Wolfenstein

I'm not sure why people are saying the game looks bad. It's an EXTREMELY good looking game for the Doom 3 engine. It's a bit better looking than Quake wars and I think the engine holds up nicely.

just what i was thinking..

anyway, im not sure why everyone is so up-tight about graphics, for me once it reaches a certain level it is good enough, i wont be bothered by them and can enjoy the game.

I for one am glad that there's still games out there that aren't using the Unreal 3 Engine.

I just wish I was getting Id Tech 4 levels of performance out of it. I've had to bump down to 1440x900 to keep the game playable most of the time and I still get drops that I consider unacceptable quite often.

Something definitely seems wrong because I run UE3 games at 1920x1200 and get better framerates than this, and while I'm not a particularly big fan of the UE3 look, the games look a lot better than this does.

Heh

One of the first things I thought when I went throught the water is that the graphics were reminding me of Bioshock which is a UE3 game.

Definately has this COD, Prey and Bioshockyish.........kind of feel to it.

BUT, I'm finding the sp damn fun and as well done as anything else out there that is a linear fps where you shoot Nazi's. *shrugs* I've been so into FO3 and Stalker and Crysis and all that sandbox stuff that I think I was ready for a good old fashioned shooter and I'm liking it.

I just completed RTCW in preperation for this game, and I mean I literally killed Heinrich and then launched this game, and it is definately in the same spirit as RTCW.

It's a decent game people. Just another chapter in the Wolfenstein series. It's not gonna give you a BJ or anything. :p

Most of those complainers, are praising Valve for using their 4-5 year old engine (Source Engine), in their most recent games :p

The argument goes something like this:

It uses id Tech 4 (Doom 3 engine):
Complainer: "Booooo! That's old!!!"
But it scales nicely with even low-end machines:
Complainer: "But graphics suck!!"
You can always use the highest settings, resolution and AA levels:
Complainer: "Yeah, but the game will choke to death. That can only mean that it's poorly coded"
But isn't gameplay more important than graphics anyway ?:
Complainer: "Yes, but only in the games we choose it to be."

true enough, and to be fair i always prefered the look and feel of the doom 3 engine over HL2. Granted HL2 looks nice too. As far as graphics, i think for me once you get to doom 3 / ut2k4 levels i dont really care that much, sure crysis blows me away, but once at doom 3 levels, i dont bitch about the graphics and focus fully on the gameplay.

on a side note, i do love installing an older game again and just carelessly putting every setting to its highest, i just love that smooth feel when running super high AA and stuff :)

QFT. If Left 4 Dead was released by EA or someone else I would fully expect people to hate it. It's very odd that the PC community let Valve off the hook when it comes to graphics...Left 4 Dead looks awfully dated. I suspect it's not due to gameplay but the fact Valve remains PC-focused when everyone else except Blizzard has jumped ship.

This game is COD3 with mutant nazis..............and a little spit polish.

same look, same music, nearly the same start screen.....unfortunately a console port as well.

Not bad, but it would have been considered revolutionary 4 or 5 years ago.

When I first played the game I absolutely hated it. The lack of features that PC gamers crave and the overall console-ish feel was pretty frustrating at first. After I got over my annoyance I decided to give it another try, and to my amazement the game is actually quite fun if you just play the game and not think of it as a huge letdown or crappy port.

I have the settings maxed out at 1920x1200 4xAA 16xAF and it's running smooth as butter here. The game looks fantastic to be running on Id Tech 4. The inclusion of soft shadows, among other effects, has really upped the quality in the engine.

is that on screamin midget or the 4870x2?

just wondering if my GTX260 will do the same..

Valve know their community is still largely CS based and everyone running that ancient game has no reason to upgrade their hardware. Valve havn't done anything technologically impressive since HL2.

i'm a certified graphics whore (we have i.d. cards) and the graphics look good to me. like everyone else is saying, it's no crysis but it still looks damn good.

I thought their approach to integer-based HDR in Lost Coast was pretty impressive. Not technologically superior to any other method in terms of fidelity (which is a little worse than FP16/FP32), but the implementation itself was quite good, very fast and it ran on older cards with MSAA. Most other developers still haven't quite gotten exposure control quite right.

I've got my copy at Gamestop.:D

kinda annoyed that i cant buy this online for digital download off of steam, kinda weird too. oh well off to best buy :D

In a few months, the price will drop around $15 - $20 bucks. I'll enjoy it a lot more if I wait instead of dropping $45+ on it now.

