.
Are you water cooling it?
I have never seen any XL memory reach 590, that is 100Mhz over the stock speed.
If you are not water cooling the RAM I suggest lowering your RAM speed.

The average XL overclock from my 3DMark05 list is 434/533.

I gained only 2000 points in 3dmark 2001 between a 9800 Pro and my X800 XL. I was like, WTF?!?!?!??!?

Then I did 3dmark 03. Over double the points, way over. 2001 is about meaningless these day for modern cards. 03 is good, I guess 05 is better but I dont have it.

Same here, upgraded from a 9800Pro -> 6600GT -> x800XL and my scored doubled since, and went from about 3,000 with the 6600GT to 5,250 with the x800XL .

sorry for the lack of updates, but have been so busy. Ok that overclock didn't last that long lol. It's not at 430/525 Seems to be stable there for a week now so should be fine. Once I get the Arctic Cooler 5 Rev. 2 (I think is what it's called) I'll OC some more.

Try turning off your VSYNC on ati settings, and set fps_max to 300 in your CS:S config, see how that goes. :)

so what you guys are saying it's more of a CPU issue?

because I just got the x800xl, my cpu is 2.6ghz, now when I max out everytghing on the x800 and max everything out on my games, i seem to being getting low frame rate on some areas on the maps ( call of duty, half life 2) should this be happening? cant the x800 handle it? or is it my cpu?
