Hey guy's I'm currently having issues with my x58 system.

Up until today and once it stopped posting I was running the following

i7 920
evga x58 sli
g.skill 1600mhz or corsair dominators
6990+6970
AX1200
vertex 3 240gb

Few months ago
-Getting BSOD's, issues persist with different ram or 1 stick (Never ran memtest, alternated between g skill 1600mhz and some faster corsair dominator ram)

Few weeks ago
-Open up the pc to throw my 6970 back in there (Forgot why I had it out)
-Take the top fin of one stick of the dominator
-No post, no post codes on the mobo (the error readout is blank)
-decide it was the mobo

Today
-pick up a used asus sabertooth x58 board
-No post or anything

So I'm staring to think it's the cpu but I'm not sure. Do the above issues result from a dead cpu? Intel RMA's are pretty pain free. I'm just worried that the sabertooth board is a dud (bought used locally)

Follow the steps in the stickied "Basic TroubleShooting Guide" on what to do when the PC does not POST. Please report back when you've done all those steps.

When you tested the sabertooth, did you only have the essentials plugged in? essentials are listed in the guide Danny is referencing above. Did you properly test any other parts before deciding it was the mobo?

I did everything I could there in no particular order. More on that below

I just finished testing the sabertooth with the i7 proc on my "test bench" that consists of the following

-500GB HD
-4GB stick of 1333mhz mushkin DDR3
-BFG SL-1200
-ASUS 5850

These parts are basically confirmed to be working as I use them for my bitcoin mining rig and I've never had any stability issues (Use a different mobo and proc along with 3 more gpu's )

I tested the EVGA board with the proc in the same test bench previously and it was a no go, same issues as my original post. I hooked up everything using the sabertooth mobo and still nothing. The mobo does have two LED's lit while on. According to the manual they are the DRAM_LED and the CPU_LED. According to the manual they indicate issues with both and stay lit until the issue is fixed.

edit: So just to clarify I get nothing on the monitor. No post sounds with a speaker plugged in. The cpu fan seems to work and the card's fan works. Also, the standby power LED is on.

Probably the CPU then. The i7 920 did have a slightly higher rate of death.

No post error beeps without ram nor gpu installed?
try re-seating cpu?
if none of those work, then I agree, its the CPU.

Think so too

Just removed the RAM and 5850, it won't even turn on. The standby LED is on but once I hit the power button the fan stay still. The DRAM_LED does light up for a brief moment (Half a second) and then it powers off.

So fair to say it's the cpu? Wonder if it's worth paying the $30 or whatever to do an advanced RMA on a basically dead socket.

Nah not worth spending the $30 for the advanced RMA unless you really need the CPU.

For anyone wondering advanced rma was $25 with next day delivery of a brand new 950 and a pre paid shipping label for the dead proc. Pretty good deal since shipping would be over $10 anyway

So...was it a dead CPU after all? Please let us know.

I have a very old system (AMD Socket A) that behaves similarly to what you described above under "Today" (power on = no POST, no fans running, no nothing). I have had several motherboards die, so I assumed it was just that. For all I know, it's really the Athlon XP CPU that died.

place of purchase or Intel direct?

I rma'd through intel directly. I got the cpu the next day. I just finished putting everything back together with the sabertooth mobo and same thing, no post or anything. The standby LED is on, along with the DRAM LED and the CPU LED.

:(

Dunno what the issue could be, and I keep using up all my thermal paste constantly re-seating the cpu.

edit: NVM, forgot to plug in the power for the hot swap bay on my 800D, pc seems to be working fine.

Thanks for the help everyone

Having issues again. I decided to try my old evga board to see if it works and prep it for sale, connect everything up and it gets all kinds of errors on the display. I leave, come back later and try again. This time I get no errors and it starts to smell burn so I turn it off. I put the cpu back in the sabertooth and realize after wrestling with my noctua D14 that one of the screws is broken so I can't use the cooler. I instead connect another cooler and I'm greeted with no post or anything. I hook it up to my test bench and the same thing.

So its either the cpu (again) or both the mobo's? I'm going to pull the cpu and check the pins on the mobo because I saw something that looked like a crumb but ignored it earlier.

So you got it working then decided to mess with it again? :p Computers be finicky lil buggers. Best leave 'em be once you get 'em workin.
