X2 - Un-Capped

Who ever used shims? Ive never chipped cracked or smashed an AMD. We had a folding farm with about 10 pcs which were constantly upgraded throughout the socket A days. Hell we OCd the hell out of em in fairly poor ventelated cases and never had one die... plenty of dead mobos (the bad cap days). I think of shims along the line of training wheels or velcro shoes.

I did see a friend chip the corner off a p3 oddly enough. I was watching him put the heatsink on too. Didn't see him do anything wrong... just heard a crunch as it was torqed down. don't think a shim would have saved it.. must have been a very un-flat core.

Has anyone successfully mounted an XP120 onto a naked chip? I'm just wondering if this is for those that have screws and can apply tension or what...

man, i thought it would be near impossible for someone to threadcrap about someone uncapping a processor, but the internet has amazed me once again.

all i can say is you guys are crazy. i MIGHT do my opteron 246s when its time to upgrade to dual cores.

and the more pics + stories the better!

i also think uncapping is worth it EVEN if you just do it for the drop in temp.

So I did it and put a watercooling system in. Now without overclocking, I'm at 80F idle and 104F load. Sweet thanks for the video.

I used a razor blad w/ goof off on it and it was pretty easy. Thanks to everyone that actually contributed in this thread. I'm up to 2640mhz now. Very happy.

is it possible to uncap a pentium 4? I've a spare, and upon closer inspection, the gap between the processor and the ihs is so small I doubt one could get a razor in there.

well, lets just say i shed blood for my computer :) This is an Opteron 170 CCBWE 0543TPMW

Ready for the Storm!
Naked-3.jpg

Results:

Before
2700 1.49vcore loaded at 38C (max 24/7 OC)
It just wouldnt be happy at 2800 no matter what i tried

After:
2800 1.53vcore loaded at 36C (prime testing and running great)

I would say although i scared myself doing it, it was definately worth it...

:D

I heard the TIM is more adhesive than what is used on the AMD processors, and there is a good chance the core would be destroyed when you pried it off. Not sure if this is true.

looks ....sharp budwise ;)

I'm uncapping my 4400+ on tuesday and i'll post the results here.

Right now i'm at 2.5GHz @ 1.4v and 36c<-->44c . (stock air)

I'll be putting a Storm on it with an Iwaki md20z pump and a BIX3...Do i have any chance of over 3.0GHz?

Hands down, most exciting movie of the year! Loved the music!  Now that's the kinda thing that makes me wanna ignore my nephews attempts at "getting the unk to go dirt bikin'/play baseball/nature stuff" and sit on my butt playing with chips!!

Trust the folk you know!

Me 2, after the movie I imediatly shutted down my pc en popped the CPU out of it socket and started to remove the IHS

The music is from Driftwood... I live in holland (the Netherlands) u know the land where u can buy gras/weed legal...and here it made it in the top 40

It is soldered on.

You cannot remove Intel IHS.

Sweet, thanks. BTW I asked this q in another thread, but it's ok to do this with heatsinks like the xp120 and the ninja?

I have a zalman 9500, it weights about 500 grams.
The ninja and the xp120 are a bit heavier 750 grams.

If u wanna be shure that ur core won't get crushed, u can make some kind of support pads.

I have removed 4 IHS's from A64 chips and have done it on both 130Nm and 90Nm. Average gains were about 90Mhz. Two were on air cooling and two on wtarecooling and the results were always around the 90Mhz mark. So I would have to say 3.0 is almost impossible from just removing your IHS.

90 and what temps? I'd think you'd be gettin' lowered temps too, right? Same vcore?

Nice... ^^ someone just unwrapped his Apogee. :)

man, topless is so the only way to go with watercooling.. my machine has been sooooo solid since I did that.. and running at 3ghz with ease. :)

Indeed =)

Did you shim your proc at all with your apogee? I'm going to try using the neoprene pads that came with my chipset cooler.. or atleast i cut the corners off the pads to use.. all that work removing the ihs, would hate to have it come down to weight. although the mounting system for the apogee looks like it won't be much of an issue.

waiting for my arcticlean to arrive tonight to do it right.

so people uncap for a few more degrees and what essentially amounts to a meaningless difference in overclocking? You folks have far too much time on your hands :\

grin.. well it only took about 15min in all to do..

i definitely don't have too much money.. as my web application development project ends this friday and i'm back to teaching high school again this fall =)

i grew up on procs without an ihs, so a naked proc makes me feel more at ease, ha ha.. and of course our gpus are naked in a sense.. nevermind the 80lb hsf attached to them..

Too much time? I think it only takes 10-15 minutes to do :)

I made little supports in the corners with some ultra soft foam rubber bits

I ended trimming these down a little, as they were a little too big at first.. but the overall effect was perfect. The issue I had with the apogee is the plastic spacers for the bottom side of the chrome plate were too tall for a cpu with no IHS, so I ended up using some of the black springs which came with it for the alternate mounting hardware (non s939 parts) which ended up working fine.

just don't torqe it down too hard... you only need a little bit of pressure on the die top to make good contact.. keeping the pressure even is also very important, so the contact is completely "flat". good luck! :)

PS: yes, arcticlean is the shiz!

I uncapped my 4200 and did not use shims. I thought that shims might impair this whole thing since I can screw down my DD waterblock. I don't know if I would have done this little project with a "snap" style HS.

it's not the oftforum bro. :p

Plus - "meaningless difference in overclocking" could not be further from the truth.. uncapping made a huge difference in my overclocking potential.. don't knock it till ya try it.

ok rev, so I started things moving tonight and I see what you mean about the plastic spacers and using the springs. Although I think I might be more comfortable sanding the spacers down to make it work.

I see you're using the DFI, I have the A8NSLI Premium, but this next issue should be the same. My naked cpu chip is just a hair below the plastic ledge part of the socket. As a result my apogee won't sit quite flat. It's barely at an angle but enough to concern me. And the placement of the holes for the mount are such that it must overlap that ledge. Did you run into this at all? Part of me is thinking I shouldn't have taken off the IHS now, might not be worth the potential of my waterblock not making proper contact, certainly not a good tradeoff for the potential gain =)

That's right I did it for the street cred dog. For real, I saw a HUGE difference. My machine has a nice overclock and is quiet as all get out.

shave down the cam.

crap, that's what I was afraid of.. Popping the top I'm ok with, this.. What the hell.

All in the name of 2-3 degree drops.. laugh.

Maybe I'll just try using a razor blade to shave some off.. I don't need much.

^^^ the truely oft.

Poor guy. I wonder if he knows he's soft? He's probably just like most "dumb" people I know. ... they all think they are smart. :)

Is it the same with oft people and [H]ard people?

I might voltmod my pins this weekend to get more juice. Looked neato because my ASUS taps out at a very conservative number, not to hijack.

I've been hoping someone would call me bourgeois because I have a nice computer. How you can say that across the INTERNET is amazing.

I've see that stuff that will generate a chart showing you which pins to short, that's crazy. If I have a border I won't cross, it's shorting the pins on my processor.. I've done my share of soldering and cutting circuits on the top part to unlock processors, but when it goes to the underneath, that's where my line is drawn =)

you are teh .

Just kidding. It is crazy. I have to drink like seven beers before I do it.

lol...

I'm sure being half pissed-up will make things go smoother. :p hahaha

good luck! maybe shoot some video!
