I've set up a file server at my school running windows 2003. When its working it works great but several times a day it stops working correctly and some or all users find themselves unable to connect properly. Some users are still able to access the shared folder but are unable to open files while other users can't even access the shared folder. The server itself does not freeze and does not report any errors, which makes this all the more frustrating. A restart of the system corrects this problem but the correction is temporary. I know these problems are a little vague but if anyone has any idea what might be causing this I would be very appreciative.

What anti-virus you running on the server? Have you tried disabling it to see what happens?

I've tried disabling it and completely removing it but it didn't seem to help at all.

whats the event log read around the times the problems happen?
what errors do the users get when th eproblem happens?
Is the server set with a static IP or via DHCP?

Have you looked into any of the power management settings? It sounds like something is going to sleep...
