I'm giving up the prize for the holiday season... Here's one of the pics I requested.

In order to get back to your desktop press the Windows Key and choose desktop. Or through remote desktop I've moved the mouse as far left as I can go and just click... that also brings back the desktop.

Dash must have read that the same way i did. pressing WindowsKey+pause, and the subsequent lines being your possible answers, as we both posted a screen of what pressing W+pause does. My apologies, however a simple clarification would have sufficed on your end.

There was rumor that Server 8 was going to go more CLI than GUI.

This proves that was absolutely not correct.

Here's hoping they retain the Core OS install option, cause that UI makes me wanna rape a clown
and I'm anxious to start on Server 8 for testing, but this...sigh.

I can see the question now:

When you click the fruity fucking clown smiley face in MS Bob Server 8 does the paperclip show you a barking dog for your RDP, or does it show 100% CPU usage from the paperclip.

One of my friends whom happens to be a systems engineer was informed that the next server OS would ship modular with the GUI-less core being the default install. One DVD for all versions. Depending on the license key is what you can add to that installation. This is very similar to what Microsoft did for Windows 7.

So even lies sometimes contains truths....

Except backwards, with both win7 and vista you picked the edition and could install then would ask for the key, if no key then trial...
 
I'm sure its going to be a great upgrade serverside.

But servers are not mobile cloud phone tablet boxes. Microsoft needs to realize that, and at least offer a version of the Win7 UI, which you can ALMOST do on Win 8 with the registry hack, but it breaks RDP right now, so we shall see if they fix that.

Same with 2008R2. Cant remember if 2008 did it. Been awhile since I've done an install of that.

In Win8 if you applied the reg hack it made startup of the computer extremely slow which negated one of the core features of 8 of its fast startup.

since servers take forever to reboot/start anyway, this might not be such a bad idea.
 
Just installed it on a VM at home and been playing with it remotely during downtime at work. Sure takes a while to get used to the interface... been a PITA trying to figure out how to add/remove roles and such. Just typing DCPROMO doesn't work. You have to add the AD role and then configure it via the server manager.

thats under server rolls :) that i found easy, its doing everything else i find a pita :(

try this, open ie lol then try to go back to what you were doing LOL alt+tab don't do shit, and if you don't have a windows key well, thats another adventure...
 
Not having a Windows key since I'm RDPing into my HyperV server is annoying. I so far have a domain setup and setup a trust with my other domains. That's working well. I found a bug, you can't make a Windows Server 8 forest or domain, it'll error on the install. You need to use 2008 R2 for both. You also can't later raise the functional levels to Server 8. 2008 R2 appears to be the highest they'll go ATM.

I'd rather not have that, Id seen what happens when an admin clicks the wrong button on a busy ecommerce server (located in a remote data centre) that doesn't have an ip-kvm:)(). You don't need an off button on a server, not one you can accidentally click anyway.

It works in 2008 R2... If you run DCPROMO in R2 it will install the role for you with the wizard. With 8, you need to install the role first and then configure it afterwards. Just typing in "DCPROMO" doesn't work anymore.

That is not the best practice way to promote a domain controller in 2008 R2. I was assuming you were doing the steps correctly.
 
Right from MS Press themselves, they tell you to use DCPROMO to install AD. It's even right here in the 70-640 book.

After researching I stand corrected. Using DCPROMO to circumvent installing the AD role prior to promotion is an acceptable method. I've never used dcpromo to install the role as I have always done it through the server manager, but to each his own.

I can't say I ever have used the roles method.. maybe they are leaning that way now it appears.
 
with server 2008 you can click shutdown / restart

on server 8 there is no start shut down..

start run ? where ? there is no start run.. there is start taskmanager, but that's about it.

I know the shutdown. exe -t 01 commands...
