Would these cards equal one 7970?

They would be adequate or slightly faster depending on the crossfire scaling of the game you are trying to play. As far as wondering if you needed to upgrade or not that is something that obviously you can decide on your own, if you find that you aren't satisfied with your level of playability do something about it, but certainly don't upgrade unless you need to. I'd hate to see you waste money on an upgrade to play games you can already max settings on.
 
I can currently max settings on every game I have played just fine. I haven't played swtor yet and I am hoping to max that too. I was just wondering if the 7970 would be better than my two 6950s.

You said something about "crossfire scaling." Would you mind expounding on that a little bit more for the less intelligent please? :)

Granted my 7970 may be CPU bottlenecked a guy i work with has two 6950's with unlocked shaders. he scored over P10k on 3dmark2011 with 4.5ghz core i7 2600k. I scored P7313 with non overclocked AMD 960T.

Personally id rather have a single 7970 then two 6950s, because less power requirement, less crossfire hassle -- but in games that properly utilize crossfire/sli id expect 6950's to be quite a bit faster. games that dont, which mostly seem like older DX 9 games or console ports dont really need it in most cases.
 
Two 6950s will be faster than a 7970, unless the 7970 is overclocked - at which point, both are pretty much neck and neck.

The 7970 has other benefits, uses less power and you don't have to wait for Crossfire profiles. Whether that is worth the extra coin is something you'll have to decide. I'd go for the 7970, as I always prefer single GPUs over dual.
 
Well, my two 6950s are worth just about the same as one 7970, so I'll probably just keep them. Unfortunately both cards are laser cut so there is no way for me to unlock the shaders. I have the i7 2600k and a pretty amazing system in general so the crossfire profiles load in just a second or two therefore eliminating the "profiles wait" that you guys are describing. I'll probably upgrade to two 7950s once more demanding games come out that my system can't max on (which will probably be a while). I love playing games in max settings with no lag whatsoever so I am a little picky on my graphics cards.

They're not talking about loading time of profiles, they're talking about waiting for AMD to actually release the profiles after the games come out. Until you have a crossfire profile for the game (via CAP or new drivers) you generally get poor scaling with the second card. In some cases new titles can be faster with Crossfire turned off (using only one card).
 
Hey guys, I was just wondering if two of these cards:

I am only asking because I already have these cards and I was wondering if I needed to upgrade yet or not.

Those are awesome cards.Have you flashed them to unlock the shaders? Not an upgrade going to a single 7970, unless you are having serious issues with CrossFire....
 
crossfire scaling=how much performance is given by the 2 or multiple gpus used in tandem. The card, thier memory, the physical processing power of the gpus is used to "power" an image, a task or other work. Scaling is how much extra performance is given in return for using 2 cards in tandem vs using just the one.

Some games, applications and other tasks show very good scaling, others show none to reduced performance because the application in question is not able to take advantage of the gpus as one processing unit.

Different generations of card can have a major effect on scaling. Example 6800 or 6900 cards used together, as well certain combinations of cards 6950 with a 6970 or dual gtx260 may not scale as nicely as say GTX460s.

There is alot to take into account. Dual 6950s are more powerfull then a 7970, however, the 7970 has a massive overclocking headroom and actually ends up slightly ahead in this regard. Also, 7900 series cards seem to handle high resolution as well as quality setting alot better then other cards currently out there, they just have more under the hood sort of speak. Also as someone pointed out, their power draw, temperatures among everything else sets them far apart of other cards as well.

So in a general sence a single 7970 is comparable to dual card of the last generation, once overclocking is taken into account, it makes even more sence(they were built to overclock far more then any card AMD has ever released)
