x1950pro overclocking with ATI tool

Ok, so I have the Cat7.9 drivers on Windows XP 32bit running on the rig in my sig. When I try to overclock in ATI tool, and hit "set clock" it just resets the clock back to the stock settings. Any ideas what's going on here? Is there any real boost I can see with overclocking this card?

edit - also, temps @ stock are about 78*C under while running stress test and when I try to find max core, the screen just goes black and then nothing happens, wtf?

Is this AGP? Cause I don't believe that AGP overclocks too well. I believe I had the same thing happen to me when I tried to oc mine.

Your card might be over heating, 78C is pretty hot...

I have a PCIe version of the card amd max settings for a HIS ICEQ 512MB card is 621core and 850 ram.


have you tried completely removing all traces of the driver and reinstalling it?

I use ATT and overclocking works fine. 7.9 with hotfix.

And yes 78c is hot but those are the normal temps of the POS stock cooler, I replaced mine with a X2 now it never breaks 52c full load.

The card is PCIe and I recently clean my drivers w/ driver cleaner and reinstalled just the driver. Do I need to have CCC installed to overclock? It was giving me a lot of issues before so I didn't install it after cleaning.

The highest temp my 1950 pro has gotten is 61C with the stock cooler, and that was in World in Conflict...

You don't need CCC to overclock. I don't have it installed!

Well, I uninstaller the 7.9 drivers, rebooted into safe mode, ran driver cleaner, rebooted again and installed the Cat7.8 drivers. Now if I try to stress test using ATItool the "fuzzy box" is completely artifacted and my computer locks up. However, DOD:Source runs fine, max settings, good frame rates, no artifacts. Anyone know WTF is going on here?

Also make sure your not trying to save the overclock settings to the Default profile pulldown. You need to create a new profile and save the setting to it, then make it the profile to load at atartup. I had this similure problem with saving custom fan settings. ATITool likes to preserve the default profile and wont let you make changes to it, but it wont tell you this with an error message or anything.

You will also want to kick up your fan settings. Adding about 10% to each step wont effect sound much but will help keep it a little cooler.

If you read the post above yours, you'll see that I installed the cat 7.8 drivers and now the problem is exacerbated. Simply running a stress test in ATItool will crash the computer.
