So who's gotten ahold of it? I'm installing it right now, but I'm anxious to hear from anyone who's already got it installed.

I have no idea. I get it through an MSDN subscription.

It's done installing now. Seems ok so far.

I'd like to get beta 2 myself. I haven't seen it on p2p yet, only old versions.

Can anyone confirm May 27th for public release?

I am liking beta 2 very much... though I cant get certain programs installed, mainly daemon-tools and alcohol 120%.. yes i know its beta and everything so I am not mad or anything.

Try Virtual CloneDrive. I just got it set up on mine and it looks like it's working fine. It kinda pisses me off that Vista still doesn't have native image mounting. The feature is trivial to implement, at least for ISO files.

sweet I will give it a try when I get home :)

also: anyone see dxdiag reports directx 10 ???? what the... im not mad about that.. its just EVE-Online says i need 9.0b or higher to run the game (initialize the gfx card) which is preventing me from playing..

i know i know, vista is in B-E-T-A and all... just hoping I can find a work around.

Yeah, Vista uses the DX 10 Beta. I don't play EVE, but the other games I have tried work fine. Some of them said they needed to upgrade DirectX when installing, so I let them do it. The version still reports itself as 10 though, so I'm not too sure what's up with that. As far as I know, the version of DX 10 in Vista right now is just 9.0c with Aero extensions in it. Try running your game in a different compatability mode and see if that helps.

cool cool... thanks for the suggestion. I will try it out and see. Also found this one too... so in case anyone who may have a similar problem with EVE or otherwise could try.

1) Add an entry to the registry at HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Shell Folders called "Fonts" with the entry "C:/Windows/Fonts"
2) Ignore the error at Eve's startup that says your DirectX is out of date.

CRAP. the x64 version I got won't install on an nforce 4 sata port. dammit! apparently you can trick it into using a 32bit version of the xp driver if you are installing the 32bit version of vista.

shit shit shit.

Yeah. The 32bit version has a legacy drive wrapper. The 64bit version doesn't have this (as far as I know) so it's a PITA to run, because the only drivers you can really use are the ones that come with it. Stick with the 32bit one. You'll be much happier.

Just installed it on a laptop and it seems to run a little snappier then the previous version. I thought I read also that this is going to be the widest avilable BETA ever. It will be available to the public soon for the cost of shipping or something like that..

From MS site

Windows Vista Beta 2 is now available for IT professionals and developers with MSDN and TechNet subscriptions. In the coming weeks, Microsoft will start the Windows Vista Customer Preview Program (CPP) for developers and IT professionals who are not members of the subscription services.

The Windows Vista CPP will also be available to technology enthusiasts that want to install and test a copy of Windows Vista Beta 2.

Anyone having trouble downloading it now? I've tried downloading it 3 times so far, and I was getting good speeds but they would be corrupt, now trying a 4th and getting 25 kb/s, I guess everyone is hammering these servers =(

I installed it at work. Threw on Firefox, Office 2007 Beta 2, and Visual Studio 2005. I'm gonna see if i can use it for everyday use. Best way to learn it, i figure. So far the only problems i've had is WMP11 froze when i tried to tell it to play all my music, and i got an error saying something about corrupt registry hive when i tried to install F@H as a service. But it recovered itself and is working great so far.

I should be getting my copy via technet soon.
I am using an Opteron 170 processor, should I install the 64bit version of Vista or is it safer to stick with the 32bit version?
Has anyone hear installed the 64bit or done any performance comparsions between the two versions?
Thanks.

Look at my sig... and I am using the x86 (32bit) version of Vista beta 2, better driver support right now... eventually though I will use the x64, but for now to get the basic understanding and working knowledge of the new OS the 32bit will do just fine. So i say go with that.

well, if they did a bunch of companies would go out of business. This way we get to choose between Alcohol, Deamon Tools and others.. would you rather not have a choice?

I'd rather have it done correctly and built into the OS. If MS did a shitty job of it, I'd rather have 3rd party stuff. Considering that so much software these days (legal and otherwise) is distributed in image format (even MSDN downloads are ISOs) ISO mounting software is a necessity. Both the Mac and Linux platforms have had it for years and it would be trivial to build into the OS.

Exactly how I feel. The ability to mount ISOs natively would be so nice to do without getting a third party product involved.

That being said, I'm sure this was a consideration somewhere in the development process. But, I bet it was shot down due to the speculation that it'd cultivate software piracy.

And possibly antitrust issues as well. Who knows, maybe MS has contacted those 3rd parties to at least get them up to speed on what they need to do to get their program working.

