x1950pro or 7900gs

Yeah. But then again, for the prices those upper end 939 cpus are going for, I might as well switch out to low end Conroes anyway.

I thought 3Dmark06 would be more affected by dual core. Then again, the games I play (HL2 engine based) are currently all single threaded anyway.

The card that you are looking at is a Crossfire Edition X1950 with 16 pipelines. Crossfire cards are built off of fully functioning cores of their generation, the "Pro" is a typo.

This is a discussion for the ages. Similar to the apple vs. windows, or intel vs. amd. There really is no winner, but sometimes it's fun to argue the point and in the end everyone learns a whole lot more about video cards than they really ever thought they would.

x1950 Pro = folding@home monster (x1950XT is slightly better of course, but at a $$$). If you aren't contributing to F@H yet, you should think about it.

I hate folding but I leave it on sometimes... All it does is drain my power and make my system hot all the time...

So who's the real winner? I think at stock performance 1950pro wins and have better AF to boot... 7900gs is cheaper and might overclock better and trade blows with 1950pro...

I think the real winner is who ever buys it cheaper than the going price...

You guys do realize I bought a x1950pro over a week ago making this topic moot.

Its a fun topic to discuss. Any time two companies build fairly comperable products that can be easily modified, there is a lot of fun debate. Since the GS and Pro are in the "sweet spot" that most all gamers can afford, it makes it relevant to a lot of folks.

I haven't been able to compete a full GPU unit partially due to 6.12 drivers not working with it and random errors when starting the client.

another question, is it posible to run a GPU client while running the cpu version? since when i turn off the cpu client the GPU version shoots up to 100% cpu load.

Topics over, sorry can't help you.

You'd probably be better of asking at the FAH forums, but last I remember, the GPU does more and requires a significant amount of CPU, so if you run both, both clients slow down considerably. I think it's enough that it's worth it to keep just GPU only unless you have multiple cores/CPUs.

With a single core just run the GPU client. With dual you can run one CPU and one GPU--that's how my C2D rig is running and the CPU usage is 100%. My x1900xt does not even heat up.

I'm thinking of getting a x1900gt or x1950pro for my Opteron 165 rig.

X1950Pro is the better card. Obviously more expensive though. X1900GT's can be had for under $150 at newegg.

And the x1950 Pro is quiet compared to the GT. If it's an ATI manufactured card, then there's also VIVO, which I find extremely handy.
