I've had my X1800XT on pre-order for weeks now and have yet to recieve it (i'm in the UK and we always get stuff last). Now i hear that the R580 is supposedly coming out in the next couple of months.

I'm seriously considering cancelling my XT and buying a cheap X1300 to get my new system at least running to tide me over till the R580. What do you guys think?

Heh... This is actually exactly what I did back in September 2004. The X800 was coming to the end of it's life, so I decided to wait for next generation (The R520 was slated for release in June (?) 2005). So I bought a cheapo X300 which was supposed to hold me for a little over half a year. Been waiting for the X1800XT ever since.

since the R520 was a brand new core and their PCB layout was completely different then what they generally have been doing, the R520 ran into problems (not gpu related, i think douglight knows more about the actual reason it was delayed)

after that was ironed out i don't see anything keeping the R580 from being released on time

Dont bother playing the waiting game with ati, if i were you i'd get the x1800xt and either sell it when the r580 comes out in 2 months(HA!) and upgrade or just enjoy it. Theres lots of good games right now and being stuck on a x1300 will suck.

they said they had a problem with the IP, and thats the reason it took so long for the R520 to come out. But they said the R580 will be ontime in January. (pretty sure thats what they said.... might be wrong)

I honestly do believe the card will be out on more a less time.
ATI have been held back this cycle by the reasons mentioned as well as teh XBOX 360.
That combined with the fact that they got smacked about by Nvidia this round, all indicate that they are not going to let themselves down again in that way.
Also if i recall right the next card will have aspects they have used in XBOX 360 in it, so thats already been 'learnt'.

So unless you want to be in a position of "ah crap I want that card now" in 3 months time, id wait. But if your kewl with that i.e. dont give a toss in 3 months time or are quite happy to up[grade again in 3 months times (or so), then go for it.
Theres no clear cut answer on thigns like this, but you can try and ascertain whats likely from what has happened etc (as above).

ps I feel ya pain on the UK front, we get things last and then inflated prices to boot. Sucks!

If your ATi just wait for the R580... or if your sick of waiting grab a 512 GTX.

I wouldn't hate on one company just because a particular product isn't widely available.

ATi always puts out quality products.

Wel i've just cancelled my order. I'll pick up a 1300 on monday. Dont want my lovely new system sitting around idly for the next couple of months.
The 1300 is a similar speed to my trusty old 9800pro so i can hold out till the R580 comes out.

Whats the point of having using an old Athlon XP 2800+ with 1 gig CL3 ram and a 9800pro, when i could be using my shiny new X2 4800+ and 2 gig CL2ram instead.

Just wish i could have used this 9800 and saved a few ££.

I've been hearing the R580 were suppose to be a refreash of the R520 tap'd out now for and didn't have any problems the R520 had, but since ATI was so late with the R520 they decided to wait, leaving them time to improve yeilds and drivers of the R580. So, I also believe the R580 will be out on time (End of JAN?). Anyway the R520 is a good card, buy it if you want. If the R580 comes out on time and is a lot faster you can always sell your R520 and get the R580. This way you won't have to use a crappy card waiting for the R580 to come out. Won't matter if the R580 is ontime or late :).

I say wait until like the end of February and if there's no R580 yet then get the X1800XT. For now just get a 6600GT.

People should learn from past mistakes, yet it takes ATI a while to learn from those. Crossfire is still not readly available in the X1800 series Have you not read Kyle's post on the express200 shipset?? ATI is having some major issues with getting products out the door. This is their main focus. Do you people really believe after "just" releasing the X1800XT 15 days ago, they are gonna go ahead of all their marketing for this series of cards and release a new one 2 months from now?? LOL!! That is laughable at best!

Look how long it took to get the X800 series out to market for everyone to buy. It was 6 months after initial release of the X800 they got the X850 out the door. Your precious R580 will be a late March or April release at best. Followed 6 months later with the R600 series of GPU's and Unified Architecture.

Also to note: The Xbox 360's GPU was designed, NOT BUILT by ATI. Microsoft is behind the actual building or who builds it. The DESIGN is what ATI had in it. So production of that chip has nothing to do with ATI's backups on their own GPU's. Motherboard stability issues and production issues with the X1800 series is THEIR problems now.

Just an FYI as it seems alot of mis-informed crap is being spouted. Trust me, I like ATI and am using an X800Pro now. Been waiting for the XT to come out to build a new system. But the numbers just are not adding up and for the first for my own computer, nvidia may be in it.

I doubt you're gonna have to wait long for the 580 ... they're probably working days and nights to fill out that gap .. they messed up .. fixed it and will be releasing it on time or early.

The x850 was out on time .. this will too ..

The thing with crossfire is, is that ati are trying to both release a multi-gpu system with a great motherboard chipset alongside it.

I would wait for R580...the X1800XT isn't quite as fast as I expected and I'm thinking R580 will be worth the wait.

You're going to have to remember that the r580 is most likely going to be faster meaning the video card will be more than $600. Are you willing to wait and spend more is now the question.

The problem is there is always something out in a few months that will be faster...so get what you can get now. If what comes out latter is that much better you can always find a new home for "old" card and get the new stuff..

I agree that ATI got their 90mm working properly so R580 should not be delayed. But I hardly doubght they will release it in 2 months.

Recent article posted here last week noted that R580 was going to be out Feb 06 and the last of the x1800 would stop production in Dec 05......waiting might be ok if ATI puts out a hard launch.....but that could be pushing the envelope???? ;)

Why the hell would ATI stop producing x1800 in december. Today is november 22, x1800 was just released, some places like Europe do not even have it yet/. After spending that much time and money on that chip, I gardly doubght they will stop production by december.

Well go read the article..................... It was pretty convincing. :D
just because ATI just put the card out doesnt mean they are married to it.
dont have a stroke.
gardly???? is that like gargle??? except with something that tastes bad????

They aren't goign to stop production on the r520 that soon.
If anything they might kill the 420 (x800 series)

I saw the article, trust me they won't. As I said before they have invesed too much time and money to stop making the product in 1 month, plus the demand is huge, specially in Europe, i don't think they got any yet. If ATi stops making r520 in december that means they have only supplied NA custumer (not all of them still), that will piss lots of people off, plus ATi will not make much profit from their new technology. R520 is way too hot to stop makng it now, I think almoust anybody can figure that out, do not think of ATI as morons, they ave always sutisfied their custumers, me.

ATI must have lost or misplaced your phone number. If their next product will eclipse the current technology, sell better and place ATI ahead of nVIDIA, Im sure they will not care one rat's butt about the current card. Its all about the money.

Look at what nVIDIA did with the 6800 Ultra....its gone; and only about 1 year of sales. The 520 will be like the x850 crossfire....a flash.

im all for them getting back on their normal release dates, if anything it'll help them keep on the same cycle as nvidia, which is nice to be able to see both cards are generally the same time, and make a decision then