Something wierd with Vista B2. My onboard gigabit NIC (Gigabyte K8N-SLI) won't run at full speed. Boot to XP 1 Gb connection Vista B2 100 Mb connection. Other than that I have it running pretty smoothly. Office 2007 B2, Visual Studio 2005. Haven't tried any games yet.

Is anyone running beta2 with an Nforce3 MB or a Soundblaster Audigy 2 ?
I know nvidia released beta vista drivers but the readme only mentions nforce4 not nforce3 and I have not seen any creative vista beta drivers yet.
Oh yeah, is anyone running bittorrent client on vista, like azureus.
Thanks

The networking in Vista is still kind of wonky. In the last release I tried earlier this year, Vista refused to get an IP from DHCP, even though I knew everything was working properly and the right drivers were there. It's been fixed in this release, though.

Don't know about the nVidia drivers, but I know there's no public Creative drivers yet. I have uTorrent running on Vista just fine.

You may want to check again on those Vista Audigy 2 drivers. I dowloaded the Audigy drivers for Vista yesterday and just checked and there are Vista drivers for the Audigy 2 as well.

I installed Windows Vista Beta 2 the other night on my machine in the sig and the installation was painless. After the few initial setup steps I went to CVS and when I came back about 35-40 minutes later I had a running OS.

The sound drivers for the Audigy 4 Pro were kinda strange. The sound test never sent test tones to all speakers. No matter what settings I chose I only heard sound out of the front left and right speakers. There is no longer a setting that allows me to choose the sampling rate for the SPDIF output. I have this option when in XP or Win2003.

The ATI drivers installed without a problem as well. I didn't do much customizing since games didn't run on my computer.

About those games, Counter Strike Source would not run. It would launch and bounce back and forth between the background graphics for the title screen and my desktop. This was a new install of Steam and CS:S. When I tried to use CS:S from my Win2k3 installation it said that CS:S needed to be downloaded. I also tried turning off Windows Desktop Composition but that didn't help. Need for Speed Most Wanted failed with an error about it not being able to find the DX*.* files. I couldn't find anything on the net about gaming with Vista aside from a couple of short compatibility lists.

I still have some testing to do with the rest of my hardware. I never got around to testing the logitech drivers for my orbit webcam, dinovo keyboard, mx1000 mouse and wingman cordless. I also didn't try installing drivers for my HP 4670 scanner. I lost all interest when the games failed to launch. I didn't uninstall the OS yet. I'm going to play with it some more and hopefully I'll find solutions to my issues.

I got the same type of error for hitman: blood money... missing d3d9***.dll

all I did was fine that exact file on the internet, DLed it.. put it the windows/system folder and it worked.. even though its not even actually using that file.. it is just checking for its existance i believe... so maybe try that?

I'll give that a shot. Maybe that might help my CS situation. CS could be failing without displaying an error message?

Did they just come out? I checked a few days ago for a friend and they weren't there. At any rate, thanks for the tip!

Try setting the hl2.exe file to run in XP SP2 Compatability mode.

I tried the compatibility mode and it didn't help. I was able to install and run Condemned but it ran like shit. The hard drive was working like mad. It would play smooth, then pause, then chug, wash rinse repeat. It was crappy. No biggie.

Thanks.

I downloaded the wrong version of Vista (german), and I really don't want to have to go back and download (will msdn even let me or am I limited to one beta per account?). Does anyone know how to change the german gui to english so I can actually use my computer?

Anyone know of any way to enable SLI for Beta 2? I have a pair of 7900GTX's that are begging to be let loose.

Hmmm... I got Vista x64 to install and ran the ATI driver setup ok. But most of the nforce4 beta chipset documentation doesn't make sense.
http://download.nvidia.com/Windows/vista/beta2/vista64_...all_instructions.pdf

Tells me I should be able to find a device labeled "SM Bus" and "Coprocessor" in device manager. I am unable to find them and I've expanded everything in there. Same for something called the "Coprocessor". Also there is an unknown device that I can't resolve even by pointing it towards the nforce driver folder w/check subfolders box checked.

?

While the Creative beta drivers for the Audigy Series are old (they date back to build 5270), they do work (I'm using them with the ZS Gamer LE here with no issues except the default volume setting)

I have onboard Intel gigabit Ethernet (recognized as Intel PRO/1000CT in both XP and Vista). In the case of Windows Vista, the drivers are included, and work just fine. There are beta Creative Audigy series drivers available directly from Creative (they are old, but they do work, and I'm using them myself).
