I'm wondering if the motherboard is bad or what else I should do to try and get this PC up and running again. Here is a quick breakdown, I did not keep track of all of the specific error messages (didn't realize this would turn into such an adventure) but I can provide more details; I thought I would see if these problems are indicative of a likely culprit.

I have a friend's PC on my desk that is displaying some strange behavior. It's an HP p6130y with an AMD Phenom x4, 8gb ram on Win 7 Pro (full install after PC was purchased w/ Vista Home).

It began hanging on boot up and I thought it might be a bad HD. I ran the check disk, it found errors, fixed them, booted up but Windows was looking pretty shabby; aero was unavailable, no networking, no restore files available and some other problems. Tried to run a repair install, left the room and came back to a blank white screen, frozen PC.

Restart, Windows RC, reset BIOS, etc., to no avail. I have his partition cloned so I figure I'll try a new install. Sometimes the HD gets detected, sometimes not but the chkdsk stopped finding errors and I could see the drive fine from windows on another machine. Even booting from a CD would give me a message like 'device inaccessible' (referring to the CD drive) So I started thinking SATA controller and used an external DVD drive to reinstall Win7. When trying to install Windows again it would get stuck on the expanding stage and read "Windows cannot install the required files. The file does not exist, etc" with the error code 0x8007002.

I have replaced the SATA cables, tried a different DVD player and HDs formatted with the cloned partition and one with a new install but the new install would flash blue screen (didn't catch the stop error) and restart, the cloned partition would sometimes start, sometimes not. If it did start, it would be very slow and once I restarted, it would go through the same series of problems again.

I'm running the memory and disk tools on UBCD but thought I would check here for some piece of advice or direction I could take while I'm waiting on them to complete.
 
That does sound like a bad mobo to me. But it might also be a CPU issue as well.
 
Are those problems symptomatic of a bad PSU? I have not connected it to a different power supply, I just did not think that was it but I guess it's a worth checking. I tested the CPU and memory with UBCD w/ no errors over several passes so I'll probably order a new board.

He's one of these guys that is terrible about planning ahead and the only reason his data was backed up was because I just do it occasionally when we're at his place for a cookout or something.

PSU issues are usually more stability related rather than function/capability related. But worth a try to rule out every cause.
