X-Fi for mp3?

Right so i have some Sennheisser HD555 here and I know they are pretty decent headphones so I was wondering if an X-Fi would really enhance the quality of my mp3 music.

Some people have told me that it would be a waste of money since people only get sound cards because they have 5.1 systems (remember i only have those HD555), but I'd like to know what the experts think.

Thanks in advance

I went from Audigy2 to X-Fi and I found that using the Crystalizer function of the X-Fi did improve the sound quality of MP3's. It's especially noticeable when using headphones.

The Crystallizer seems to enhance the brightness of the sound, while giving a little bit of a gutsy mid bass feel. This is on MP3's and every iother source. Probably what senn's need, but too bright on my MDR-V6

But...it does make my mod'd creative speakers sound better, almost as good as real speakers but not quite there completely.

As always, if you like it...use it, if not, turn it off. The rest of the card is pretty good, especially the 3D Surround Headphone mode, which is almost amazing but not as good as a true surround speaker system (damn close though, and magnitudes better than multispeaker surround headophone junk)

I am no expert but I like my setup. You will love an X-Fi paired with the HD555. I use the full size plug, not sure using with the smaller adapter. All my mp3's sound outstanding. Was worth every penny for me!

For me the crystalizer distorts the hell out of my mp3's, but made my DVD's sound a lot better, with cymbal and high hat hits noticably standing out.

crystallizer is good if you have poorly recorded mp3's. I guess it fool's you into thinking they sound better than they really do... but it was awful on my recordings from vinyl. the distortion I noticed on my monitors and cans made me want to kill a kitten. heh

I just tested the Crystalizer on/off and I don't hear any distortion. Are you guys using the equalizer too maybe? Or perhaps your volume setting is too high.

what are you using for speakers?

I use the crystallizer on mine, and it improved the quality of all my MP3's from 128 to 320 bitrate. Also, I notice a slight improvement on my lossless, ape and flac, format.

I use Senn 595 headphone, and CMSS-3D is also active on XFi.

Currently using Monsoon Planar9 but I also have a set of Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 and have used those with the X-Fi too.
