Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P AM3

Ok I've been through about everyone Newegg has and I can't make up my mind. I need something inexpensive (<= 40$ including tax and shipping) and easy to install. Not getting a Cooler Master, my cooler master laptop cooling pad died in five months, so I'm not going to support that brand.

I would really appreciate it if someone with an AM3 setup could tell me what they've used

Someone suggested this one:

but it doesn't state AM3 support - does that matter?

Was gonna recommend the Hyper 212+ but if simple things like that make people change their minds... then nvm :p My buddy runs it on his BE 720 and it gives him superb temps for his 3.8ghz clocks.

I second 1985's choice for the next cooler up.

agreed.

@Casper and why should i support a company whose products have failed me? It's not like Microsoft where you only have one option for O/S, here I can choose to say no.

because theres a huge difference between a 15 dollar laptop cooler and a cpu heatsink.. i go through 3-4 laptop coolers a year.. but its your choice..

didn't realize all laptop coolers are junk. yeah maybe it's unfair to write them off for one bad product

+1 for the Xigmatek S1283. The TIM installation is a little different with the HDT design but they are a great item for the money.

I've been rocking this on my 720 and its been great!

x2 for the Xigmatek - I love mine. Do keep in mind that it is very big and can only mount vertically (so that the fan blows air out the top, not side, of your case). Mine also blocks the first memory slot, which has been annoying from time to time.

Frostytech.com is a good place to find coolers if you haven't already been there.

Also, I have a friend with the vendetta cooler you linked to. It's good too, and will, as sir monkey points out, work fine with am3.

The Xigmatek or the CM Hyper 212 Plus, both look pretty good... I was kinda excited about the CM after I saw that Maximum PC review where they claimed it out-performed the TRUE, but they must've screwed up the mounting or used different fans on 'em or something because every other review I've seen puts the 212 Plus (like the S1283) a few steps behind the TRUE, granted it costs like $20 less too (like the S1283). The Cogage TRUE Spirit actually comes much closer to the TRUE (for $35, see [H]ard's review or the Xbits one I linked before) but it's LGA1336 only AFAIK, kind of a shame.

Also, are you overclocking and/or unlocking your 4th core? If you're oc'ing, how far do you plan to push it? I ask because most of these coolers would be excessive if you aren't oc'ing/unlocking. If that is the case, but you still want an improvement over your stock cooler, you might try one of the stock coolers that come with the 940s/955s etc... They're considerably better coolers and are probably dirt cheap on the fs forum.

actually i'm not sure if i'm going x2 550 or x3 720 yet. depends on my budget. if i go x2 550 i may just use the stock heatsink fan, but if i go x3 720 it's OEM on newegg, so i'd like to get something half-way decent. but that's a good point, i didn't think of trying to get a stock fan from someone on fs.
honestly i may go x2 550, try for the unlock to 4 cores, and keep the stock fan until I can afford the H50 from Corsair. it just looks so freakin cool i want to try it out lol
