I plan on purchasing one of these chips. I will pair it with a 8800GTS and 2GB DDR2 800. I plan on overclocking as well. My questions:

1) Which one is better? (cost vs performance)
2) Will either chip bottleneck the 8800 GTS?

Remember the e4300 is about $50 more. I also hear AMD motherboards are less expensive.

All replies/suggestions greatly appreciated.

I got the Biostar TForce 550 x2 3600 combo on newegg, and it is an awesome deal.

I hit 3.0GHz easily on air.

if you can spare the $50, get the allendale. It'll be better clock for clock. For a budget build, though, it's kind of a coin flip. That extra $50 could be put towards a better graphics card, for instance. What resolution you game at?

get the x2 3600.. If you overclock it to 3ghz it will be far better than an e4300.. It would be like between e6600 and e6700

That's a tough call. I've used both and they are both good CPU's. I give the nod to the E4300 at this point unless you're really on a budget.

Thanks for all the input. I have decided to go ahead and get the e4300. Now I have another question... between the e4300, e4400, e6320, and e6420 which chip will give me the best overclock? I know the e6320 and e6420 have 4mb cache so I was just curious if this really makes a difference?

Thanks

Uhh.... I got my friend's E4300 up to 3.33GHz in a matter of minutes. Stable as a rock. Also picked myself up an E4300 with a cheapo ECS mobo for $99. Beat that AMD. Can't wait for Barcelona though.

I'd get the e4300. It's the cheapest of the bunch, and can be oc'ed VERY well. Just remember to get good cooling. I'm a fan of the Tuniq Tower 120 myself.

it's not the cheapest if he need to get a good cooling with it

i say the 3600+, i went from a 3.1ghz opty to a e4300 at 3ghz and i couldn't tell much of a difference in gaming, so i am going back to amd myself so i can get a better mobo(lanparty 590sli) and i still saved a hundred dallors after i sold all my intel stuff and bought a mobo cpu and ram
this processor is the best value i have ever seen in my life, newegg has a combo with it with this ram, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208283, so you can get 2x1GB of pc2 6400 and a processor for $120!!

Wait for the E4300 + Motherboard for $99 deal to come back and take it away to 3.2GHz. No way a 3600+ can top that.

I never owned an Intel system until now. I just upgraded my x2 3800+ (OC 2400MHZ) to E4300 + GA-965p-ds3(V1.3)+2GB DDR2 800 A-DATA from NE for $300. I got PCIe X850XT Platinum from Microcenter for $99.
I OC this one to 330MHZ x 9 without any problem. I can't see much performance improvement in real life like ripping DVD and video software like DVDlab & Pinnacle studio 9. A little bit better. The only thing I can see is SuperPI 1M=20 sec compared to my x2 was 30sec, but what does this test prove? I think everything is hyped up with the Intel. I tried Intel because my sis liked my x2 setup and her old AMD system was old XP1800+, so I gave it to her and since DDR2, Motherboard & E4300 are much cheaper now.
Get good motherboard and rams.
This will be my HTPC also with HDTV, HD audio.
I think in real life, it doesn't matter what you choose, whatever fits your needs, both of the CPU are good. Intel based motherboards don't support many IDEs or IEEE1394.
Performance wise, Intel beats AMD in special tests like SuperPI and stuffs, but for normal use, I think it's the same or a little better.

Example SuperPI 1M=20sec vs 1M=30Sec that's 1/3 better.

DVDshrink ripping 7.4GB to 4.3GB from Hard drive E4300=4minutes & X2 3800 = 5minutes
DVDlab compile 7.4GB movies with menu E4300 = 19 minutes & X2 3800 = 22minutes

If the costs of the 2 setups are different more than 30%, I wouldn't get Intel E4300 or any other conroe cpu.

I looked at AMD x2 xxx 65w and the cost for a good motherboard and CPU are close to $200 ~ E4300+GA965p-ds3 = $214.00@NE the difference are small, that's why I tried E4300.

I looked at Frys sale stuffs, always with some cheap ECS motherboards and OEM CPU which cost you $30 more to get the CPU fan.

Since DDR2 prices are dropping, this is the best time to get a new system. Last year, you can't even touch any Intel or AMD system for less than $2k. Competition did help.

