I bought an X800 Pro a few weeks after it was introduced. I have never been able to get decent fps out of it. I have done a lot of work to my system and have gotten everything I know about fixed.

I have never been able to exceed 55 FPS average on the CS:S Video Stress Test, regardless of whether I max out the video options or run them at the very bottom (640x480 with almost no options).

My FPS in a quiet peaceful CS:S screen runs about 30 FPS, and goes down to 10 or less during a firefight.

My performance in BF2 is much the same, regardless of the video options that I set.

I realize that this rig is old by current standards, but I am confident that the CPU should not be my bottleneck.

I know people with a 9800 and lesser CPU outperform me by a mile.

What can I do to improve performance?

Several forums have told me that the x800 Pro is garbage. At this stage my son's GF3 outperforms me on some cases in CS:S.

What can I do? Where can I go?

Try disabling v-sync? Reinstall different Catalysts? Have you tried reformatting the computer because there might be some crappy old drivers on the OS? Yes, disabling Fast-writes might do it as well.

The X800 pro is a great card for the money and should max out most modern games with ease, I'm sure you can optimize it a bit to make it perform.
 
One of you says to enable fast write, the other says to disable which should it be?

I vote for reformat. Its the quick way to be sure if you have a bad card or some software conflict. That pro should handle CS very well.

Haha ;). My parents gave me $2000 for keeping a 90 average in high-school and I worked the rest off at my job. All together it came to around $3000 with the LCD and 5.1 speakers. Next upgrade is my CPU (hopefully dual core FX) and Hard Drives (raptors getting a little small). Yours is pretty nice too, I had a Neo2 for awhile, just never fell in love with it.

Also, Fastwrites on can give you a slight performance boost but it's very buggy so if you get any stuttering or freezing you SHOULD turn it off.

Ok, I just uninstalled the Catalyst drivers, and ran the driver clean program. And installed the 5.6, I know the 5.7 is out, but a friend of mine with a 9800 kept getting crash to desktops with BF2.

My CS:S Video Stress Test is abut 54 fps

I turned Fast Write off (after the driver uninstall) it brought my fps down to 52.

I am totally lost as to what could be my bottleneck.

I am about ready to trash this card and go back to NVidia.

What are the rest of the specs on your PC? I'm only asking because your link isn't working for me, so I have no idea what your setup is.

Try 4x AGP and fastwrites OFF. May work, may not. At least you'll rule out your AGP speed and fastwrites.

i never got to see your system specs, link dont work for me, but if yuo have an AMD 64, fastwrites should be ON, i knwo because i have one and my card plain ol doesnt work with it off. try disabling background apps, and check your driver settings, i.e. CCC, or the plain ol control panel, i personally use the omega drivers, and i definately hated CCC took like 20 minutes to load....

last year i was top 50 students out of my 2000 class.....i am not a dork or antyhing.....
my mom gave me $50 for that, i ahd to wrok my ass of at mcodnalds to get my upgrade :mad:

I know how it feels lol, before my A64 system I was crusing in a P3 450mhz for 3 years lol. Oh and thanks, I hate the kids who go buy SLI Alienwares across the street just for fun with daddy's credit card to play Madden 2005 at 800x600 lol.

As for Julian, before you trash the card, at least RMA it to ATi or check it in a friend's system before potentially wasting $400 on an unnecessary video card. Try resetting to factory settings in your BIOS as well, there might be some stupid quirk that throttled performance. Download ATITool, what are your temps like?
 
I still run with FastWrites off, and that is using an X800XT AIW and A64 system.

As noted, turn off VSync and see what happens. If your fps shoot way up, then you need to fix your refresh rate because it is probably at 60Hz.

CS:S still has some heavy CPU requirements, so don't kid yourself about the CPU not mattering. Just as a side note, barring any driver problems, reducing the resolution and in game IQ settings and seeing no change in fps tends to indicate a bottleneck somewhere besides the VC.
 
lol, i see people buy SLI or a single 7800gtx, x800's, x850 and they do not even play games, or do any video editing, they just use their pc for web browsing......

