Windows SMP client is now open beta.

This is pretty cool. I was able to install it, and I got project 2610. I haven't left it long enough to get any frames completed. I got a 2.5ghz xeon here, and for somereason HT got disable in the bios, so I'll let it go for a couple of hours with that and I'll post up the frame times, and then I'll turn on HT and get some more frame times for you all.

That is the loop I was stuck in when I was using a 'user' account instead of 'admin' account.

Ok. That will affect further purchasing. Really don't need dual PCI-E then.

Anyone have Q6600 or x6700 data?

in short, on a P4D it was a wash. Teh SMP client slowed down (from giving ticks to GPU) and the GPU did not run at full speed (not enough ticks) so at the end of the day it was basically a wash. The hit the SMP took was offset by the slow GPU to from a PPD view ended up being a wash. I think more science was being done, but at the time I had 1 gig in the box and was slow as shit.

No one ever coughed up an answer at FFC on best setup with SMP/GPU rigs. So not I have a GPU not being used... I think in the future the polling on GPU will be fixed (Houston eluded to this).

X6700 should be somewhere between 1 of Zims 5355s and my dual 5150s if you run stock, obviously if you overclock, you'll be higher. Check out the other thread with frame times and ppd per ghz. I'm waiting for the price drops on the Q6600s, when they drop to $266 per processor, it looks like it'll be time to pick up a few. Set the fsb to 1333 and call it a day.

Stolen from FFC:

Scaling on quad core just isn't there.

Project 2610

WinXP SP2
Intel QX6700 at 3.5GHz
4GB 800MHz 4-4-4-12 (please don't lecture me about the waste...I have xp-64 and vista-64 installed on other drives)

7:59 per step

Heading back to VMWare.

edit: dang that's a fast chip @ 3.5... 2747 PPD

A quad core and a Linux setup seems to be best then. Looks good to me. The Q6600 drops in April to $266 eh? Can't wait till then.

Huh?

The Q6600 is $850 now. Are you sure its not the E6600 thats going to drop to $266?

It's not until Q3 that we're going to see a price drop to 266. The April 22nd price drops will take it down to 530, atleast that's the rumors.

Edit: helps if I actually link the article about the quads.

Alright then I definitely have a problem.
I'm rebooting the machine now.
mpiexec.jpg

Edit: Reboot fixed it. I think there were some processes left hung from me terminating it a few times before. You can see another mpiexec.exe and another smpd.exe in the Task List

Is it normal for mpiexec to be taking up 20-40% CPU?

I noticed this issue when rebooting with it running in Service mode. One I changed the client to run under the account I specified in the setup, it went away.

Huh, I don't think I've read any reports on MPI eating ticks like that... odd...

i have a couple boxen that i can't put this on since they have no passwords on the user accounts and i run them headless so reboots would be a huge hassle. is this going to be fixed in a future update or am i just going to be running 2 normal fah instances until eternity?

You can get PowerToys and set the box to auto login with a password. Works just fine for headless operation.

Start - Run - "control userpasswords2" - Option in there (Uncheck "Users must enter......") to automatically login with password, don't need to install powertoys. :)

I'm almost scared to think of what your PPD will become if you get a service version of this running on all those hundreds of dual-core boxen you have at your disposal...

cant, i cant put beta software on these machines

and by the time they have a non-beta i doubt the bonus will be as large

HOLY CRAP!

This is what I get for working the graveyard shift on weekends. I had no idea until I cruised over here looking for information about setting up a VMWare/SMP type deal, but it looks like I don't have to do that now.

I just got the client installed, no work yet.

EDIT Didn't install it correctly, should have read the freakin' manual. Running the first WU now.

Just got it installed on my 2.8GHz Pentium D 920 (Presler) here at work. 2GB of RAM on the machine and I am giving it 1024MB to work with. Will report times later today in an edit.

Do you know if the Win Smp client is load variable like the regular clients are?
(5.04version)

Anyone else tried this on a laptop yet? It isn't disabling on batteries, so it drains if I don't shut it down.

What does load variable mean? Do you mean will it give up cycles? Of course, it runs at the lowest priority. :)

One of my best friends run it on a Core Duo laptop, but he really leaves it plugged in 24/7 so I can test the battery function.
Just close the program when you're on battery (but then you might not make the deadline, it's a fine line of balance)

Hibernation borked the previous versions of WIN SMP, not sure if that has been fixed yet.

I've got a dell PE6450 with 4x 700Mhz PIII 1MB cache cpus. Wondering what kind of PPD to expect from this Windows SMP client?

load it up but I'm 99% sure you won't make the final deadlines which means no points...

I've tried this client on three different systems and all I get is an error about no assignments and the client is going to be shutdown for a day..

Okay, so I shut down my PC while SMP was running, and now when I restarted it, its like stuck on 27% (where I stopped it) it's been over an hour and its not writing anything in the logs.

I still have 100% CPU usage, and 4 things of a1 is running, but nothing is being written in the logs. What gives?

I had a similar issue - I hit 80% and it stuck there for about a day, and since I was going out of town, I just shut the thing down and I'll sort it out when I get home.

CPU usage was 0% for me.

Guys,

Anyone know if the SMP console works with XP x64 edition. I'm assuming so, but haven't seen confirmation anywhere. I'm reconfiguring (and loading new O/S) on one of my X2s and wanted to make sure before I got to work.

Yup works fine, it'll install in the program files (x86) folder and you'll launch it from there.

Just got my first two results in.

T2300E (1.66 GHz) and Opty 165 @ 2.40 both get 33 minutes a frame on a P2610.

My daily average instantly doubled after these units returned, too :) Yay SMP!

This is a "why is this on the 4th page?" bump.... one time by me. :)