Cheers,

maybe it can't, idk but it is still fast, i can do everything the e4300 can do with a little more time, the that is saved buying the 3600+ could be put toward other components in the system(vid card, case, psu, ect)

So how much money do you save? I got my E4300 for $99, Gigabyte DS3 mobo is $99, ram is $125. Throw in another $50 for a good cooling unit, and you got yourself one of the best performing systems on the block.

PS: The DS3 mobo is one of the best OC'ers and that's good G.Skill ram.

you would save around $155

I'm sure when you choose those inferior components, you can save a lot. You're comparing that BIOSTAR mobo to one of the best LGA775 boards available. Also, when I say $125 for ram, I mean you get good G.Skill ram for overclocking. If you don't want to overclock, I got my E4300+ECS mobo for $99. And with that bundle you can reuse DDR1 or upgrade to DDR2.

PS: The E4300 is retail as well, so you don't need to buy a heatsink.

biostar tforce motherboards are high quality and oc good, that ram overclocks good, those components look crappy, but are not, components don't have to cost a lot to oc good, you just have to know what you looking for:D

i had a tforce p965 and it did 470fsb just like my asus p5b plus did for a third of the price

I can guarantee you that those components won't OC to the same levels as the components I listed. I'm not against AMD (heck, I used an Athlon XP/nForce 2 combo for my main system up until a few days ago). I just don't see the point of buying it right now when you can have something much better for a few bucks more. When Barcelona comes out, then it will be a different story (I hope).

the reason i used that review is because the cpu's are clocked high(well not that high), fx-62 2.8ghz, e6700-2.6, x6800 2.9

An overclocked E4300 can beat all those CPUs. It's also very easy to do with the DS3+E4300+air cooling. Raise voltage a slight bit, and raise FSB. It took me 10 minutes max. If you're an AMD fan (and I have nothing against them) then obviously get an AMD system, but if you just want the best performing CPU then get the E4300. If AMD had the better processor today (like the Athlon XP&64 vs. Netburst abomination that was P4), then I'd be campaigning them, but they don't.

i am not an amd fan or intel, i am a best bang for the buck fan, i just don't think that the e4300 is worth the extra $155 than the 3600+, i maybe be a couple of min faster in encoding something, i may get some really good super pi score, but in games there is a very little difference and that is what the op looks like he wants to use this system for, he could use that extra $150 to get a HD 2900xt which seems to get better preformance every driver release

Right... not an AMD fan, yet you campaign the HD 2900XT. Whatever, I stated my point. See you around.

i know it looks like that, but i am not, the hd 2900xt is starting to whip up on the 8800gtx and its cheaper thats why i said that, i have never owned a ati card i my entire life, i have always had nvidia(mx4000, 6800gs,8800gts)

Easy enough to get a cheap E4300 system.............
MSI P6N SLi-Fi MoBo + E4300 and some basic Corsair ram and you're good to go..........
The stock cooling is more than enough to cool a mild OC of 333x9 (3.0 gig) at stock voltages, so there's no need for anything top end unless you want to push the CPU harder.
E4300, $114.50
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115013

MSI P6N SLI-Fi. $109.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130082

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) (PC2 5400). $74.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145015

All these will do a easy 8x400 (3.2) with a mild voltage bump to 1.375, which stock cooling will handle.

On a budget x2 3600 all day long.. You can have the mb/proc/2gb of memory/better than stock cooler with that deal for less than 225 shipped, and it will do well.

You will have better performance with the 4300, or bit more money if both overclocked the 4300 will beat up on the 3600..

But it's likely you won't notice any real difference anywhere.. it's purely a numbers game.. so if you feel like its worth the extra money to know your computer could conceivably do more in a benchmark (ie. if your technically minded), then get the 4300 :)

I opted for the x2 3600, simply because I didn't want to spend much money.. I just keep it steady at 2.5-2.7 ghz depending upon mood, but it will go to 3ghz, but gets a little warmer than i'd like.. I have an aftermarket fan on the way gonna test it out. Purely a numbers game though, as i can't tell any difference in performance at any of the clock speeds.

Peace,
Josh

$50 extra for what? the chance to brag you got a fewer more seconds in some PI calculation bullshi*? Or to look at a 3dmark 06 cpu score thats a little higher.

How about shaving twenty minutes off every H.264 conversion I just queued up?

If your going to buy a new mb, cpu, and ram it might as well be pci-e, ddr2, and upgradeable to a quad core easily.

The amd will work, but thats all its going to do. I would rather have a more powerful cpu and more upgradeability then the amd system.

I dont have a preference to either except that right now intel is kicking ass.
