I just got DSL and can finally game online. I have never even once played any online games (besides chess). I do very much like RPGs, but I don't know if I would like the MMORPGs. Even still, I would know no one, and would be starting knowing nothing. Do you think WoW is a fun game that anyone can enjoy? Also, I am married and wish to remain so, so is WoW something that I would have to make a commitment to? Like doing raids and the such? Is there any free way to try out WoW without buying the discs?

Also... how much is it to play per month? And... does anyone play Gildwars? I noticed that it was a free online game (once you buy the discs).
 
You can buy a $2 trial disc from somewhere like Game Stop. I tried WoW that way because I didn't want to pay $20 for the full game and $40 for the expansion.

I think you can still download the full client off their website for free and play a 15 day trial with it, but it's a really big file and the server is slow.

It really wasn't for me, but you might like it.

I think the monthly fee is $15.
 
Do you really need to buy the discs, or are they just in it for the monthly fee. What I am really asking is can I borrow someone's to install on my machine and then just pay for an account?
 
wow is a fun game to play until the thrill of new levels and then playing at max level wear off, and the game turns into grinding for incremental upgrades and boring slogs through reputation cockblocks.
 
dont waste your time with that game, it costs money monthly and in my opinion is a huge waste of time, I played for about 4 months, I regret it, im sure a lot of people will agree.
 
You could install the program with anyone's disks.

If you wnt to do the trial, then you just need to request a trial key. If you then like it at that point, you can go into the account management on www.worldofwarcraft.com and upgrade to retail version via creditcard.

I purchased the trial DVD from my local EBgames and then when I liked it I bought the retail boxed version. I never use the 4 CD's that came with the retail box as it is all on one DVD. It is nice to have a copy of the CD's lying around... just in case.

My advice... splurge 2.00 and buy the trial so at least you have the install files.
 
give the game a shot, just don't be a hyper anal representative and fall into the trap of ever upgrading your gear (which leads to long grinds and never logging off), level up and see the game for what it is, it can be beautifull and very entertaining!
 
WoW is fun, give the 15 day free trial a shot. Make a character on Dragonblight (server) and join my guild :p

Is this a game that my wife could possibly enjoy as well? Her gaming experience is limited to the Sims, the Sims 2, and Psychonauts (all of which she is good at). She doesn't think that she would be any good at it, and thinks that it looks too complicated.

My girlfriend is hooked on it. She only plays WoW, Mario Party 8, and trauma center. She loves WoW. Some advice if you plan on playing it with your wife, make one character that you only play with her, and one that you play by yourself. That way you don't have to worry about getting too far ahead (or behind if the case may be)
 
You can get somebody to send you a buddy key and dlownload the client from their site. It is a P2P download though, will take quite some time on DSL + the patches..... Good 5+ hrs of sitting there for you. I played WoW for 2 months, and I wokred almost full time and went to school. I gotta tell ya, as much as I hated to admit it, It ate my life. I still see a buddy I always played with on 24/7. You may see people say that only people with addictive personalities get addicted, I can assure you it isn't true. You meet people there for one, and it does get repetetive but it is quite fun for the most part. Now that I work at a demanding job that is helping me get my career started, I drive an hour each way to work and between that basketball and school I do not have a ton of time, I really do not feel like even picking the game up for some time. To be honest, there are fun factors in WoW, but most of the quest are a chore, it takes forever to get to some places you need to go to. If you have a ton of time on your hands, then yea it may be worth it, but if you do not, overtime, it will comsume most of your free time and you will feel no satisfaction playing. SOrry If I made no sence, Im tired as hell, fell asleep in my car, so I stayed home from school :(
 
What Ivan said is mostly true, if you find yourself sitting at home bored a lot, then WoW is awesome, but if you only have very little free time, it will consume you. I cut back significantly while I am still in school, but am still able to have fun with it on the weekends, enough to justify the monthly fee.

About the quests being a chore, most of the beginning level ones are. The game doesn't really get fun until level 50 or so, and most of the things before level 20 are "gather x amount of y" or "kill x amount of y" type quests, but that changes later and there are really creative quest lines with good stories.

For example, in one quest I did recently you have to find a sword for a guy named "Linken" and then take it to a swordsmith who lives near a hot spring so he can imbue it with magical powers or whatever, and then give it back to "linken". The guy at the hotsprings mentions how it is odd that anything he throws into always comes out better than it was. When you give it back to him he says that it is your destiny now and you must take it and slay a monster, a monster who happens to live on top of a volcanic mountain... if you don't get the reference to the legend of zelda by now you must have never played it.
 
