Windows xp and 8 workgroup

I have two desktops both running win xp , i have them on a work group,i got a laptop that has windows 8 im trying to join it to the work group,so far i have disabled homegroup listener in services.msc,played with the advanced settings.
i can see the laptop on the 2 desktops but cannot see either desktop on the laptop.
is there a setting im missing?

a - can you ping the ip of the machines from each other?
