worth getting E8500 over E8400?

I was just about the say the same thing about the $20 difference. I too am planning on buy either one of these. Think I'm going to go with the E8500. If I can get 3.8 ghz on one (on air), I'll be happy. If I can get 4 ghz, then really cool.

I got 3.8 on my E8400 and Asus P5Q Pro without even changing vcore. It took a little to get 4.0 at 1.28 vcore and I am sitting at 4.2ghz now on air with 1.35v. I think 4.4-4.5 is what I would be aiming for on the e8500 on a capable motherboard.

I would do it, E8500 seem to be the golden chips next to E8600.

Damm kinda old thread, i just looked back and laughed, Like i said, i would take a E8500 over a E8400 any day of the week, Why? Just experience seeing them clock in very decently over some E8400. Only reason i would go E8400 is if i plan to stay under 4.5Ghz on air.

look at the voltage!!!! 1.58!! I get 4ghz stable on 1.28 on my e8400. if i pumped 1.58, who know how high it may go. i dont have a setup to cool that chip at that temp, as most people here prob dont either. insane voltage for a cpu whose VID is prob 1.050....

I bet you $100 bucks your chip wont do 5.0ghz @ 1.58V that is 20 full ibt stable. Its not that im doubting the chip, but from your post, im doubting you.

I see on slick deals there was a deal for an e8500 for $150 FS. That was an amazing deal that I missed out on, but I am happy with my E8400. I started reading the thread at the begining and saw it was from 08 when they said they were $100 difference. haha

1.58v is not a lot with the right cooling.....

It's still dangerous. Just because it is cool doesn't mean you aren't doing fatal damage to your CPU. I would never go over 1.45 with a 45nm unless I had Liquid Nitrogen or better cooling. I like to have my processors for longer than 2 years =P

I got my e8500 from Fry's for $158 with an ECS motherboard (which I sold). I also have an e8400 that I picked up for a ridiculous slickdeal combination deal from Newegg. The benefit of the e8500 is the e0 stepping, which I've managed to get prime stable up to 4.1ghz with stock volts. Above that needs a little more voltage, but I need some better ram to fine tune it since I think my RAM may be the limiting factor on my FSB speed. The e8400 is a c0 (or whatever the "bad" stepping is) and it runs up to 3.6ghz stock volts, and then needs more juice to get to the magic 4.0ghz.

If you have an e8400, I wouldn't upgrade - buying a new dual core, I'd pay the $20 for the e8500 for better overclocking. But that's just based on my experience - I'm sure many have done just fine with their c0 e8400s, since it's always YMMV or overclocking.

More is better, and Greed is good..other wise I would have stopped with my P3..lol

naaah, realistically, it was the northwood pentium 4 @ 2.4ghz or higher that ended the *absolute* *need* for the vast majority of people to get a better CPU for typical desktop tasks

Just curious what was the combo on newegg for the e8400 you got? I got mine with an asus p5q pro combo back when I got mine a couple months ago. I didn't think the extra mhz was worth it since I got quite a bit better deal with the combo.

If I got an E8500 I would get it to run at 4GHz on air. I think that's all I'll need for a long while. I'm not sure with Intel Core 2 Quad will get me 4Ghz on air though.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I felt this was better than starting a whole new one. I want to see what people have to say to this 8500 vs 8400 question now that they are just $20 apart in price. I'm in the market for a gaming CPU but I think I'm leaning toward dual core rather than quad in order to get more raw power over multithreading, and will upgrade when more games REALLY start taking advantage of 4 cores.

I got my E8500 right when it dropped down to the price it is right now, I think it is definitely worth it because in general the E8500 will OC higher, I got mine running @ 4GHz on stock voltage.

Wow that's kinda messed up seeing this now, which is contradictory to reviews I've seen when buying my 8400. Meh....

I bought a BNIB E8500 from one of our forum members, vanilla_guerilla, for $150 awhile back as opposed to paying $115-130 for a used E8400. I'm only running at 4.01 right now, but I've pushed the thing way higher on reasonable voltages.... there just isn't any need for it to run faster quite yet.

I personally like being able to use lower bus speeds if necessary for OC'ing so that I have more options with FSB:RAM ratios so the E8500 was worth it.