OK... so we will go get the demo disc in the next couple of days. Once we do, we will create characters on Dragonblight. Then what do we do? Also, I would imagine that we will have to double up on the monthly fee since we will both want to play at the same time. Is that right? Will it matter that our traffic will be coming from the same IP address? How many characters can you create per $15/month account?

- If you do make a character on dragonblight let me know what your name is and I will find you in game and invite you to my guild, from there I or any of the other people in can help you out and get you started. I will even give you a few gold to get started

- Yes, you will need 2 copies of the game and 2 monthly fees if you both play at the same time, it was a small price to pay for the hundreds of hours me and my girlfriend have gotten out of it

- No, it doesn't matter that it comes from the same IP, we play on a home network with a router and it is fine

- You can make an almost unlimited number of characters, 10 per server I think with like 100 servers.

Play an FPS, don't get hooked on WoW. :p
The best idea is actually to play a lot of different games.
For example I play Battlefield 2 (Special Forces and Dcon as well), WoW, Rainbow Six Vegas, STALKER, FEAR, Oblivion, C&C 3, and ET: Quake Wars.

Look into joining a clan.

They mostly play BF2 and WoW but theres some diversity.

LOL, I will tell you, you can get hooked, and you can certainly end up playing longer than you expected to, but if you have any self control it won't negatively impact your life. Just use it to fill in the time that you would otherwise be bored and looking for something to do
 
Alright... so is this the type of game that you and 8 of your buddies have previously scheduled a raid at 7:00pm and you really need to be there, or it more casual and if you have time to play, you can hook up with some people and go do a raid, or what?

My wife is saying that she doesn't really feel like she could devote a bunch of time to a game, and doesn't want to commit to any set schedule for playing. I have more free time than she does, but I wouldn't want to have to tell my wife "not right now honey... I have a raid scheduled in 5 minutes that I really need to go to". You know what I mean?
 
Okay let me break this down, this is a complicated question.

There are 70 levels in the game right now. Before you get to level 70, which will take months, you can easily play the game at your leisure. After you get to level 70 there is plenty more to do that can also be done at your liesure, like all of the level 70 5-man instances and heroic instances, which can be done with PUG's (Pick up groups, unscheduled, unplanned).

Once you get to the point that you have nothing more to gain from that (which will be a year or more from now if you play 2 or 3 hours a day), then in order to keep progressing to get the best of best gear you have 2 options. You can either start raiding with a guild on a schedule (~4 hours a night, 4 or 5 days a week), OR you can do PvP (player versus player) and accumulate enough honor points to buy the high end PvP gear, which, for the most part, is equivalent to the high end raiding gear.

PvP is not a breeze either. In order to get good gear you will need to put hundreds of hours into it, but it can be on your own time and can be a lot of fun. There is a certain thrill you get killing a real person (or several at a time) that you don't get from killing an NPC.

You don't have to take it this far though, and a lot of people don't. If you get your character to a point that you are satisfied with and simply do not have enough time to PvP or raid, you can use the money you made on that character to start another one, which will be a lot easier since you can fund him with your first character. Of course, you could just be satisfied that you "beat" the game, and quit it like all others, but likely you wont want to

Even if you do have self control it is hard to put down, the game offers so much and you just want to always make your dude better. Unless your entire family are gamers I would not pick it up, honestly, it may be a bad idea.
 
I see. So... it is not necessary that you plan anything, especially in the beginning. That is a good thing.

I have time to play, I just hate to schedule anything. I have put over 160 hours on my character in Oblivion in the last 3 or 4 months, so I do game quite a bit. I may game for 10 hours straight on my day off, but then I may not game at all for a week. It just depends on what I have going on. Maybe I will play for 15 minutes until something comes up. Maybe it will be 5 hours. There really is no telling, and that is how it would need to be for me to be able to play WoW. Make sense?
 
In my person opinion you should never devote yourself to a game.
It just stops being fun.
 
I played it in beta and a few months when it first came out. I stopped because I wasn't into the end game raiding at all (and it was pre-battlegrounds).

