That's part of your problem. It takes a computer less than 10 seconds to get infected if it is exposed on the internet. SP2 fixes this with security patches and a default firewall that is enabled until you install your own. I suggest you do as I said: download SP2 on your laptop, fresh install windows SP1 on your desktop with no network cable connected, upgrade to SP2, THEN connect to the internet.
