Wiretap's Ice Cubic [ITX Project]

Painting and clear coating is finished!!! Now it just has to all dry/harden before I start putting it all together. Sooooo smoooth.

Nice paint job....it looks nice wit that slight orange peal. cant wait to see it all together.
 
lol. yeah, it's smooth. Up close it does look like it has a little bit of orange peel look, but there's really nothing I could do about it because it really isn't the type paint and clear coat you can sand with good results. But in person, the slight texture gives it a good look IMO. It catches more light and reflects it so you can see the slight metallic/pearl look.
 
I decided I can start putting this thing together now. The paint and clearcoat is hardened enough already. It's pretty quick drying paint meant for model cars & other projects.

Here's the power connector, I/O shield, and hard drive mounted. By the way, it's a 2.5'' laptop hard drive (160GB)... just to give you an idea of how big the case is.

Ok.. it's all put together, lol. I still have to install windows and software to get the LCD working. I'll get to work on that after I eat something. ^_^

It turned out pretty nice I think. It isn't *exactly* what I envisioned, but it's pretty darn good for my first home-built-from-scratch case.

Wow that's amazing. Id rather have this then a shuttle pc. What was the total cost?
 
thanks. Right now I'm taking it back apart and making a new paper cutout thing that goes behind the acrylic bezel. When the LCD lights up you can see through it because the paint is somewhat transparent. I will have pictures late tonight or tomorrow.

I have Vista Ultimate installed and updated. Next task is getting GameEx installed and configured with all my emulators/roms. Atari/Mame/NES/SNES/N64/Sega
 
any guides on how to wire that power button. im thinking of getting one. but the prices that performace pcs have for wired ones are kinda expensive.what kind of wiring did you use also waht size is it again?

I just used the standard motherboard header connector cables out of an old case and connected them to the power switch. There's +/- for the LED and the switch wires. They just screw down into the switch similar to how you screw down wires into an audio amplifier. It took only about 5 minutes from start to finish to get the switch wired up and heatshrink'd.

do you have the light on the switch set to be the hard drive activity light? i want one to be just on i donw know if you know where i would connect it to

Yeah, there's two different types of switches. Ones like that where you *should* solder, and there's the kind like I got with the screw downs. I prefer the screw down ones just because it makes everything much easier. But I just hooked my LED up to the power LED, not the HDD LED. I don't have a hard drive LED in this build because it doesn't really concern me.

good job. So do you have to unscrew the antennae everytime u want access to the mobo?

Yes. It's not really meant to be taken apart a lot, but it can be done pretty easily. The bottom has 4 screws underneath the case feet. You have to first take the feet off to get to them.. a socket must be used to take those off. :p It's sort of complicated the way I designed it to fit together.

Putting it back together is the hard part. All the wires have to be tucked in and the I/O shield has to align perfectly. It takes a few tries to get it right.
 
Here's the new pictures with the LCD working. I took it all apart and re-cut a light blocking shield to fit better so the paint doesn't let light through as much. It looks pretty good now, but not perfect.

Hey, how are the temps? Is there enough airflow for the case to let the 2 fans fight one another for air? What if you flipped the fan on the CPU?
 
Temps are fine so far. I haven't done much with it yet besides load the OS. It's a 45w processor, so it runs cool already. I haven't seen anything much above 45c. It's a really slim cpu heatsink, so it will run just a little warmer than you normally might expect.

Once again nice work, its always fun to watch your projects from start to end
 
that's a ridiculous little case. I'm kind of surprised that it all came out to be that much, quite honestly. Ah well, projects, right? What do they say...something like "twice as long, asn twice as much as you plan for"? Very beautiful little box there. No optical drive though. Purpose of this box? Simple playback box?
 
actually I remember you mentioning Mame and the Saitek controllers. Very nice sir. Very nice.
 
I cut the hole for the I/O panel exactly the right size so it pops in the same way as it would in a normal case. It is held in there pretty good.
