Guys, I have a friend who asked me to set up some wireless security for him. Any help is greatly appreciated. First some background...
He owns a automotive detailing shop in gainesville florida (www.downtowndetail.com) located in a parking garage. He is moving to TX and having several associated work in the Gainesville shop. He would like to install three webcams and be able to remotely (from TX) observe the shop. He wants one color pan/zoom camera like this one http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=30-115-113&depa=0 the other two can just be standard 802.11 color. He is ordering Bellsouth DSL and has my old 450MhzPIII (128MbPc133/Voodoo3 3000) in the shop. I assume he will need a router (i like the WRT54G). He wants to observe how many cars were done on a particular day and how long each took (estimate). I also mentioned the ability to have an infrared or ultrasonic sensor that will trigger the camera incase someone tries some shit at night.
Questions:
Will the cameras come with the required remote software?
Can one machine allow for three seperate streams of video (not all at once)?
Will that system be adequate?
How fast can the video be streamed (snapshot or like 15fps?)
Can it be recorded remotely as a slideshow
Is the sensor idea fesiable?

I don't have knowledge of those cams off the top of my head and would need to do some research. there is a good series of reviews here Is there a limit on price for this project?

The best system would be to have a camera that is FTPing a series of still images to a server. The camera could be logged into for real time video and the stills would be available, kind of as a stop motion recording of what is happening.

Is the plan to capture to a local drive in Gainesville then view those files from a remote source? If so the local system will probably need dual 160 or 200 gig drives in Raid 1. That way if you need to pull a drive, due to the content on the video you are covered.
 
There really is not budget, under 1K would be nice....I am wonder the same thing, will the video be streamed and recorded locally or sent via ftp, http to the HD in tX? I also heard he may need a faster machine? tru?
 
You don't want to saturate his pipe to Texas. Log the stuff locally with FTP and when he logs on from Texas he can connect to individual devices to stream the video. The raid 1 is to provide some safety in case a drive fails and he needs one of the images. Having the server in FL simply receiving the FTP files the 450 should be fine. Have each camera drop them into a different directory.

If doing streaming video and capturing it it will take up a lot of space. Adjusting the rate of still images should give you plenty of time with 160g of storage. You can just script the deleting of old image files after a week or so, or kill them off manually. Real time streaming you don't want to Texas. Getting snapshots should be fine.

This feels like when I wrote questions for the CompTIA Security+ exam.
 
Fresh Gear showed a camera the other day on G4TechTV that can stream wifi and then record whenever there is movement. Ill try to find it for you. Drusier, get on AIM. I added you to my buddy list the other day when I saw you were in Gainesville. I live in Keystone Heights, about 30 miles from Gville, 1/2 way to Jacksonville.

BTW, the cameras Im think of do come with software that gives them a psuedo IP, kinda like No-ip.org does.

I think they have some cameras over at www.X10.com that can do this. I'm not sure how much they cost or exactly what they do but I'm pretty sure you can watch them over the internet. Check it out.
