Would u buy WoW CE for $2k ?

Will there be a CE for Cataclysm?

of course, bliz would be foolish not to put out a CE, they have done one for every other game they have ever released, including diablo 1.

the one collection i see going for alot of money is they guy that has unopened CE's of WoW, BC, WoLK, and Cata. i'de be supprised if it didnt fetch 10k or higher.

I do not think the situations being presented are comparable though. WOW at the time of its release was not predicted to be anywhere remotely as popular as it eventually turned out to be, the initial run of collectors editions in relation to the current fan base is relatively small. The amount of collectors editions for Cata that will be sold and bought will likely be very large by comparison, same with SC2.

I have WotLK CE. Any chance I'd ever be able to get a WoW or TBC CE for a reasonable price? Seeing as how much these go for I may just buy 2 Cataclysm CEs.

I wouldn't pay $2 for it let alone $2000 for it :p

One example of your point is that you can still buy WotLK CEs brand-new from some places. I also recall seeing SHELVES full of TBC CEs at Fry's MONTH'S after the initial release.

The only CE that has skyrocketed in value is the original WoW CE. It was much more limited and harder to come by these days. I would expect there to be a surplus of Cataclysm CEs, so if you want to buy one to re-sell it, don't expect to get that much more than what you paid.

The original collectors edition is just that, a collectors edition, it was quite hard to come by when it was out, even more so know, and it comes with a panda!

I actually have one collector edition. Its been opened and used , but still in perfect condition. I wonder how much i could get for it. Its not a price check by the way

it also comes with a Zergling and a Min-Diablo pet. The original CE was actually more along the lines of a Limited Edition. When WoW was released it was selling $500 on ebay new and now it nearly doubled in value every year since the release.

The saddest part is that someone who is buying this already plays WoW but never bought a copy of the CE at release. But probably wants it anyways. So they are going to register a new account with it, then register a second copy of all the expansion CEs with it, then pay $25 a character to transfer them to the new account... All for the sake of 3 in game pets...

I agree the seller chose a pretty good time. I expect the game to start declining not too long in the future and interest in such an item should subside.

Man - After seeing that I really wish I had got the collectors edition when I went to the midnight release.

Me too, I also think a store near me had a bunch of them on the shelves, will have to check it out :)

So basically they are paying $2000 for those 3 pets

That's not how it works. You can just add a vanilla WoW CE's CD/DVD key to your existing account even if it already has the normal vanilla WoW (likewise with any CE of expansions. In your account, the CE will replace the normal edition. You will get the bonus pets in-game on your existing characters.

I know this for a fact as my GM friend gifted me a couple CE's keys to replace my normal stuff years ago. At the time, there was even a special menu for it (under account management, it had a link that specifically said "add collector's edition").

I believe it's now rolled into the battle.net system, but it will still work the same way.

Also I would assume that a really big fan would be just as excited about having the extra goodies inside as he would the in-game pets. The CE's boxes for Blizzard stuff has all kinds of junk like posters, maps, soundtracks, artbooks, etc. Definitely not worth $2000 to me (I haven't even play WoW in a really long time), but I'm sure to some fans and collectors, it is.

My brother bought the BC collector's edition last year for about 90$

My wife and I bought TBC CEs at Fry's about 6 months after it came out for $30 each when they were clearancing them. lol. We both upgraded our accounts to the CE version. Easy and painless.

By the way, didn't the original WoW CE only offer you the choice of 1 of the 3 pets? I don't recall that you got all 3...

I have a collectors edition, I actually had 2 when the game released, I should have kept the second one..... The Diablo pet was really cool. Anyone know what a mint opened box is worth?

Be like this guy and go to kinkos and have it shrink wrapped.

Sell it on ebay for 2,000 as factory sealed.

I think WoW originally was only projected to have what 500k subscribers? Which is why the collectors edition is worth so much now since its at 11m. I mean there fan base expanded by 20x. Considering the original supply remained the same, its not surprising the value of original CEs have skyrocketed.

There's more than just pets in each CE...

The art book & soundtrack are good, too. The cards are so-so since the CE foil cards sometimes have a good game code but most aren't all that great.

not everyone who buys CE are nerds who are obsessed with the game. I'd imagine that someone who pays 2k for an collectors item (of any sort) doesn't even need to be interested in the game, in playing the game that is.

this could be an investment, something to hang onto. remember a few months back there was some nintendo 8-bit cartridge that sold for 10k or higher. it wasn't even a great game, but it was one of only a few in existence. in 15-20 years time, this game could be the same. someone might just see some amazing returns on an item like this.

Thats a good line to tell my fiance. Im buying these games as an investment to our future!

Auctions like this are a good selling point for socialism & income redistribution.

Guess I should have held onto my second copy for a bit longer (bought 2 CE's at launch) - sold it over a year ago for $1,100. Didn't ever think it would get to this level of insanity. Now if I could just get that much out of my existing CE activated account :)

You really think it is surprising that a rare collectors item and piece of online gaming history is selling for a few thousand dollars?

I do love watching how people in this thread continue to believe that the person buying this is doing so for a couple pets.

Person 1 has an item he/she/it wants to sell

Person 2 wants to buy the item that Person 1 is selling and is willing to pay a price that he/she/it thinks the item is worth.

Why do you guys have a problem with that? I don't get it.

Yes I'm surprised. It's an incredible waste of money to purchase a game you're never going to be opening for that amount of money. If you wanted to purchase the WoW:CE, you could just buy a used one in mint condition for under $200 rather than an unopened box.

Don't get me wrong. I'm an avid video game collector with an insanely large collection, and have spent a fair bit of coin on certain games, but it comes down to rarity. For Ultima: Escape From Mount Drash, Nintendo World Championship Gold Cart, or Kizuna Encounter, I would consider paying that amount of money, as there are only a few known copies of each. For a Limited Edition of thousands, it drives down the price of what I'd be willing to pay.

The problem is rarity itself does not give something value. Value from collectors items is a combination of rarity and demand. While those items you listed might be more rare then WoW: CE (not the expansion CEs, sorry people who did not hop on early), the interest in WoW completely dwarfs the interest in the games you mentioned.

Again the WoW CE is a special case, which people bringing up other CEs and WoWs later expansion CEs are not realizing. When WoW was released no one expected the game to be anywhere near its popularity now. The amount of CEs available and bought was based on its popularity then. When its expansions were released the game had become monstrously popular and thus more CEs were available and bought for those expansions. Therefore there is a huge interest in WoW CEs relative to the amount of copies available.
