Question is it really worth paying more than a 100.00 for the x800 or is the 9800 pro good enough?

what processor/ how much memory do you have, and what games do you play/intend on playing?

I'll get the 9800 Pro then wait for PCI-E cards to come out. sapphire 9800 pros go for 217 at newegg (just got mine today ;))

What he said, though if you can afford it, getting the X800 now and possibly upgrading later is a good idea. If you have a slow computer though, and dont plan on upgrading soon, id take the 9800 pro

Pegesus, I would just get a 9800 pro or XT and wait for next gen cards. At lese at that time you could save up money to buy the top of th eline the next round oveer.

well here is the thing i am building a new computer and thats why i trying to decide on a vid card. its an amd 64 3200 with a gig a ram pc3500 so im looking to play the newest and most visually taxing games becoming available namely eq2. So i am just wondering how the 9800 pro will hold up

a 9800pro would be a huge bottleneck for that system, if you can afford it, an x800pro or xt would make your system shine.

What he said!

I am having the same problem deciding. I want to upgrade my 9600Pro, and ther are a few nice moded 9800 Pro' s that would do some awesome overclocking, but the though if the X800 is lurking in my mind. I have a Antlon Xp 2500+ and 1GB Corsair XMS PC2700. I want to be able to play games like HL2 and Doom 3 on max or near max settings (res: 1280x1024) at around 30fps. Would a Modded and OCed 9800Pro be enough for that, or would I need like an X800Pro or XT? Also, would the X800 bottleneck because the rest of my system isnt as good as it can be?

If your current card is doing you well I would wait until HL2, or doom3 is released, by then the prices should be lower and you should have a better feel of what card is going to the best match for your processor.

My current card is holding up fine right, the only games I cannot seem to run at playable speeds on max graphics are Far Cry and Halo. Everything else I have tried looks awesome. My onyl problem, I really playing a game at lower settings. I will set every game at max, then fine tune from there till I hit 30fps, i like my games to lood good. By the time I could have the moeny, the new cards probaly would be cheaper, as would the 9800's so I still dont knwo which to get. Also, when I get the moeny, 6800U should be out, but that woudl mean a new PS (my 430W POS case PS works hard enough)...is it worth it to get that and hve PS3.0 support, or get a different card?

At this point...what woudl get me better results. Spending $300-$500 on new video card, or spenging $300-$500 on good AMD64 Processor and motherboard? If I woudl see a bigger perforance jump with the new processor and mobo, ill do that. I just want to do wahterever it takes to run HL2 at max.

The spending of $300-$500 would yield the best results, for if you got the amd64 and paired it with that 9600 you wouldn't notice a difference. I am wondering how much that pc2700 is holding you back. If you could get some 3200 and run in dual channel, that 2500 should be able to hit 3200speeds. Match that with a x800pro and you would be in gaming bliss.

As far as PS3.0 goes, the jury is still out on that one. It looks like that SM4.0 is going to be the big jump for graphics and the jump from the current SM2.0 to SM3.0 that you would do right now would be very little if any on what you would actually see. It's supposed to be a great asset to the programmers though. By the time that SM4.0 is out you would have surely upgraded by then! Good luck.

I say go for the x800Pro, because it will probably suit your needs for at least a year and a half or so.

So the majority rules that spending the xtra 150 on a x800 is the way to go any not getting the 9800 pro you all know my system specs as they are listed in the original post. I am just trying to make sure i am not wasting money right now when new technology comes out in a year from now.
