X-COM didn’t change the world.
In fact, even if you were a gamer through the early 90's, its possible
the game flew under your radar.
However this science fiction strategy title quickly developed a cult
following and is widely considered one of the best turn-based strategy tittles
of its era. With 2K Games' upcoming series reboot, this is the perfect
time to look back at this innovative game that almost didn't see
the light of day.

Julian Gollop Born in Ludhiana, India was the grand creator of X-COM.
He grew a passion for board games and he saw computers as a huge potential
for making board games that had artificial intelligence. Gallop couldn’t receive
any type of formalized computer programming training since it didn’t exist in the 80's.
He purchased a book on assembly language and was essentially his only source
of reference. He first programmed a game called "Laser Squad". Which is basically
the turned bases soldier vs alien part of the game. He managed to incorporate
destructible environments, hidden line of sight and the opportunity to fire. Laser Squad
was so successful that he decided to start working on his sequel and his brother Nick
Gollop helped port Laser Squad to the Commodore 64. They didn’t realize but the result of
their labor would leave an undeniable mark on the industry.

Microprose-UK gave them the deal and 4 people started working on X-COM.
Julian and his brother Nick did all the programming and a few artists
rotated through the project and near the end a sound designer added all the
effects, but Julian estimates that only about 4 people worked on the project at a time.
The original design was going to incorporate these suited government agents that would
be featured in the game as members of X-COM. Players could base these characters
in a city and collect information about alien activity (like spies) unfortunately Micropose
had julian remove them since they were doing their own game based on men in black.
Whatever that game was never saw the light of day.
No one really remembers how the name came to be, but it’s likely a shortened
version of Extraterrestrial Combat Unit. X-COM was nearly 3 years in production and
about 3 months before it was finished Micropose-UK was purchased by Spectrum
Holobyte and they were interested in Micropose-UK for its simulation games.
The only reason Spectrum Holobyte didn’t kick the project was because their own testers
petitioned for the game to release. X-COM released in 1994 for the PC and the PSone
the following year. It had strong sales in Europe , but it was amazing that it sold
well in the US. They rushed Terror from the Deep and then in 1997 they released
3rd version X-COM Apocalypse.

It’s amazing how close we came to never seeing this game.
I still remember Summer of 1996 , I walked into K-B toys and
walked to the bargain bin and pulled out X-COM
looked at it and it didn’t look interesting , but it was on sale for
like 10 bucks. I purchased the game and my life has never been the same.
I have been hoping for a remake ( a good remake ) since I finished playing
Terror from the Deep. Only to have to play Apocalypse and another really bad version.

One of the 1st things 2K Marlin did before production on the remake was to get their entire
staff and had them all play the Original X-COM for like a month I believe. The hardest part
was getting the staff to learn how to play the game since it does have a huge learning
curve, but once the staff got the hang of it what they found most amazing was that after
they finished testing the original a lot of the staff kept playing the game at home
and it helped them get more involved into the game since they saw 1st hand how this
little game could suck you in and never let you go.

X-COM is for the hardcore since it does not allow you any room for error. This game is so
cut throat that It pushes people away and you have to be smarter and more hardcore
than the enemy to lead a successful Xcom squad. This game is not for the weak!
This is the reason the remake will have 2 game types "Original" which will include
perma death and a new version were your soldier will only get injured and you will only
lose them if you abandon the mission.

Jullian and Nick Gallop still design strategy titles, They recently release
Ghost Recon : Future Soldier for the 3Ds, which was not only a solid turn based
strategy title, but ended up being one of the 3Ds' best launch game.

2K you have alot of living up to do, and only 4 people worked on this master piece!

They better bring back the Blaster Launcher.

Nothing like guiding a low yield nuclear warhead through a door, up a set of stairs, down the hall, and into a bedroom thus taking out the entire house. Oh yes.

I hopeful for the new game.
Ghost Recon : Future Soldier was definitely a good turn based game. It just lacks a little depth as its on a mobile platform.

That gun was amazing!

I loved the Perma Death.
I remember naming my soldiers and getting attached to them and then
out of no where they were dead. Saving the game before every move was
essential but sometimes you had to secrifice a soldier or 2.

The guided mini nuke was alot of fun later in the game.
I can't remember the name of the purple caped men that took
like 2 nukes to kill. They were tuff!

The new game will included different classes of soldiers
and each class will have a special move and special
weapon. Armor and items can be used by anyone.

The Air intersection of alien ships will be like a mini
game they are saying which is still under develpment.
I also hope they bring back destructible alien ships.
When you would shoot them down depending on the
weapons you used on your attack ships you can take
off big chuncks of the alien aircraft.

Has anyone here given Xenonauts a try? I've been really looking forward to the new X-Com remake and I'm wondering if I should try Xenonauts to tide me over until release.

I never heard of it, the only remake I played that still lacked depth was UFO extraterrestrials.
released in 2007 I belive.

Im going to look into Xenonauts!

Here's a link to their site, for convenience. Looks good, I'm tempted to grab it :)

Any word on the new X-Com remake release date? I can't seem to find anything other than 2012 online, which presumably means "not for a while."

Thanks for the backstory, I didn't know much about the laser squad game.

X-Com is one of my all-time favorite games. I remember reading about it in a computer mag and knowing it would be a day-1 purchase. I knew that game was going to rock just from the previews and the pics.

I have no idea how many hours I've dumped into playing it, along with TFTD and to a much lesser degree Apocalypse. I recently put another 40-50 hours into the original when it was a decent price on Steam.

I'm cautiously optimistic that one of the new games won't suck, but they definitely have some big shoes to fill.

Cool write up. I remember digging through a box of computer games at Costco and just happened to pull out that gem of a game not knowing better. Also fun to think back that while my boxed copy was called X-Com the one that came in a Microprose pack was called UFO Enemy Unknown. Also while the load times sucked the Playstation version did have some sweet graphics!

Wow this game looks legit. Alot of the X-com look alike have been cancelled since 2K
purchased the license. Xenonauts lookes like it can get away with it since it includeds
modern times soldier and machines or else it would break the license and be sued by
2K.

This is the only X-COM remake I was able to get enjoyment out of.
http://ufo.ufo-extraterrestrials.com/
The Bad thing about this remake is that it only allows you to station soldiers/eng/scientist
in 1 base. The soldiers didnt have Perma Death and you would get 1 soldier a month.
There was a mod available for free which made this game like the hardcore X-Com we
all know. It allowed you to place soldiers/eng/scientist at any base and it also sent you
Tons of soldiers which you could then pick out the most leveled ones and either fire the
rest or send them in as meat grinders for the battle.

The X-COM 2012 remake has been in production for about 3 years now and its said to
be released at the final quater of 2012 (Fall) and they are pushing the 1st person shooter
crappy one to 2013.

quadnad check out this video you might want to hold off untill the release!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nRuofTCB5I
check out this Video , dont think this game is going to disapoint anyone since they are taking
everything we hardcore gamers love about the game and they are expanding on it. Most of the
people working on the game are Hardcore X-COM fans. It's coming to PC and Console!

Very nice homage, NastyNative :)

I pre-ordered Xenonauts a while back.. They just released a new alpha version that adds a fresh coat of paint. The game is far from complete but the gameplay stands fairly true to the Xcom original.

The problem with all of the Xcom clones and "remakes" over the years is that every one of them thought they could alter and improve the formula. Every one of them has failed so far.

Xcom Enemy Unknown is going to be an excellent game, I'm sure, but obviously isn't going to be the UFO we knew. Xenonauts is the only game I know of that is faithfully recreating the features from the original as close as possible without breaking the formula.

The more I look at Xenonauts, the more I want to purchase it.
Im very excited for 2K's reimagining of X-COM, but Im afraid they
will leave something out. Please tell me if Xenonauts will include these options.

I played UFO Enemy Unknown on PC, then purchased Terror from the Deep and I had way
more fun playing TFTD since you could bring down an alien ship over water and still
be able to land your squad on it. The Harpoon guns were fucking hilarious, but hey
they did the job.

One of the biggest satisfactions I recieved from this game was being able to build
bases. Having put in many hours of gaming and seeing the fruit of my labor basically
destroy the alien invasion by having bases all over the world and having them
all filled with the best aircrafts and weapons. If 2K's new game only allowes me to
build 1 Base ( Ant Farm ) It will be very upsetting to me.

Another part of me is saying its time for something new.
I have put in endless hours on UFO EU and TFTD on PC, then I purchased
UFO EU for the PSone. I played these game many times and eventually
I couldnt play them anymore since the graphics were so aged.
I then purchased UFO Extraterrestrials in 2007 put in tons of hours only to realize
that I could not have soldiers in all bases and that feeling of satisfaction has
never been replaced.

Do you guys know if Xenonauts will allow me to have many bases that I
could pack with personal and allow me to launch missions from any
base I build?

When will Xenonauts will be finished?

Although I don't know the exact answer to your first question, I'm fairly certain there are multiple bases - Xenonauts has a forum where you could post the question to be sure though. As to a release date, I think it's "when it's finished", though the developer has cited that they would ideally want the final product to arrive before the Firaxis remake.

That gun was amazing!

It was also capable of transforming geography. I used it to blow up the mountain containing the entrance to the Cydonia base. I ended up shoe horning the blaster launcher hover tanks into the underground base. Alien bastards didn't stand a chance.

As far as I know, Xenonauts is a remake of the first game. I haven't seen any features that indicate it will incorperate "TFTD" mechanics, such as underwater missions.

Yes. You can have multiple bases in Xenonauts

When will Xenonauts will be finished?

Release date is currently slated for Autumn 2012. Nothing solid yet.

Man reading this discussion makes me want to go kill some Lobster men in TFTD. Amazing how fun these games still are.

One thing I'm concerned about with the Enemy Unknown remake is the ripping out of the time units. Guess I'll have to see how it feels, but I hope it doesn't feel too simplified. That was a pretty huge aspect of how you played the original game, and provided a definite feeling of advancement for each soldier as they gained more time units. I wonder if it will still feel like X-COM.

Also not sure I like not being able to build multiple bases either. I really enjoyed crafting bases all over the globe, each with their own purpose, whether it be research, manufacturing, PSI training or whatever. Did they ever say whether there would be base defense missions in the new one?

Woot! Dumb aliens trying to come into my base!
Those missions were fun! You would start with all the soldiers
stationed in your base, they lined up like a fucking Army.
The Aliens never stood a chance!

Yeah they will bring back all those missions included Terror
missions as well. Time Units, Im a little worried they wont include
them at all. In the other hand I'm kinda hopefull because even thought
they are creating a game that will appeal to these energy drinking wired
young game generation. They are also including an Original Game
mode with perma death and hopefully with Time Units. I like how
they made the cover mechanics which should add to the tactical
aspect of the game.

I hope they add some type of underwater mission.
Lobster Men are fucking awsome!
You think X-Com personal had lobster bisque back in the base?
Claws the size of heads!

The original mode you speak of (classic mode) will not reintroduce time units. Firaxis' plan & go system is fundamental to the game mechanics and implementing time units would take too much development time and would be infeasible given the nature of the other gameplay mechanics.

What would be really awesome is if someone created a 1:1 remake of the original in HD graphics 3d environment and updated artwork. Why the hell hasn't that happened yet???

The Firaxis version will no doubt be an excellent game but it's definitely not going to be anything like the original aside from a few features.

Regardless of Firaxis saying you will not see the same environment in two playthroughs of Xcom, the fact the levels are not random and procedurally generated is a bit sucky.

I wouldn't hold your breath for underwater missions to be included too.

Yes Mr_zen256 a 1:1 remake would be incredible in HD.
I played a modded version of TFTD which included both underwater and ground missions.
On the original TFTD you could not even engage a ship over land.
Only if the Alien ship landed could you do a ground missions, but even then
you could not collect the precious allows.

If some one made a 1:1 and combines both games in HD, they would be my heroes.

There was some one working on a 1:1 with new graphics, but they had to cancel the program
because 2K purchased the license. I can't freaking remember the site, I think some one
posted the link on [H]Forums.

also looking for new remakes I found UFO online.http://www.youtube.com/user/UFOOnlineGame
Xenonauts would be a much better game if they just kept it original 1:1 and added
underwater missions the way the modded version did.
I wish some one would make a 1:1

There is no hope :(

Had to load up DosBox and the original XCOM game, been playing for a bit recently. It's still as good of game as it was years ago.

I think I have a gripe with the reload though. They want to limit your squad to a few people, I already have had 30 people die in my current XCOM game in 10 missions, being shot in the back, from rockets, one even from friendly fire, by mind controlled "friendly fire". One of the occupied city missions I came back from with only 5 people out of 14, barely survived. It's painful to loose your commander or captain or some such high ranking person that has been on every mission, but the reload is almost taking that away by limiting the size of your team. You will be more prone to reloads since loosing someone will really hurt you. And loss is a real possibility on these missions.

Another game, UFO:Afterlight, a worthy successor to XCOM (IMHO) did this too, i never liked that about it. it makes the game not about the tactics where some losses are acceptable (which is real) and more about making sure that every team member survives since each loss can really cripple your team, because of the perks that they had.

Looking forward to this... hopefully they don't fuck this up.

Afterlight is nothing like XCOM, hated it.

Have to agree with ya there. The "After" series were ok games in their own right but not really comparable to the original Xcom.

I'm sure this reboot is going to be fun as hell to play, but again, I don't think it will capture the same essence of the originals. They've changed too many fundamental gameplay dynamics for it to be a "remake".

Such a difficult formula and atmosphere to mimic 100%.

woot I been waiting to catch a live stream instead of the pre recorded stuff which can edit game flaws.

Thanks Man!

I havent been playing much lately work has been killing me.
I Pre ordered Xcom Special Edition with all the extra content and
goodies gamestop is giving with the game. I dont plan on opening the
box and playing till sometime in late Dec.

You can catch me on TS everynow and then playing some BF3 TDM for a
quick fix..lol

Sure will! I need to hop back up there and chill with the guys. Been doing a few other things lately also.

New Amazon pre-order deal, you also get a copy of civ 5, from amazon, for free. You do not get the TF2 bonus items from Steam but you save $5 and get future $15 promotional credit.:

"XCOM: Enemy Unknown" ends Monday, October 8.
The pre-order bonus is a $15 promotional credit plus the Elite Soldier Pack which includes a Classic XCOM Soldier, Soldier Deco Packs, and complete color customization options.

I'm still trying to decide if I want the hardcopy SE over the digital, the physical bonuses remind me a lot of the stuff you used to get years ago when you bought a SE. I wish the box was metal with just the Vigilo/Confido insignia on it...that would be pretty badass...

That being said, I think this is going to be a GREAT game even though the community seems to be pretty divided over what was shown in the demo and recent videos.

Oh, nm, see it on the physical copy.

I was in the same predicament about the digital vs DVD.
Im a huge Digital Download Fan and thinking about it I kinda
feel bad about not getting more DVD copies.
I like displaying most of my games so it would be
nice to have a game box to display.
I still have my BF1942 & BF2 boxes but im missing
BF3 cause I dl it. I also have my original Xcom box & poster
and Terror from the deep.

The Tin box would be awesome but we know how much of a cheap
skate these fucking game companies are, Plastic is cheaper!

Eh, tinboxes are overrated imo. They scratch easily and since it's printed on it, defacing it happens way too easily.

I would take care of that case it wouldnt be in the stack,

I would also wax it 1 a week,,,lol

I really enjoyed the demo. I plan on buying the game soon if I can afford it. I didn't play the old X-Com games though so I can't say if it will please the old guard of the series. I liked how it was like old school rainbow six games of choosing a squad with different specializations and once that team member dies they are gone for good.

Holy hell

Anyone get a hands on with this that was a previous XCom player?? I'm dying to know if it's worth it. Such amazing memories I have of the original, this MADE me into a PC Gamer
