Wiretap's Ice Cubic [ITX Project]

I got the rest of the holes cut. Above the I/O shield, I cut a little hole where the power connector plugs in. You can also see where the 2.5'' hard drive mounts inside near it. The top hole is for the fan and radgrill, and the front holes are for the LCD and power button. Next, I am going to finish sanding, get the plexi-glass cut, and primer it to get ready for paint.

Neato!

It went from really small, to even smaller!
(not what she said)

Haha, awesome!

Finish soon please.

More pix will come later or tomorrow. I am in the process of filling all the holes/gaps with wood filler, then I'll do the final sanding job before I paint it.

I also got the acrylic cut with the help of my brother, and the LCD and power switch fit perfect. The machined stainless bolts I got look awesome holding it all together.

I got a little preview of the paint for you guys. ^_^

It's 1833M White Lightning lacquer paint.

I painted the backside of the acrylic face plate. The front side will be clear so when you look at it, it will look super smooth with a lot of gloss depth to it.

Update: wood filler phase complete

It's all sanded smooth and ready for primer.

Nice to see the replacement coming along well. Keep up the good work, and keep us posted!

Wiretap, is that 1833M White Lightning a white with metal flake in it?

Can you take a nice high res shot of that paint for me? If it is, I really need to know where you bought it from too!

Cheers :D

It does look like it's a little bit metallic very close up. I don't know what it is, but it doesn't say metal flake anywhere on the bottle. I have pictures of the bottle on the first page of this thread. You can find the paint at pretty much any hobby shop. It's for painting models and stuff. It works on wood, plastics, acrylic, etc.

Here's a higher resolution macro shot I just took that is color corrected to look accurate:

Thanks so much for the paint info... I think this is exactly what I need :)

And yes, the second revision is much better than the already awesome first one... Good job :D

ty =)

I got the first layer of primer on yesterday. It used a whole spray bottle, lol. The MDF really soaks up the primer. I still have to do some more sanding and get a final coat of primer on before painting. I will take some pictures later on.

It's all sanded smooth and ready for primer.

I couldn't help but notice the background of this picture :p

Anyways, I like the paint...does it scratch easy?

:D

The paint isn't meant to be super durable, but I'm putting a clear coat over it, so it should be ok once it hardens up after a week. From the feel of my test painting, it doesn't scratch too easily.

happy case is happy.

hi w1re...how are you.
ahaha, I just noticed that. :p :D I am very well, thanks tox. ;)

Here's some pictures of the second coat of primer. I'm letting it dry, then I'll sand it and see if it needs another thin coat. I believe it will. After that, it will be ready for paint and clearcoat! Oh, and all the seams have now disappeared. It's all smooth.

Picture updates!

Here's the final sanded coat of primer finished. It's as smooth as 4000 thread count egyptian bed sheets. So smooth it almost looks like molded plastic with no seams. ^_^

I also did the first coat of paint. At first I sprayed too close with my can (10 inches), and it made bubbles. =( That lacquer paint stuff I got sprays really frickin hard. I had to move back and spray about 15 inches away. It also might be because the primer didn't play well with it. But the bubbles only happened on one part where I sprayed too close. The rest of it turned out perfect and looks glossy smooth. I'll have to sand down the bubbled parts tomorrow with 600grit sandpaper or so, then respray it. By tomorrow, I should have my 2nd/3rd coat of paint done on it, and it will be ready for clear coat. woot! :D

Front panel pictures!!

The power switch lights up with the white ring LED, and the LCD from Crystalfontz lights up white as well.

I received the controllers I'm going to use for the emulators. They're Saitek P2900 wireless controllers. I got them uber cheap off woot . =D I've been testing the one I previously had ordered a little over a month ago, and it works great. They're going to be used for nintendo/snes/n64/sega/atari/etc.. The controllers are perfect when playing emulator games. All 4 of them can be used at the same time on the same computer thanks to the built in wireless operating on different frequencies with auto-scan.

Looks very nice! Are you concerned at all about how the buttons on the crystalfontz are barely flush? It seems like it would be hard or uncomfortable to push those buttons--the holes look like they'd be hard for the large-fingered to fit.

That's just how it mounts.. the LCD is flush to the back of the acrylic. It doesn't bother me at all.. my fingers press them fine.

The top portion of the case just has to be clear coated and I can start building this after the paint/clear is 100% dry.

The bottom panel is finished. It's all painted and clear coated. *yummy*

Wow... I can't believe that is MDF. It looks like molded plastic. Great Job, wiretap.

ty!

I'll have more pictures later today, hopefully. I should get the top clear coated and done tonight. After that, I'm going to let it dry and harden until later in the week/weekend.

W1retap, it's looking very, very nice. And that's uncommon for most DIY MDF cases I've seen. Glad to see someone putting more work into than just cutting and drywall screws... :D

OT, where are you and Ockie in Michigan? I'm in Flint and it sucks :(

(For those that don't know, Flint, MI. is known for the former home of General Motors, it's performing arts programs, it's unemployment, and it's obscenely high crime rate. And I left Santa Rosa, Ca for this.)

LMAO.... I forgot about that. When I first moved here, the apartments we lived in were across the hall and a down a couple doors from Bootleg (of the Dayton Family). His candy Ford Explorer was getting keyed at least once a month!

Bootleg, Ghetto E, Shoestring...ah man, I love that shit. Every DF cd that comes out is awesome.
