This past weekend I helped a good friend who lives 200 miles away fix his computer. He could not get his new gear to POST.
We met up for the weekend at his relative's beach house.

He had a Phenom 2 550BE, Gigabyte UD3p, corsair 750tx, old Geforce 7800GT, 4gb Gskill ddr3 and a dangerden waterblock with custom watercooling. He was worried he had clamped down too hard on the chip.

Steps I took:
1. Swapped ram with my ram. No post
2. Swapped video card with gtx 260. no post.
3. loosened waterblock and.... the cpu fell out! wtf?!
4. inspect cpu and notice bent pins.
5. declare him a dumbass in front of his other friends.
6. bend pins back. inserted cpu correctly. system POST.

it took about 30 minutes. Then we enjoyed the weekend on the beach with our wives. This thread's for you, bud! :D

WOW!

Another thing to add to my list of questions to ask: Are the CPU pins bent? :D

Holy crap.......so he inserted the CPU in a wrong orientation...doesn't that mean just about every single pin will be bent?!

I don't think he inserted the cpu in the wrong direction. I think he just didn't get it seated all the way down. I don't know how somebody makes a mistake like that. I'm careful playing around with a $100 chip.

My mistake though, I took the waterblock off while the case was vertical, hence the cpu "fell", and I have no idea what orientation it was. I seriously doubt that the short distance the chip fell caused the pins to bend.

Gravity can be a real bitch. ;)
