X2 4400+ to E6700?

I recently got a good deal on an E6700 CPU, X1950 Pro and 4 Gigs of Geil DDR2-667 ram as well. Would it be worth upgrading from my current setup of x2 4400 and (at 4800+ speeds) 2Gigs of DDR? I've upgraded from a 6800 Ultra vidcard, so the X1950 Pro is already installed. I'd be getting an Intel bad axe mobo for this setup.

Is it worth the effort switching platforms? Would I notice any increase?
 
I think it would be worth the effort. It is a signficant upgrade in CPU power, but you might not "notice" the difference in everyday Windows applications unless you do a lot of encoding or something drastically CPU intensive. If you encode DVD's or anything like that, it's definitely worth it.
 
I do a lot of encoding and transcoding of DVD's and video files, so this upgrade looks to be a good idea.

Well, using DVD Shrink, I used to get maybe 35-45 minutes with my old 2.6Ghz Opty 165 setup. Now I get 20-30 minutes with my E6600@3.2Ghz. I guess you can decide if you think it's worth it.

Using Nero vision, a single-pass AVI -> DVD encode would take overnight (8-10 hours) for a 2 hour movie on my old P4 2.5Ghz Prescott.

On my 3.2Ghz C2D I can do a one-pass AVI -> DVD encode in FASTER than real time!!! I'm talking about 1 hour for a 2 hour movie.

It would take 2:30 mins off your transcode time with shrink. Is hundreds of dollars worth 2:30 mins to you?

It was when folks went from expensive FX-55 to Expensive X2's LOL! It is now as well:)

Go for it, it wouldn't matter if you were at 5200+ speeds C2D@2.6GHz would still be faster LOL!

What, in one test LOL! What's this selective reading?

The chart doesn't show my Processor at 3GHz does it? Simple and plain, an E6700 is a very worthy upgrade over any current AMD processor at any speed, not just the one mentioned.

What does 3Ghz mean? :D

P4 were higher than 3ghz and they lowered it with C2D because it's a more effective chip. Higher numbers don't always mean better performance. For an intel owner it would be nice to know it's history.

LOL! Look at my specs? Do you have sigs turned on? I said they don't have my Processor on that Tom's hardware list or E6600@3GHz chews up and spits out my Bud's FX-62@3GHz and spits it out:) He was so impressed with the Ass-Whippin' he bought a X6800 and has it at a very sweet water cooled 3.7+GHz. Since Sept-06 the AMDroid as he calls himself BTW, says he's waiting until 2008 to upgrade again.

One other thing of note, you'll also notice better performance from you memory. C2D is less dependent on it and has no problem with getting slower when four slots are used.
 
Just get a E4300 and oc it to 3.58 Then you can kill an X6800 for $175.

The point is that you don't have to overclock an E6600 for it to kill, crush or slam a 4400+ that's more in the class of the 6300 or 6400. I just brought up the chart because they didn't list mine at 3GHz:D
 
Bought the Bad Axe 2 mobo from Microcenter today, gonna set up up tomorrow and re-install Vista as well. Prolly gonna OC the chip to at least 3Ghz.

The mobo seems awesome, BTW.
 
Got the mobo and CPU up and running this past weekend after a dead vidcard, the boost is definitely noticeable!

Just read the reviews for the X2-6000+, and it's about the same speed of the E6600 and only overclocks to 3.2Ghz. Just OC'd my E6700 to 3Ghz and it's smokin fast!.
 
I upgraded from a A8N32SLI and 4400+ to a E6700 and a gigabyte 965P-DS3... mainly because I got the mobo and cpu for free, but even if I didn't I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 6600 and a mobo for the speed increase.
It is well worth it, especially since I hit a 3.5ghz overclock on my 6700

Same here, got the CPU and RAM from a buddy who went all out and got quad core and 8Gigs of RAM. I really didn't want to re-install Vista, but my machine has never been this fast, plus a new install is always so fresh and so clean. :)

I wonder what kind of OC I can get on air?

Many times you can get away with not reinstalling everything with WinXP. You will get a small performance boost whenever you do re-install though. Not just for the Processor but also I/O and other factors. But if you're happy, LEAVE IT ALONE:)
