WTB: Sony Laptop

My experience with Sony was a positive one however you may want to take a look at the new Dell 700m. I really like this unit. I have lappys from Dell, Gateway, Sony and IBM and I must say the 700m is a keeper especially at only around $1200 fully equipped

Bah.. I bought a Sony laptop from a Hardocp reviewer like 2 years ago... and its still an absolutely amazing and sturdy laptop. The thing is by far the best constructed laptop Ive ever had the pleasure of using, and has one of the brightest LCD's Ive ever seen (its a PCG NVR 23). Ive even dropped it off the table once or twice, with absolutely zero damage to the lappy. This thing is a TANK.

Sony is definitely the way to go with laptops, Kyle knows what's up :)

would an IBM T41 spark any interest, Kyle?

(Pentium M Centrino 1.4, 768mb, etc...)

U got lucky! :D  Honestly, I had no experience with sony laptops and was just trying to confirm that I heard on the net ;)

I've got a Sony GRX lappy and it's fantastic. Sony laptops are great machines. Granted a fair amount of them have backlight failures, but the parts are cheap and easliy replaced. Now if Sony offered something better than a 1 year warraty they'd be golden.

I know you said Sony specifically but since so many others seem to be mentioning alternatives I figured I'd put a note in for the DELL Latitude X300's. We've been deploying these for some time now at work for our traveling folk and they are decent performers and light as well... a notebook. =)

"Starting at 2.9 lbs..."

A word of advice though - get the 'media bay' in addition to or instead of the D-bay. The D-bay is nice but the Media bay (for the added weight) allows the concurrent use of a secondary full-size battery as well the use of external peripherals.

sony = sex, sex sells.

cant dogg him for wanting a sony.

you can dogg him for not trying out a powerbook tho ;)

umm, isn't this supposed to have offers of a Sony Viao to the big [H]ard man? not 3 pages of opinionated mumbling that has no pertenance whatsoever to the current subject? (and yes, i know this is just more spam, but spam with a purpose)

P.S. Bump :p

Actually, no. Kyle says to email him the offer, not to post in this thread. Maybe he left it unlocked in case there was a huge "NO!!!! NOT THAT!" response. Maybe he just forgot to lock it.

I have a T42p and I love it to death. It isn't heavy ( I carry it around all day), and I can still play some WoW or EQ2 when I have a few moments of free time.
Does a great job on the work side of things. IBM's laptop keyboards are oh so comfortable.
If you are putting *nix on it you'll be happy ot know there is no windows key ;)

Also, this will be my fourth Sony laptop, all of which are still in service today. Some of the best hardware I have ever owned. So say what you will....

I have one smaller and once you get used to the keyboard you will love the thing being so small! I don't think I will ever buy another laptop that weighs more than 3lbs again. It is great that the thing is actually portable unlike the DTR's that people try and pass of as mobile

I don't think anyone is trying to pass off DTRs as mobile, but they are easily transportable.

But yes, I agree with you on the size issue. I still use a PIII-500 Sony VAIO with a 12" screen. It has been great.

I can't wait to use this one with integrated wireless here in the house and a battery life of up to 6 hours! w00t!!1

Yo Kyle,

I have been working (serviceing) with laptops for more than 7 years now, and i know for sure that IBM and SONY rule the laptop world as far as quality and build goes, expensive DELL"s are good too, so here is a summary of my experience : IBM, the best keyboards, PERIOD!!! very good screens too. SONY : very good quality overall, PERIOD. So take my advice and get a SONY and skip the comments of people that had a single experience with a SONY or whatever brand of laptop.
Regards
T. :)

I, a mere mortal, dare not tread on a thread where others far greater than I have passed with courage before me. But since this is Texas, I guess I aint got nuttin ta worry about :D

All you need is a backpack..I have a gorgeous leather backpack to carry my Acer 1712 (specs in sig) around with me.

It's a DTR in every way. Weighs about 14.6 Lbs.

Any of you start whining, and I'll remind you that I'm a 5'3 female that weighed 92LBS at my last doctors visit...and yes, I am desperately trying to gain weight but that's drifting off topic. Come on you manly men, if a chick can comfortably carry a near 15 pounder (which would be about 17% of my body weight) every day, you guys should be able to handle it ;)

Of course, I am a unique woman, being Irish and all. We're made a shade more fiesty than most and I probably got more than my share of that fiestiness. Check out the car section for 74 Triumph Spitfire to see me and what else I do when not hefting laptops and fixing networks :)

bah, get a powerbook kyle !

I know the foundations of OS X are BSD baaed. Can you run a distro of FreeBSD on those? Sorry if OT..just curious.

Any Linux variant either?

just to chime in a little late. No offers for you but take a good look at the Sony VGN-S150 or VGN-S160 for a little more get up.

I've got the 150 and love it. Small, Awesome screen (widescreen) and never a problem.

I searched high and low for a laptop that I liked but they all felt like bloody desktops. Only one I found that suited the build (under $5,000)

Wow, under three pounds??!!!

Yeah...............I am not buying anything over three lbs after I bought this Actius MM20......2.1lbs is nice.

Soon, when I plop down my hard earned $$$ for a laptop, it _will_ be a Sony and it _will_ be an x505:

http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INT...page=static/lc/vaio/notebooks/x505/index.isml

They just don't come more "slim and light" done right.

Of course if there's something better available when I finally do purchase (no need right now), I'll get that.

BTW, there is no mobile DTR for my water-cooled system so this will NOT be a DTR. :)

Yes, pricing is ridiculous but so are my consulting fees...

Hehe daugheter has the TINY sony lappy, screen about 10", I cant use the thing, my big fat paws hit 4 keys when i try to type on the thing, but she abuses it and it keeps ticking, so thay are built like tanks.

I tested one of those before I bought the sharp mm20. I absolutely can't type on it with the keyboard pitched that far forward. My palms have to float and that sucks. If you haven't tried typing on one you might want to before you chump down $3000+

That is just my opinion but......
