How come nobody is building Woodcrest machines? I know it's a server processor but remember everyone building Opteron rather than X2?

Anyone else lusting after a Woodcrest build?

maybe they are harder to find than conroe processors?
Also, they may be more expensive? Here is newegg's pricing for them.

Just looking at that pricing, a 3Ghz Woodcrest is cheaper than a 3Ghz Conroe so it can't be CPU price. Maybe as the other person mentioned it's memory/motherboard?

FB-DIMMs are roughly twice as expensive and slower than DDDR2, the woodcrest CPUs are 50% more expensive than conroe with no performance increase, and the motherboards start at >$300 and aren't overclocker-friendly. Enthusiasts only really got interested in opterons when the 939s came out.

Edit: the 3ghz woodcrest is slightly cheaper because the x6800 caters to "price is no object" people.

I nearly built one of these systems.

Would have cost me roughly $3500 for Quad 3.0Ghz, 2gig memory, board, FB mem, etc

In the end, decided against it.

I'd love to hear what your components were if you still have a list.

Apple, Alienware, etc... there are people making them.

Its just kind of expensive with the FB-dimms.

It would be tempting to buy an Apple, run Winders (via boot camp) on it.... then maybe upgrad the machine to Kentsfield (quadcore) later!

My Dell Precision 690 is supposedly on they way, they were having problems getting my 5150s and the dual quadro 3450s. I can't wait to fire it up, my pair of ES 5150s have been tearing it up F@H for the [H]orde. Woodcrest is great, I replaced a pair of 5060 dempseys with the 5150 woodcrests and the gains are clearly noticable. Hopefully we see an nVidia chipset come out in the next few months, or nVidia allow SLI on the 5000x chipset.

You can actually build a better machine for less than Apples new Power Mac and anyone else for that matter.

Need the new Tyan board that has 2 16x PCIe slots, onboard audio, etc. Very good, cheap board. There is a review of the board on gamepc.com. The board is only around $350.

Then, 2 x 3.0GHz Woodcrests CPU's, get retail so you get the big fat copper HS/Fan's. Those around about 890 - 900 each.

2gig of FB DDR, that's about 400'ish.

Anyways, it can be done. I had one priced out. Would have been a screaming bad-ass system.

That would have been nice, but very expensive.

I prefer my system. :D
i just need to get in my new block and i will be doing +3.4GHZ