I still think it was a fun game and I got my money's worth. There's plenty to see and do. If you're only playing a few hours, you should get months of play out of it. If it stops being fun, stop playing. If you don't stop playing when it's not fun anymore, whose fault is that?

Aaahhhhh.... the innocence of levels 1-60. Those are the best times in WoW, and some of my fondest gaming memories ever. Such an amazing world to explore, and even better with a few good friends.

But then once you hit 60 (or 70), you start getting into repetitious raiding and the game turns into this sort of whorefest of who can get the coolest looking armor. It's fun at first, but it can turn into a massive time sink really fast.

When you go do something with 5 other people (or however many there are), how do you end up splitting the loot?

money is auto distributed to each person equally.

loot can be done several ways. typically for pugs (pick up groups, ie random people) you will use wow's built in rolling system, which allows you to roll need or greed or pass. you usually greed roll any bind on equip items, and roll need on bind on pickup.

Might I suggest Counter-Strike 1.6 Its very old, but very good. Runs on bascially any computer and still has a huge player base. I can play this game for hours on end (8+ if I want to) or I can play it for 10 min and break away and be ok that I'm not playing it. :p
 
My girlfriend and I have been playing WoW for quite some time now. Coming up on a year together, and before that apart. I still think its currently the best MMO on the market. There is a LOT of content to be had to take you up to level 70. This isn't something you'll do in a month or two, unless you are an 8+ hour per day powergrinder. Have fun with it, do quests, read lore... its really worth it. Group or solo at your leisure - there will be dungeons that require 5 people along the way, but you could conceivably solo to 70 if you wanted.

My girlfriend is basically my wife, we live together and have for 4 years, we share a car and share our money and bills, I just got done playing WoW with her for 3 hours. We have a lot of fun playing it together. If you wife doesn't enjoy the things you do maybe you should find someone more compatable
 
Alright... I got the demo disc. I have installed it. I got the updates (well over a gig worth). Now I am about to choose a server.

My wife is finishing up setting up her account.

We have no idea what kind of characters to create. She wanted to be a bit more passive, and I suggested that she might try a priest so that she can stand back and heal people. The online tutorial thing said that to be a priest, one should be very quick and pay close attention. She said that certainly wasn't her. So, now I am looking at maybe her being a druid. Any help here?

I don't know what I want to be either. I like using magic and bows and stuff.

You should be a warlock. A warlock is a cross between a mage and a hunter. Warlocks get "minions" that you can control that will attack things for you and hold their "aggro" (aggression, means it will attack them and not you). With the bad guy attacking your minion you can stand back and cast some of the most powerful spells in the game. If you like being the top damage dealer in any group you are in then you will love being a warlock. Also, soloing with them is dead simple, and you can use your minion to get out of some sticky situations. One of your minions lets you sacrifice it which gives you shield that absorbs enough damage to let you run away from any fight. Warlocks are often considered the most overpowered class in the game. I have a 55 lock right now and I love it, it is so much easier to do stuff with than my warrior was at the same lvl (he's at 70 now)

As for your wife, a druid sounds like a good idea. Druids are a combination class, they can heal, tank, and dps (damage per second). They also can shapeshift into different animals which girls seem to love to be able to do. They can use most weapons and armor in the game and are very versatile.

Oh and be alliance lol. Resolution can be changed from within the game, not before you start though. If you start on Dragonblight server let me know your name
 
OK, well, I was going to be a night elf, but I can't be a warlock if I am a night elf. I guess I will be a human then. If my wife and I want to start out in the same spot, we will have to be the same race is that correct?
 
I got the demo today aswell and installed it and updates. i jsut needed a new game to play here and there, and i dont mind the fee. Lets see how it goes.

If you guys want to be different races it would be no big deal for me escort one of you to the others starting area so you can play together
 
Another question... is there some sort of tutorial quest or something that shows you how to play the game as you play the game, or do you have to read the manual to figure it out?

I have to go cook now. I will be back in a little while. I am going to join dragonblight, and my character name is going to be "Flipper Bizkut". My wife will be "Casio Kitty".
 
The people that say "It will ruin your life" either don't know what they are talking about or have absolutely no self control. My wife and I have been playing since Nov 2006 and are happy. We log about 2 hours a nite during the week (once the kids go to bed) and still manage to find time to take care of my children, visit grandparent and friends.

So, if you play the game. Yes, it can be addicting at times. But you just have to have some self-control and don't let the game control you.
