Worth adding an nVidia card for PhysX?

Looking to add in a 8800GT or a GTS 220 or GTS 450 for physX with ATi. Worth going through the trouble? Will cost me about 80-100 USD.
 
If you have games that can effectively use the physX rendering then go for it. I was thinking about doing something similar with a AMD HD7950 and a GTX 550 ti.
 
Probably not, unless the rumored Kepler Physx acceleration is somehow back-ported to older cards. Also check and see, because some low-end cards are actually slower than having no card at all. I think the 8800GT falls in that category, and I wouldn't be surprised if the 220 was also.

Hmm, that whole back porting issue makes me a bit weary. Thanks for letting me know.
Also heard GenL is not doing the updates anymore, so might be a bit late to the party.
 
I run an 8800GTX in PhysX mode with my 7970 (used to be a 5870) and no games even come close to maxing it out!!! It also allows me to have AMD as my primary GPU, while still allowing CUDA programs such as encoders and the like to run.

If you have the spare cash and can find a nice card, I say go for it. If not BOTH of those are met, wait until they are. No sense spending cash on a shit card.
 
I've done it in the past, but found it to not be worth the extra power usage/heat for me (and I already had the cards). An 8800GT couldn't do max physx in Batman AA. You may want to compile a list of gpu physx compatible games that you want to play and weight that vs. having an extra gpu sucking power before you make the jump. Very few games out there utilize gpu physx.

Key part is if.

There are tons of games that use CPU-Physx, to the tune of 300+ games IIRC. But 20 or so released titles that can offload the calculation to a GPU. Many of those titles are things no one cares about like Hot Dance Party I, and the thrilling sequel Hot Dance Party II. Some big name games use it, but not much else:

have they made it so you can run AMD and Nvidia simultaneously? in the past Nvidia has disabled PhysX if detecting an AMD card.
 
physx for 80-100 bucks? hell nah

if you have an old 8800 or 2xx laying around, or a friend has one he doesn't uses - go for it.
Cryostasis, Metro 2033, Mirror's Edge, Batman... not sure what else to play with physx, but those are pretty cool.

IMO this silly monopoly gpu-physics with no games coming out anyway, has basically boiled down to a "superior-feature-amd-doesnt-have" hype in the marketplace, and it needs to die off.
