personally i cant wait, already been priceing out all the 87 diffrent versions of the new ati chips trying to figure out what would be the most bang for the buck

im looking to 2x my overall ppd fro gpu clients alone

87? LOL, you must have been quite busy... I'm glad I have the X1900XTX already so I can just get a jump start when the cpu comes out and I'll also put it to folding the day it comes out :)
 
Is GPU folding gonna happen any time soon? Like this year?



 
We are beta testing the ATI GPU client software internally at the moment and will likely announce an open beta in four to five weeks (end of September).

They've actually really updated alot of info in the GPU folding/High-Performance FAQ sections of the site. If you click around, theres quite a wealth of information, as they're finding upto 40X (read 4000%) performance improvement over todays CPU client.

Given that the GPU client will most likely be a shader-driven application (as pixel shaders represent the truely programmable part of the GPU) I'm guessing the GPU with the most pixel shaders (or would it be vertex shaders?) per $ would weild the most performance/$
 
This is the first time i've regretted getting a 7900GT :(. I can say with certanty though, my next video card will be an R600.
 
yea i think from what ive seen on their pages it will require an ATI chip of some kind for the 32bit percision (of the cards out so far), and the x1900's seem to show the best performance.
 
It's not 32 bit precision that differentiates ATI from NV in the folding world. NV's chips have had 32 bit floating point precision since the NV3x/GeForce FX 5___. Perhaps those of us that follow the Video Card scene remember how bad the GF FX architecture was at running the Source Engine compared to ATI hardware of the same era. That was because the GF FX was forced to 32 bit floating point while ATI ran 24 bit floating point.

The R5xx has branch prediction, a huge advantage in the folding world.

Previous work of ours used NVIDIA GPUs as well, but we have now concentrated on ATI GPU's as they allow for significant performance increases for FAH over NVIDIA's GPU's (at least at the current generation)."

didnt mention anything about branch prediction :)

depends how you read it:

Especially now that ATi GPUs have 32-bit float operations, which they did not previously, we will require their GPU over nVidia [which may or may not have 32-bit floats]. Previous work of ours used NVIDIA GPUs as well, [maybe because nV had 32 bit floats while ATi did not?] but we have now concentrated on ATI GPU's as they allow for significant performance increases for FAH over NVIDIA's GPU's (at least at the current generation) [maybe b/c they have branch prediciton, while nv does not]
 
For one hint, look at the number of shaders in the latest models from both vendors. (Shaders do a lot of the work.) Okay, that's two hints, if you think about it. :cool:

According to the ATI press release today, yes, all X1900 models were mentioned, except for the 1900AIW model. Don't know if that was an oversight to leave that one out, or if that card isn't supported (yet?).

Personally, I would wait for Stanford to confirm that list before dropping $200-$400 on a card. Monday's release of the GPU client and details isn't so far away.