I've owned a 6800GT before my old 2.4GHz socket 754 setup, VS my friend's P4 rig with an X800pro VIVO, oh yeah, he beat me badly in 3dmark05. That was 3 months ago. I'm sorry but don't be an idiot and deny this. Most of all don't get me started. :rolleyes: The X800pro is running for 228 bucks on 'Egg while the cheapest 6800GT AGP is 270 and that is an Apollor Aopen, whatever, can you beat that? The X800pro kicks ass for a 12-piped card, performance wise. :eek:
 
6800gt and x800pro are more or less equal. end of that story.

now, as far as the system goes. turn OFF fastwrite. it does more harm than good. and go through and crank down the resolution and turn off the eyecandy. then work from there. the x800pro is a perfectly fine card who can handle it's own weight. and finally i'd say to go ahead and install the latest drivers.

Do what he said, but you still need to say what kind of computer you have. The link you provided in the first post is invalid. We cannot help much without knowing what Power Supply, CPU, Motherboard, whatever you have. :D
 
modded my pro to xt -- well didn't get the 16 pipes still only SHOW to have 12--but it got a huge boost from the xt bios -- at the resoultions i like to run --i can turn everything on to high --and it just runs games like a champ-- other pro's i have modded to xt --there all but the same card -- i would put mine up against a 6800gt anyday--heck go ahead and overclock the GT !-- -

Check to see that v-sync is also disabled in the driver. I think its called vertical refresh in the control panel or CCC. I have mine set to off unless the application specifies.
 
hey that card should fly, if my little ol Radeon 9500, MP 1.2, and 512 PC2100 can get just over 40 fps in CSS video test then yours should double that. Just guessing. Check your video settings and try try again. Optimize your BIOS settings for memory too, and personally I disable fastwrites for radeon cards, the guy who makes the Omega drivers says it's a waste of time and causes some issues. But to each his own. btw, this radeon is NOT soft modded, just straight cat drivers, not sure what version, maybe a few months old.

Looks like he has a AthlonXP 3200+ on a NF7II with 1.5 gigs running WinXP Home SP2.

The x800 pro is a fine card. Your system is well able to take advanatage of it too. Something else is causing your performance to tank, or you have a bum card and need to RMA it.

Start looking for malware and background processes eating your CPU and RAM. Turn off any background processes you can. Stop downloading pr0n. Make sure your settings aren't too ambitous. Try turning off AA and AF. Make sure that Vsync is disabled. Check both the game and driver settings.

Hell, stick the fucker in your kid's system and see how it does...

I've found that BF2 is very dependent on CPU.

With the rig in my sig, I had it OC'd to 2.1GHz w/ 190FSB...I averaged about 35-37fps
I now run 2.3GHz w/ a 200FSB..I average 45-50fps

of course, in both trials, I have shadows turned off and dynamic lighting set to low. those two settings will wreak havoc on a lesser card.
 
Sorry I lost connection to the internet for a few days, unrelated to this.

I quote my specs here. As far as in game parameters I have set them to as high as they go and also as low as they go (640x480 with everything off). I always have vsync off. Regardless of what the settings are there is only insignificant changes in the fps which indicates to me that there is a bottleneck somewhere.

EDIT> Oh yes, I bought this card a couple of weeks after they became available in the US, but back then I had a much lesser rig and thought the problem was with my rotten rig not with the card. Now I have a decent rig and the problem persists.

I would also check to see that the card isn't overheating, You could be loosing performance because of heat install ATI tool and make sure the temperatures aren't getting out of hand, they should be in the 70-75c range under load. You may want to check that the heatsink is making good contact.

If you are certain that everything is set up correctly, try this guide, I had an x800pro and I found it very helpful when setting it up. I remember getting 90 to 95 fps on that test.

If all else fails, as somebody else already suggested, you may just have a bad card. If it was retail, you should still have a couple of years on the warranty. Have ATI replace it.
 
Dude, I've had a 9800Pro and my XP-M @ 2.3Ghz, and I definitely got much higher than 50FPS on the VST. VST with 9800Pro should easily hit a VST of around 120's (10x7 resolution).

X800Pro's are easily 20-30% faster, even in a CPU-limited game like Source. Honestly, I think I should test this with my 8500 just to prove that something is SERIOUSLY wrong with your x800Pro/your setup.

If worst comes to worst (testing card in a friends computer), then I say format.