Graphically the game looks great. The single player (45mins in..) I just got the medallion a little bit ago, so it's getting interesting more and more.

BUT the epic fail portion of this game is the multiplayer! It runs like crap.. choppy and sluggish in comparison to the single player (no its not net lag or anything). The green arrows pointing out teammates is distracting, now to revive people you dont get the cool needle like you did before, you just walk up and press a key.. eh. OH yeah, and the menu and commands/ingame prompts are all aimed at someone using a 360 controller! "Press Y (yellow button icon displayed) to revive... i dont use a controller, i have a nostromo, a g15 and a g5 mouse... not a controller... at least the single player will be fun.. i'm let down on the multiplayer... rtcw mp got me into clans and competitive gaming games for windows.... pfffff

That is unacceptable, they did that crap with the PC version of Gears Of war, WHY THE HELL DID THEY LEAVE THE GAME CONTROLLER BUTTONS IN A PC TITLE?

it runs butter smooth @1920x1080 max detail on my GTS 250

and i think i was to harsh on the first impression of the game, now that i have played a couple hours its not a bad game, it looks good, runs great, its just not a AAA title but it isn't a complete piece of shit either, its a good decent shooter.

but i haven't tried the MP yet.

because it's a games for windows approved game.

Although I do agree, if your not using a controller it it should detect which keyboard key it should be instead :D

the weirdest thing is when i sign in on multiplayer i get a notification saying "controller connected" then when i look at the options, rumble is enabled, auto aim is enabled.... its freaking weird. Should have had the previous group do the multiplayer this time around. it's a train wreck in my opinion. and why the multiplayer plays crappy compared to the singleplayer is beyond me.

Two questions,

1- Is the free $10 card available in Canada also?
2- What is the DRM situation on this?

Thanks

For GFW, you only need to show the controller button mappings in the manual. You don't have to show them in-game.

.4 Support the Xbox 360 Common Controller for Windows
Requirement
Games that support gamepad controllers must support the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows using the XInput API. If DirectInput peripherals are also supported, then DirectInput can also be used. However, XInput must be the default API if an Xbox 360 compatible device is used.

All references to common controller triggers and buttons must use the Xbox 360 names. See the Xbox 360 Common Controller for Windows Terminology list for details.

Controller vibration must be turned off when the game is in a paused or suspended state.

Mouse/keyboard control cannot be fully disabled at any time. At a minimum, an option to return to game menus must be available.

I was just responding though to his question "WHY THE HELL DID THEY LEAVE THE GAME CONTROLLER BUTTONS IN A PC TITLE?"

Yeah, but the point is that he didn't have an X360 controller plugged in, and the game doesn't need to display the X360 buttons when the controller is the KBM. The reason they were displayed is not because they are required to be for GFW certification but because the developers lazily left those displays in unnecessarily.

completely agreed which was my second point. I think if you don't have a controller in, it should map it to your actual keyboard mapping.

Good thing the PC version multi-player plays great; at least from my experience. I can't say anything for the 360 version though.

you must be the exception then...lmao unless things have gotten better since release day... i was disgusted with the multiplayer... the "objective mode" looked awesome... in theory.. but played like crap.. one of my previous posts details that... i feel kinda let down.. but maybe i should try it out another time to see if it was just .... release night bugs

They're lazy fucks, seriously how hard is it to replace this icon with another one. There's no excuse.

I hear this game is a lot like Call of Duty and not like Old Wolfenstein?

Is this true.

P.S. I want to hear from someone who played the originals. Not some young kid whose first nostalgia is Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare.

I apologize for being crude.

alot like call of duty in what way?

I've played every wolfenstein game spear of destiny wolfenstein 3d, rtcw and now wolfenstein. and played call of duty and call of duty 2.

i'm nostalgic my first gaming system was a commodore 64 at the age of 6 lol

Iron site and sound effects are like call of duty 2. Guns sound like a thud.

Health system is almost a carbon copy of COD. imho

I am positive about the game and liking it however, this is the one thing that I wish they had kept the same. They could have made it where you buy health packs from the black market dudes plus what you find laying around.........anything but the abortion that is the COD health system.

Also, if you want a challenge, play on the hardest setting. The first three are the same it seems like.
