i mean this way you know you won't be getting some crap someone else returned because of back-light bleed....uniformity.....dead pixels..etc right?

Yea but then you would be stuck with your brandy new but defective display that has heavy back-light bleed, uniformity, dead pixels ;)

Besides, if a place with a great return policy sent you an open box display by mistake, and it's very easy to tell, all you would have to do is return/exchange it for a brand new one.

There's no guarantee you'll receive a perfect monitor from anywhere. Lots of defects go missed even when being tested straight after production. So I'd say, the chances of getting a dud are the same, even from sites that have a poor return policy. Best to order from a place that is open to returns. Having to RMA is sometimes a hassle but it sure beats being stuck with a defective piece of equipment that you paid a lot of money for.

Buy Planar and you can get the replacement cross-shipped from them should you have such issues... for free.
