Just took off my factory heat sink and noticed the thermal pads on the ram do not make good contact. I'm going to put some artic silver on the gpu but can you also put some on the ram. Thaks for the help.
 
Guess no one has ever done this or no one is saying the have. I put AS5 on my ram along with the thermal pads. Works like a champ. :D
 
I'm a little late, but yes it will work. :D I had to put separate heat sinks on the RAM for my 9800Pro 256MB card. Sounds like your cooling solution overlaps all the stuff.
 
Thanks for the reply Skaarjmaster. Yes the heatsink covers everything. Figured I could put AS5 on the ram but wasn't really sure if it was a good idea. Thanks again
 
Don't use AS5 with the pads you could get an insulation effects. Scrap off the pads. Sand down the surfaces with some very fine paper 600grit or higher then hit it with a dab of AS5

I remember a discussion on AS5 a while back, some were pretty adamant about not using AS5 on videocards as it's a conductive compound and may short the card. I think AS3 was recommended? Regardless, I used AS5 and my Arctic Cooler 5 on my old X800XL, worked fine.. I'm just wondering if there was any factual information to back up the aforementioned danger of using AS5 on videocards.
 
AS5 is not conductive but slightly capacitive. So in theory it could cause some problems but not short anything out. This is the information I have gathered from the forums over time. So hopefully the info I read about AS5 is correct from mulitple forums. I did put AS5 on the GPU and RAM. I did not take the thermal pads off and put the AS5 on the pads. If I take the pads off there will be a big space between the ram and heatsink and no way to fill it. The thermal pads also look like insulators and not heat sucking devices. They have little quilted pattern on them, that sits on the ram. Not sure though.
 
Are you re-using the stock Heatsink? From what I gathered you removed the stock heatsink and are applying AS to it and then reinstalling it.

If that is the case, you might want to consider getting a Arctic Cooler Accelero X2 from Newegg.com for about $23+$5 shipping. The difference between the two coolers is pretty impressive. The reason why I mention this is because I used some thermal goop on my X1900 XTX's memory chips before installing the thermal pads that came with the Accelero X2. I have read more then once where people have damaged or almost damaged there cards when removing the cooler. To prevent this problem, I smeared a slight amount of goop on my memory chips and then put the pads onto it. I don't care how strong they stick to the cooler, I just want my memory chips intact if I ever remove the AC X2.
 
Yep stock HS and it came vey easily. I think some of the thermal pads weren't even touching the ram chips. I like the accelero but not that it exhausts back into the case. Got a point though, for $30 it's not a bad deal. I just may get one and give it a try. I really like the stock HS and how it exhausts out of the case.
 
I use AS3 on my videocard as opposed to AS5 but that's really because I still have so much AS3 left over. Man that little tube lasted years

Then you are doing something wrong... Try upgrading more frequently :D !

Also, buy a GAZILLION HeatSinks! Chicks love 'em! Put AS on your new NB HS (SB if you have one)! On your Video Card, it's a must (kinda like ketchup and Burgers...). Stick with me kid, in no time at all, that tube will be gone, and so will your savings...

Back on topic... Even though I liked the way the stock cooler exhausted air from my case (just like you), I still LOVE the AC X2. It cools SO much better! I do have good airflow in my case, so perhaps the heat being put back in didn't bother me too much. Being able to run the fan @ %100 all the time is GREAT (there is a tab in ATI Tray tools that allows you to change the 'program' for the fan speed). I run it @ %100 and I don't even reach 82 degrees when gaming for 2+ hours. I used to get into the 90s.
 
At 100% fan speed I also never go over 80C after playing hours of BF2 with the AS5 applied. Before it would easily hit over 90C. I still like the accelero though.

I know what the stock fan sounds like at %100, I also know that this one is SOO Quiet. Try it, you will love it!
 
AS5 is fine as long as you dont get it on the PCB... Only the core and the tops of the memory chips should be touched with AS5...

Missed it by 12 hours, but yes what Budwise said is exactly what I was going to add right now continuing to read this thread. Also, I would recommend the Arctic Cooler if you have the $, but if what you have now is working and you have no problems in games that can be explained by heat problems then just keep what you have. :cool:
