switched to -bigadv today, getting 1hr TPF on a 3.1Ghz i7 920, anything I should be worried about?

Yes, I would dump it and go back to standard -advmethods for now. To finish 2684's before the 4 day deadline, you need to be clocked at a minimum of 3.4ghz. I believe the max TPF possible that would allow you to finish it on time is around 55-57min or so, but that is if there are no unscheduled interruptions.

My rig at 3.46ghz manages to finish 2684's in 3.7 days with a TPF of 51-52min.
 
I think I hit 58 minutes and was still barely eligible for the bonus but any amount of down time... It's too close for comfort. OC the sucker if you can.

If you can do it that would be fantastic and a HUGE improvement. Honestly, you don't need to go that high. Probably 3.8-3.9GHz would be good enough but that's just a wild guess.
 
another quick question, it seems like 2684 doesnt seem worth the effort, PPD lower then regular A3 WUs, do I stick with it or just go back...

The P2684 should be a bit higher than regular A3s. What is your PPD and how many frames did you complete? What I would do is finish this WU and remove the -bigadv flag if you don't wish to continue folding them. Lately it seems to be hit or miss with the -bigadv WUs. Sometimes you will get one while other times you won't.
 
It should be about identical to regular A3s except for the P670x units. The biggest advantage is that while you are running one for 4 days, you wan't get a crappy P670x unit...

Yes, that would be the P2684's biggest asset if we were to consistently receive them. With all the P670x WUs floating around lately though, it's really hard to quantify what is better to run. More and more it seems that -bigadv means big WU and not big PPD, which is what Stanford meant the flag to designate.

If I set the -bigadv flag I also receive a lot of P670x WUs. If I don't, I never see them. Without the flag, the slowest WUs I receive are the P604x WUs but they are not very common and when I do get one it's just a minimal PPD drop. The only thing that makes it worth running the -bigadv flag at all is the P2685. From what I've seen they are not common enough to justify running the -bigadv flag on their own merit.

It would be very interesting to see what an average PPD calculated from a client running the -bigadv flag in say a month's time truly gets, compared to the same system running a client without it.

TPFs around 45-48min, calculator says PPD around 15k, currently at 23%
 
45.40 TPF, 19.9K ppd on one of my machines. I think you hurt yourself starting it at the lower clock speed. HFM's ppd calculator bases itself off of when you downloaded the unit and when you are projected to finish it. Since you first few percent were much slower, you hurt your total points you will get for the unit, which hurts your ppd. You frame times sound pretty good, though.

i had only done one frame when I started, from 2% onward it was at 3.99GHz
 
Just from what i have seen on my 2 i7's on average you will get more points with bigadv. i get 21,000ppd on a 2684 30-31,000 2685, 20,000 on most a3's except the 6700 series which i get around 15,000 ppd.
 
right you should be close to 20k ppd on a 2684 with an i7 clocked close to 4ghz. how are your temps? Is your RAM configured properly?

Edit: just realized I'm responding to an old thread. The 2684 unit discussed here is probably long gone, but I'll just keep talking to myself.

I have one currently processing in a machine with two GPUs that have been working on 353s for over a day. These GPU WUs consume more CPU cycles than any other for the GPU client. Needless to say, the TPF for this 2684 has increased close to the bonus threshold. I got to find some way to reduce the TPFs. It's still a couple of thousand PPD more than standard A3s, but I don't like skirting the bonus deadline like this.

Massive. It comes out to less than standard A3s for that whole amount of time your client was folding on that WU.
 
I think the absolute minimum at the cutoff is about 14k ppd....after the deadline it's somewhere around 2k ppd.
 
wow I had no idea it was that drastic. although I suppose it makes sense since you're comparing it to standard a3 + bonus. Both core WUs are only worth a couple thousand, but the bonus is huge.

Yeah, that is why so many of us with Core i7's get nervous everytime the rig pulls a 2684. Unless you are running it at a very high overclock, there is absolutely no margin for unscheduled downtime. A power outage or internet outage could ruin it for you since it will take 3.7 days @ 3.46ghz. Folding nearly 4 days and blowing it would suck. At least the Windows SMP client is rock solid stable.

Lucky you on the 353's. I know they take the most out of PPD but for heat production they are great as they run very cool. I've been stuck with 450's for a week now and have had to shut down my 8800gt:due to the heat(
 
Well did you finish?

I wrapped one up this morning and was promptly rewarded (punished) by getting another 2684.

yeah I got it finished, came out to something like 15k ppd :(

pulled a 2685 though so im happy :)
 
Congrats on finishing the 2684 and getting a 2685.

My ppd was averaging 33k but that is nothing compared to what I can get with the 2685s.
 
I7@3.8, memory@1520 triple channel - 46:00 tpf, 19.7K ppd, will finish 19 1/2 hours ahead of the deadline.

I7@4.0, memory@1688 triple channel - 43.45 tpf, 21.2K ppd, will finish 22 hours ahead of the deadline.

My time before deadline is based on actual download time and ETA from HFM. Calculating the end time from current tpf is very close (72.9 hours for the 4.0Ghz machine, 76.7 hours for the 3.8GHz machine.)

These are both dedicated machines, but they really aren't that close to missing the deadline. Unfortunately, they are both down about 10K ppd each from what they produce with P2685 units.
